As the culmination of that peaceful march on Washington in protest over the segregation and inequality that Negro Americans were suffering in this land of the free five decades ago, King stood to speak. But the preacher struggled with a speech that had been drafted by too many hands late the previous night. Mahalia Jackson, the renown Black soloist, was standing somewhere behind him and sensed King s struggle. Tell em about the dream, Martin, she called out. And with that his reigned in spirit soared into speaking words of American scripture, words as essential to the nation s destiny in their way as those Continued on 7

I Will Do A New Thing THE OX The following anonymous testimony was received this last Monday. For two years I have been asking God to help me find a way to witness to my neighbors. Deliberate and persistent prayer for God to prepare the hearts and minds of my neighbors in whatever ways He might use me to help connect with them for Him in the future. My immediate nextdoor neighbor moved in about 18 months ago; we have talked occasionally about weather, his dog, former employment, and other getto-know-you discussions. None of my encounters with this neighbor have included topics of religion. Sabbath, August 24th, after church, I was getting out of the car at home with a heavy box. My neighbor and his wife were just coming around the corner of their house with a couch on a hand truck. I asked him if he needed a hand getting it into his basement. He said he had it covered. Just as I entered my house, I looked again and the couch was starting to tip off the hand truck as he went over the first step. I quickly set my box down and went over to help him. He was very apologetic but also very appreciative. Instead of using the hand truck, we just picked up the couch from each end and walked it down the stairs and through the sliding glass doors, setting it down in his family room. He then said, The flesh is weak but the body is... forgetting the actual quote. I said, I think it s The spirit is ready but the flesh is weak. We laughed and then he said, I guess this is a little bit like an ox falling into a ditch! Thank you for helping me to get my ox out of the ditch. I said, I m glad I was home at the right time to help out. I did not know he knew any Bible verses and even less, he would know about, recall, or apply the principle of helping someone in need on the Sabbath. Who knows what God has planned? I will just need to continue in my urgency and expectancy for God s leading and providence in response to my prayers. Anonymous are your prayers DUE? Deliberate Urgent Expectant If you have an answer to prayer or a testimony to tell of God s providence working in your life, please send it to hollings@andrews.edu with your contact information. It can be written anonymously, with pseudonyms, or with real names as you feel appropriate. 3

Operating Fund Pathfinders / Training for Youth Ministry The Center for Youth Evangelism (CYE) is offering Pathfinder leadership seminars to help youth leaders prepare to be invested in Master Guide (MG), Pathfinder Leadership Award (PLA), and Pathfinder Instructor Award (PIA) at the International Pathfinder Camporee which will be held in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, August 11-16, 2014. During the 2012-13 school year, over 25 youth completed Master Guide and 14 earned PLA as a result of these classes. Participants have attended from as far away as Washington, DC. Teenagers who will be 16 before Oshkosh are preparing for investiture, and encouraging their friends to rejoin Pathfinders. College students are also in attendance. Parents are completing requirements to support the spiritual nurture of their Adventurer or Pathfinder children. Many of those who have taken advantage of this program are seminary students. One such student is a PhD candidate who plans to take the information back to his home country in Africa and implement Teen Leadership Training, PLA, and PIA programs. Another student became a MG a week before returning to his home country of South Korea as a pastor. Kara Kang, a new Master Guide who is planning to work with Pathfinders this year, explains, This program not only prepares you for working with Pathfinders, but any other sort of youth ministry you involve yourself in. It s valuable knowledge that you will use for the rest of your life. This school year, CYE will offer all of the Master Guide and PLA seminars, as well as Adventurer leadership training and the Pathfinder Instructor Award (PIA) seminars. A Master Guide Club will meet at PMC. We encourage more leaders to come and participate and be a part of these trainings. See you there! Master Plan Of evangelism New Student Vespers / a new thing As the new-student orientation week drew to a close, Andrews University Student Association (AUSA) leaders worked with student chaplains and a worship team to host a special Friday vespers program. Before the service began, the leaders totaling about 25 had worship together, led by Kevin Wilson, AUSA religion vice president. He challenged them to think beyond programming excellence to a Holy Spirit-infused experience where people s lives can be changed. During the service they called on the freshman class to invite God to be the Creator of new beginnings, to shout out and proclaim His name, to be a spark of prayer on campus. It was the first fruits of God doing a new thing, says Bourget. Pastor Dwight felt led by the Spirit to make an unplanned appeal, and over 50 students joined him at the front of the church. After passing out decision cards, the leaders collected 48 completed cards, among which were six baptism requests, seven Bible study requests, one request to join the Adventist church, and dozens more wanting to recommit their lives. Hundreds more came to the platform to sign their name on the circle hanging above the pulpit, as a symbol of their commitment to exercise moral leadership on the Andrews campus. Following the service, one young lady leaving for a public university in just over a week came to Pastor Dwight in tears, recalls Bourget. She wants to be baptized before she leaves and plans are in place to make that happen. Two freshmen who plan to join an Andrews sports team said they want Bible study and prayer to be a big part of their team experience. They said when that core is strong, they envision the team going out across campus doing that same thing within their circles of influence, explains Bourget. Please continue to pray hard that God will pour out His Spirit in a mightier way than ever before. Christian Education AA / Introducing A New Religion Teacher Exciting news! Andrews Academy expanded its religion department this year and Andrea Jakobsons joins the faculty as a second Bible teacher. Andrea will be starting a new Bible class at the academy called Evangelism and Leadership. It will train youth to do ministry in various forms, mainly focusing on worship music and speaking engagements which will include but not be limited to: weeks of prayer for area elementary schools, doing retreats for public high-school students, as well as organizing an evangelistic series in the Niles area. Andrea, who was born in the Czech Republic while it was still communist, remembers hardships. She recalls standing in line for hours to buy fruit because it was so scarce and having to make up school work because she didn t attend school on Sabbath. In 1997 her entire family moved to the U.S. to finish her father s PhD at AU. They were supposed to stay for only two years but AU offered her dad a job. All of the 5 children were ecstatic about the possibility of staying in the U.S. and convinced their dad to take the job. After high school Andrea attended AU where she met her husband Michael who was working on his Master s in Education. They were married in 2007. Michael is now teacher and principal of Niles SDA School. Andrea graduated this summer from the Master s of Divinity program at the Seminary. She enjoyed school and says she wished everyone had opportunity to uncover the beauty of God through in-depth Bible study and the guidance of incredible professors. Now she s excited to teach Bible at AA and continue to study the Bible with the youth in her classes while getting to know them. The fourth Watch of Abraham Lincoln, before whose memorial King stood (Jon Meacham, TIME, August 26, 2013). Countless bloggers and talking heads have opined over whether or not in the past half century Martin Luther King Jr s dream in fact has come true. But I leave the celebration of racial advances and the decrial of racial division to them. Instead I wonder aloud if in the promise of God we have been claiming this summer I will do a new thing.... I will pour water on those who are thirsty and My Spirit on your descendants (Isaiah 43:19/44:3) there is embedded in fact a divine dream for a radical equality within the community of faith. Could it be that in our petitioning of heaven for this new thing, we are opening up our own hearts and schools and congregations to the Holy Spirit s tearing down the walls that have grown up among us? Racial walls, to be sure but gender walls, socioeconomic walls, theological walls, emotional walls as well? Could it be that God Himself dreams of a continued people on earth so united in and by His relentless love that they actually, physically portray the as We are one unity of the Trinity that Jesus prayed for (John 17:22)? This I know. Joel 2:28, 29 makes it abundantly clear that before the great day of the Lord, there will be such an outpouring of God s Spirit on all flesh that the walls of gender ( your sons and your daughters ) and age ( your old men and young men ) and class ( menservants and maidservants ) will crumble. God has prophesied the obliteration of inequality amongst His people before the return of Christ. So we must not abandon our prayers for God s new thing. But beyond praying, we must also work tirelessly with the Spirit of God for the fulfillment of His dream of equality in this nation, in this world, in this university and in this church. Praying without working to answer our own prayers ensures that the dream remains but a dream. It will only be fulfilled in the lives of those already working for it. 7

call to worship This is a new day of God s creation. Help us let go of old dreams that are fading and memories that haunt us. God has shown us a new way in Christ. We greet this way with anticipation as we welcome the dawn s new light. the word Isaiah 9:2-7 NIV The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned. For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this. music alive Join in the everlasting song... The author of All Hail the Power of Jesus Name, Englishman Edward Perronet, was of Swiss Huguenot lineage. He worked ardently for Methodism to the point of suffering physical abuse occasioned by his preaching. Preacher John Wesley wrote that Perronet was thrown down and rolled in mud and mire. In the American Revolution s shadow appeared the first stanza of the hymn. Hymn no. 229 uses four of its seven stanzas, those four stanzas headed with titles in this order: Angels, Sinners of Every Age, Sinners of Every Nation, Ourselves. So this hymn starts with angels and sweeps over time and the face of the earth, finally bringing the message home concerning ourselves. What will we do with the message of this Lord? 9

See the Signed Circle By the Piano-side Entrance? The signatures that cover it Belong to university freshmen Who have signed on the dotted line In consecration to Christ To be moral leaders For Him on this campus. You, too, may sign that circle In your heart To be the moral leader God is needing you to be This school year. Behold, I will do a new thing, Now it shall spring forth; Shall you not know it? I will even make a road in the wilderness And rivers in the desert. For I will pour water on him who is thirsty, And floods on the dry ground; I will pour My Spirit on your descendants, And My blessing on your offspring. Isaiah 43:19 / 44:3 NKJV
