Arabic is one of the richest and oldest living languages of the world, spoken by nearly three hundred million people in approximately thirty countries in West Asia and North Africa. Because of its religious and cultural significance, it has been widely used in the whole Islamic world during the past fourteen hundred years. The Qur an, ahadith (the Prophet s traditions) and a diverse and extremely rich body of religious writings in Arabic make the language particularly attractive to Muslims. On the other hand, the very elegance of Arabic literature that evolved during a long span of nearly fifteen hundred years makes it appealing to all those interested in comparative literature and history. Not only is Arabic one of the six major international languages used officially by the UNO, it is almost universally offered in most prestigious universities in the West as well as in universities in other parts of the world. Because of the historical and cultural connections of Pakistan with the Near East and its close geographical proximity with the Arab world, Arabic has and continues to influence the life, regional histories and cultures of Pakistan. It is therefore especially significant for our students.
