4th Sunday Of Easter May 7, 2017 From the Pastor The Fourth Sunday of Easter The Fourth Sunday of Easter is sometimes called Good Shepherd Sunday, because in all three years of the lectionary cycle the readings present us with that theme. Today our responsorial is Psalm 23, The Lord is my Shepherd. Our second reading, from the first Letter of Peter, reminds us that Christ is the shepherd and guardian of our souls. And our Gospel, from John, states that the sheep recognize the shepherd s voice and follow him. This not simply a sentimental story. Anyone who has ever stood near a flock of sheep recognizes immediately that they are unintelligent and relatively helpless animals. To predators they are the perfect prey. One of the functions of the shepherd, then, is to protect the flock from attack. This is the purpose of the sheepfold or the sheep pen, where they shelter at night. The shepherd also leads the sheep to pasture and to water. The stories of the Bible took place, not in the verdant Midwestern United States, where water is so plentiful, but in the semi-arid Middle East, where water is something scarce. Here at home we see green in every direction that we look; in the Holy Land we would see mostly brown with occasional patches of green. The shepherd s task is to find those patches. Moreover the shepherd s task is to find pools of standing water for the sheep, restful water, not the running water preferred by goats. A shepherd does these things because he cares for the sheep, and this is the meaning of the symbol. We are not as unintelligent as sheep, although sometimes we can get ourselves into surprisingly stupid problems. We are not as helpless as sheep, although we are subject to the slavery of sin. Just the same, we cannot save ourselves by our human power alone. This why we need a Savior. Again, Peter explains things for us. Christ is the Shepherd who cares for the sheep, who leads the sheep by setting the example so that we might follow in his footsteps. In this case, the example is one of patience through suffering. Christ did not answer insult with insult, suffering with threat. He accepted the cross, bearing our sins in his body there, and in doing this, he freed us from sin, he restored us to wholeness. By his wounds we have been healed. Finally, Christ identifies himself as the gate. He is not simply the shepherd, he is also the point of access. On the doors of the great Church of Sant Anselmo in Rome, this passage is inscribed in enormous letters: ego sum ostium, I am the gate. Christ is the means by which we access a new life, a whole new plane of existence, a life and holiness without limits, without end. Where he has gone, we follow, not only in his footsteps but above all by his power. In the Lord s own house shall we dwell, forever and ever.
