Making the best use of these units At the beginning of the class, make sure that students understand what they are doing and why. We are doing the exercise on page (12) to help you to remember key words / to help your writing skills / to help with grammar etc. You can create your personal teaching resource by printing these units in full and filing them by subject in a large ring binder. Fill in the blanks in these sentences. Use words from the Word Box below. The Jews refer to the founding fathers of as the patriarchs. The most important patriarchs were Abraham and Moses. According to Genesis 12:1-2, God called on to lead his people, first known as the Hebrews and later as the Jews, to leave Mesopotamia (modern Iraq) and settle in the Promised (modern Israel). God made a covenant (sacred agreement) with Abraham and his descendents. If they faithfully worshipped him and kept his laws, then he would guarantee their ownership of the Promised Land. It took the Jews another two hundred years before they finally defeated those who also laid claim to the Promised Land. They established the kingdom of Israel (meaning God strives ) with its capital Jerusalem, where they built a temple to house the Ark of the Covenant (a casket containing the stone tablets on which the Ten Commandments had been written). The Tenakh teaches that God is the all-knowing, all powerful creator of the universe who is completely good and loving. The Hebrew name for God is Yahweh, but out of respect this name is not spoken. Instead, God is usually referred to as Adonai, meaning Lord. 1.
