Worship Worship Today Excerpt from the Sermon Journal, Monday, February 12, 2018 Written by Pastor Tom Harrison The Throne One of my favorite book titles is The Last Days Are Here Again. Most every generation since Jesus has believed He would return during their lifetime. Unfortunately, the Book of Revelation scares many of us. I encourage you to read: Reversed Thunder by Eugene Peterson. This book opened my understanding that Revelation was written by a man, John, in exile (knocked out of the ministry) - he lost his church, community and purpose in life. When this discouraged believer had a revelation from God, it got him back on his feet and reminded him the Lamb and the Lion (not Rome or Babylon) win. Christians need not lose their nerve. Churches must be instructed and corrected. Worship needs to be core. Worship (Revelation 4-5) follows one of the most famous verses in the Bible: Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me. (Revelation 3:20) Worship centers, gathers, reveals, sings and affirms (Reversed Thunder, pg. 59). Main point: It s not WHAT is in heaven, but WHO is on the throne! As 4:1 shows, the door in heaven is still open! Let s read about and learn to worship God His way, just as Jesus taught us to pray: your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Something to Think About: On a 1-10 scale (10 being the highest), how much do you feel you know about the Bible? About Revelation? What s the deal with the throne? And what s up with the numbers 24 and 7? And who are the four with eyes everywhere even in the back of their heads? Welcome to the wild, weird, wacky world of Revelation. If you don t understand it don t worry about it. Digging Deeper into Worship, Part 1 In Reversed Thunder, Eugene Peterson writes, Christians worship with a conviction that they are in the presence of God. Worship is an act of attention to the living God who rules, speaks, reveals, creates and redeems, orders and blesses. Outsiders, observing these acts of worship, see nothing like that. They see a few people singing unpopular songs, someone reading from an old book and making remarks that may or may not interest the listeners. Is worship an actual meeting called to order at God s initiative? Or is it a charade in which people attempt to get God to pay attention to them and do something for them (1 Kings 18)? Jesus stands at the door and knocks. What happens when we open the door? Revelation 4 and 5 answers the question and gives the last word on worship

As a way of growing together in spiritual maturity, Pastor Tom is challenging us to memorize this verse this week: 2/19 James 1:19-20 Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, for man s anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires.
