The Greatest Commandment, Part 2 Loving God With All Your oul Matthew 22:34-40

Matthew 22:34-40, 34 But when the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered themselves together. 35 One of them, a lawyer, asked Him a question, testing Him, 36 Tea her, which is the great commandment in the La? 7 And He said to him, You shall

love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your i d. 38 This is the great and foremost commandment. 39 The se ond is like it, You shall lo e your neigh or as yourself. 0 On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets.

The Shema Deuteronomy 6:5, You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.

Soul (Hebrew): Nepesh. It is defined as: A soul, living being, life, soul, person, desire, passion, appetite, and emotion.

In the Old Testament the word soul is the Hebrew word Xpn (nepesh) and it really had to do with life when they talked about soul they tended to mean your whole life you just loved God with your whole life (your inner life primarily). So, to the Hebrews loving God with your soul was an inner thing

not an external religion and it was primarily a life kind of thing. Jews historically interpreted love God with all your Xpn as loving God to the point of sacrificing our lives for Him. - John Beverton

Genesis 2:7, Then the Lord God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.

The soul literally is the part of us that defines who we are. The essence of the biblical definition for soul means life, personality, the inner self and our identity. It s where we make our decisions and choices that ultimately decide our lifestyle and behavior. Think of the soul as the core you. - Greg Simas

It s connected to your heart, but it s much bigger than just affection. It s much bigger than feelings. It s about loving God so much that you give your life completely back to Him.

Along with our hearts, we are called to love Yahweh with all our soul. In the first five books of the Old Testament the soul refers to one s whole being as a living person, which includes one s heart but is so much more. Moses starts with a call to love God from within and then moves one step larger saying that everything about us as a person is to

declare Yahweh as Lord. So we are to love God with our passions, hungers, perceptions, and thoughts. But we are also to love him with how we talk, and what we do with our hands, and how we utilize our talents, and how we react to challenges our entire being is to display that we love God. - Jason DeRouchie

the soul is your whole inner life as a person your whole inner nature. To love God with all your soul is to love God with your entire inner life.god wants a kind of love that saturates us. God wants the kind of love that permeates every part of us and unites us into one great lover of God. - John Beverton

Psalm 42:1-2, As the deer pants for the water brooks, So my soul pants for You, O God. 2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God; When shall I come and appear before God?

Psalm 63:1, O God, You are my God; I shall seek You earnestly; My soul thirsts for You, my flesh yearns for You, In a dry and weary land where there is no water.

Psalm 63:6-8, When I remember You on my bed, I meditate on You in the night watches, 7 For You have been my help, And in the shadow of Your wings I sing for joy. 8 My soul clings to You; Your right hand upholds me.

All our souls will continue on in eternity. Daniel 12:2, Many of those who sleep in the dust of the ground will awake, these to everlasting life, but the others to disgrace and everlasting contempt.

Matthew 25:46, These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life. Matthew 16:26, For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?

To love God with all your soul is to love the ways of God Seeking to pattern your life after the one who created you in His image.

Psalm 27:11, Teach me Your way, O Lord, And lead me in a level path Because of my foes. Psalm 25:4, Make me know Your ways, O Lord; Teach me Your paths.

Psalm 86:11, Teach me Your way, O LORD; I will walk in Your truth; Unite my heart to fear Your name. Exodus 33:13, Now therefore, I pray You, if I have found favor in Your sight, let me know Your ways that I may know You, so that I may find favor in Your sight. Consider too, that this nation is Your people.

Deuteronomy 8:6, Therefore, you shall keep the commandments of the LORD your God, to walk in His ways and to fear Him. Deuteronomy 28:9, The Lord will establish you as a holy people to Himself, as He swore to you, if you keep the commandments of the Lord your God and walk in His ways.

1 Kings 2:3, Keep the charge of the Lord your God, to walk in His ways, to keep His statutes, His commandments, His ordinances, and His testimonies, according to what is written in the Law of Moses, that you may succeed in all that you do and wherever you turn

To walk in the ways of God is to strive to imitate God s moral attributes: A). God is Holy

1 Peter 1:14-16, As obedient children, do not be conformed to the former lusts which were yours in your ignorance, 15 but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior; 16 because it is written, You shall be holy, for I am holy. Hebrews 12:14, Pursue peace with all men, and the sanctification without which no one will see the Lord.

To walk in the ways of God is to strive to imitate God s moral attributes: A). God is Holy. B). God is Love.

1 John 4:16, We have come to know and have believed the love which God has for us. God is love, and the one who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. 1 John 4:8, The one who does not love does not know God, for God is love.

To walk in the ways of God is to strive to imitate God s moral attributes: A). God is Holy. B). God is Love. C). God is Faithful.

Lamentations 3:22-23, The Lord s lovingkindnesses indeed never cease, For His compassions never fail. 23 They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness.

Deuteronomy 7:9, Know therefore that the Lord your God, He is God, the faithful God, who keeps His covenant and His lovingkindness to a thousandth generation with those who love Him and keep His commandments;

2 Timothy 2:13, If we are faithless, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself. Hebrews 10:23, Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful.

To walk in the ways of God is to strive to imitate God s moral attributes: A). God is Holy. B). God is Love. D). God is Good E). God is Gracious C). God is Faithful. F). God is Mercifcul

To walk in the ways of God is to walk by the Spirit/live out the fruit of the Spirit.

Galatians 5:16-17, 22-25, But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh. 17 For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please.

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. 24 Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit.

While loving God with all your heart is about affection, loving God with all your soul is about devotion. It s about devoting yourself and committing your inner man, your life, the core of who you are to God.
