St Andrew s Cathedral Aberdeen Provost and Rector: The Very Rev d Dr Isaac Poobalan Choral Evensong for Pentecost A Celebration of the Church in the City of Aberdeen Sunday, 15 May 2016 at 6.30 pm Conductor and Organ Scholar: Kevin Cameron

Organ Voluntaries before the Service: Komm, Gott, Schöpfer, heiliger Geist (BVW 631), Johann Sebastian Bach Order of Service Please stand at the entrance of the Choir and Clergy. The choir sings the Introit: Come, Holy Ghost, our souls inspire Plainchant Welcome and Opening Sentence Please sit or kneel for the Confession: Minister: All: Minister: All: We confess We confess to God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, that we have sinned in thought, word, and deed, through our own grievous fault. Wherefore we pray God to have mercy upon us. Almighty God have mercy upon us, forgive us all our sins and deliver us from evil, confirm and strengthen us in all goodness, and bring us to life everlasting. Amen. May the Almighty and merciful Lord grant unto you pardon and remission of all your sins, time for true repentance, amendment of life, and the grace and comfort of the Holy Spirit. Amen. The choir sing the Preces and Responses (Music by Humphrey Clucas): Please stand. O Lord, open thou our lips; And our mouth shall shew forth thy praise. O God, make speed to save us; O Lord, make haste to help us. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son : and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be : world without end. Amen.

Praise ye the Lord; The Lord s name be praised. The choir sings Psalm 104 vv 1-23 (Chant by William Crotch): 1 Bless the Lord, O my soul : O Lord my God, thou art become exceeding glorious; thou art clothed with majesty and honour. 2 Who deckest thyself with light as with a garment : and spreadest out the heavens like a curtain. 3 Who layeth the beams of his chambers in the waters : and maketh the clouds his chariot, and walketh upon the wings of the wind: 4 He maketh his angels spirits : and his ministers a flaming fire. 5 He laid the foundations of the earth : that it never should move at any time. 6 Thou coveredst it with the deep as with a garment : the waters stand in the hills. 7 At thy rebuke they flee : at the voice of thy thunder they are afraid. 8 They go up as high as the hills, and down to the valleys beneath : even unto the place which thou hast appointed for them. 9 Thou hast set them their bounds which they shall not pass : neither turn again to cover the earth. 10 He sendeth the springs into the rivers : which run among the hills. 11 All beasts of the field drink thereof: and the wild asses quench their thirst. 12 Beside them shall the fowls of the air have their habitation : and sing among the branches. 13 He watereth the hills from above: the earth is filled with the fruit of thy works. 14 He bringeth forth grass for the cattle : and green herb for the service of men; 15 That he may bring food out of the earth, and wine that maketh glad the heart of man : and oil to make him a cheerful countenance, and bread to strengthen man's heart. 16 The trees of the Lord also are full of sap : even the cedars of Libanus which he hath planted; 17 Wherein the birds make their nests : and the fir-trees are a dwelling for the stork. 18 The high hills are a refuge for the wild goats : and so are the stony rocks for the conies.

19 He appointed the moon for seasons : the sun knoweth his going down. 20 Thou makest darkness that it may be night : wherein all the beasts of the forest do move. 21 The lions roaring after their prey : do seek their meat from God. 22 The sun ariseth, and they get them away together : and lay them down in their dens. 23 Man goeth forth to his work, and to his labour : until the evening. Please stand for the Gloria. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son : and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be : world without end. Amen. Old Testament Reading Habakkuk 3.3-end Habakkuk s prayer (p. 942) Please stand to sing the Office Hymn: Come down, O Love divine, Seek thou this soul of mine, And visit it with thine own ardour glowing; O Comforter, draw near, Within my heart appear, And kindle it, thy holy flame bestowing. O let it freely burn, Till earthly passions turn To dust and ashes in its heat consuming; And let thy glorious light Shine ever on my sight, And clothe me round, the while my path illuming. Let holy charity Mine outward vesture be, And lowliness become mine inner clothing; True lowliness of heart, Which takes the humbler part, And o'er its own shortcomings weeps with loathing.

And so the yearning strong, With which the soul will long, Shall far outpass the power of human telling; For none can guess its grace, Till Love create a place Wherein the Holy Spirit makes a dwelling. The choir sings the Magnificat (Music: Short Service, Orlando Gibbons) Please stand for the Gloria. New Testament Reading Acts 2.1-21 The Holy Spirit comes at Pentecost (p. 1093) The choir sings the Nunc dimittis (Music: Short Service, Orlando Gibbons) Please stand for the Gloria. The Apostle s Creed Minister: All: I believe I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth: And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, Born of the Virgin Mary, Suffered under Pontius Pilate, Was crucified, dead, and buried: He descended into hell; The third day he rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, And sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; The holy Catholic Church; The Communion of Saints;

The Forgiveness of sins; The Resurrection of the body, And the Life everlasting. Amen. The choir sings the Responses (Music by Humphrey Clucas): Please sit or kneel. The Lord be with you; And with thy spirit. Let us pray. Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us. Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, In earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive them that trespass against us; And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. Amen. O Lord, shew thy mercy upon us; And grant us thy salvation. O Lord, save the Queen; And mercifully hear us when we call upon thee. Endue thy ministers with righteousness; And make thy chosen people joyful. O Lord, save thy people; And bless thine inheritance. Give peace in our time, O Lord; Because there is none other that fighteth for us, but only thou, O God. O God, make clean our hearts within us; And take not thy Holy Spirit from us. Let us pray.

Collect for the Day God, who as at this time didst teach the hearts of the faithful people, by sending to them the light of thy Holy Spirit: Grant us by the same Spirit to have a right judgement in all things, and evermore to rejoice in his holy comfort; through the merits of Christ Jesus our Saviour, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the same Spririt, once God, world without end. Amen. The Second Collect at Evening Prayer O God, from whom all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works do proceed: Give unto thy servants that peace which the world cannot give; that both our hearts may be set to obey thy commandments, and also that by thee we being defended from the fear of our enemies may pass our time in rest and quietness; through the merits of Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen. The Third Collect, for Aid Against all Perils Lighten our darkness, we beseech thee, O Lord; and by thy great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night; for the love of thy only Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen. The choir sings the Anthem: sermon If ye love me, Thomas Tallis Please stand to sing the Hymn: O Thou who camest from above, The pure celestial fire to impart, Kindle a flame of sacred love On the mean altar of my heart. There let it for thy glory burn With inextinguishable blaze, And trembling to its source return In humble prayer, and fervent praise.

Please remain standing. The Blessing Jesus, confirm my heart's desire To work, and speak, and think for thee; Still let me guard the holy fire, And still stir up thy gift in me. Still let me prove thy perfect will, My acts of faith and love repeat, Till death thy endless mercies seal, And make my sacrifice complete. Please remain standing until the choir and clergy have left. Organ Voluntary God Moves in a Mysterious Way', No. 4 from Variations on Old Psalm-Tunes, George Dyson
