The Winstead Connection To Know God, and to Make Him Known April, 2018 Revival! God Loves You, Now What Are You Gonna Do about It? On Monday, April 30, and Tuesday, May 1, our speaker at the revival will be Rev. Marty Cauley, Director of Content and Coaching, in the Office of New Faith Communities of the NC Conference of the United Methodist Church. At twelve years old Marty told his family he would be a writer. Now, thirty-eight years later he is finally living the dream while facing death. Coming from a low-income home in Raleigh, North Carolina he learned the value of hard work, determination, and getting back up when life knocks you down. From his first job mopping the floor at the local Piggly Wiggly to serving struggling churches, he has always thrown himself into everything he has done. His passion for life and desire to invest in others have made him stand out in the communities he has served. Fueled by a love for gourmet coffee, North Carolina BBQ, and a desire to make the world a better place, this pastor of a United Methodist congregation has also traveled the southeastern US as the Director of Ministry with Young People for the Southeastern Jurisdiction, journeyed to Africa to work with orphans for whom he has raised tens of thousands of dollars to empower, and volunteered in his local community to build homes with Habitat and build community by working with a local low income school. A blogger, speaker, and motivator, he uses humor and storytelling to engage his audience and help them find hope during difficult times in their lives. Now Marty is facing the biggest challenge of his life. How to love deeply, live passionately, and listen to God while facing a recent diagnosis with terminal cancer. Dying to Go on Vacation: My first twenty-one days dying is a humorous and sometimes heartbreaking story of positively dealing with why bad things happen to good people. And we at Winstead are responding to this miracle, that Jesus Christ has overcome death and leads us toward life eternal! We will soon celebrate the miracle of Easter with our spring revival, April 29, 30, and May 1, proclaiming the challenge: God loves you! Now what are you gonna do about it!? More about this in a minute. First, I want to invite all who are interested in mission outreach to join us on Sunday afternoon, April 22nd, for the Capital District s Impact Mission Celebration at Johnston County Community College. Impact brings together representatives from every congregation in the district to connect and celebrate around our three missional streams: public school children and their families, our Hispanic/ Latino brothers and sisters, and our hungry and needy neighbors, locally and globally. Impact is an opportunity to meet, network and connect, share knowledge and information, and help assemble Welcome Home Kits for Project AGAPE Armenia. Our Bishop Hope Morgan Ward will lead us in a worship celebration. Our tent revival begins Sunday morning, April 29, with a light breakfast, and then worship at 11 a.m. at the new church site, 1851 Airport Road. Sunday s service will feature singing and hearing and responding to the Word. At 7 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday evening we will be blessed with a message from Rev. Marty Cauley. Rev. Cauley is a United Methodist pastor, and Director of Content and Coaching for the Office of New Faith Communities of the NC Conference of the United Methodist Church. He has worked with orphans in Africa, and raised tens of thousands of dollars to help empower them. He volunteers to help build homes, and community, through Habitat for Humanity. And he works closely with a local school in an economically challenged neighborhood. Rev. Cauley is a mission-minded, gifted storyteller and preacher, who will challenge us to live into our mission to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. (Continued from page 1) Before moving to Rocky Mount in summer 2009, he served as the Director for Ministries with Young People for the Southeastern Jurisdiction where he created, planned, and implemented spiritual formation events for thousands of middle and high school students from across the Southeast and beyond. Dr. Cauley holds the Doctor of Ministry, concentration in Church and Culture, from Columbia Theological Seminary; the Masters of Divinity from the Divinity School at Duke University; and the Bachelor of Science in Social Work from East Carolina University. 2 The Winstead Connection

Please be praying for our young people as they learn and study together. They will also be going to Lake Junaluska April 20 th, 21 st and 22 nd. This is a weekend at the United Methodist Southeastern Jurisdictional Camp where our youth will be with confirmation youth from across the southeastern United States. This is a once-in-a-lifetime journey for our young people, so we ask that you pray for them and their parents as they build together a foundation of learning what it means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ! Also remember that Confirmation Sunday is May 20 at the 11:00 am service. Please make a special effort to be there and encourage them as they share their faith in CHRIST! THANK YOU!! The wheels on the bus will go round and round! At the Church Council meeting on Tuesday, March 27, approval was given to purchase a 2006 Ford Econoline bus. This 15 passenger bus has a wheelchair lift and can carry two wheelchairs. After some small repairs and painting to include Winstead s name, it will be ready for service. Connect United Methodist Men By Fred Hight All of our recent events were successful: Shrove Tuesday, rose sale, and the Sweetheart Banquet. We were able to donate $500.00 to the Hope Station from one of our fundraisers. We will have a fishing outing and tournament on June 2 at Buckhorn Reservoir with fishing, games, food, and prizes. We are tentatively planning to have a fundraiser on April 28; cooking turkey tenderloin and serving it with green beans and potatoes, 500 plates only. United Methodist Women by Arlene Rech Go - Jesus summons us to go wherever He may lead, in all places and all circumstances. Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, Whom shall I send and who will go for us? And I said, Here am I, send me!. Isaiah 6: 8 On Tuesday, April 10, UMW will be making our famous chicken salad. Meet us in the church kitchen at 4:00 pm if you can help make the salad. Orders for the salad are due Sunday, April 8. Building Plans Update by Barry Parks Approved plans and specifications are in hand for the Family Life Center. The church has five year vested rights from the City for the Peanut Building, the Family Life Center, and the site plan design. All of the projects are now ready to proceed following additional approvals as required by the Book of Discipline. We received plans for the Peanut Building design from the Architect (Jay Hood) and reviewed the site plan with our Engineer (Ron Sutton) on Monday March 26. Several minor corrections will need to be made and both will be resubmitted to us on April 3 rd ready to bid. As previously directed by the church, it is our intention to put the peanut building and the site plan and utility development out for bids as two projects. We will send both projects to a select group of 4-6 bidders for each project. We will open the bids publically and read aloud the bids at 4:00 PM on Tuesday, May 1 at the offices of Herring - Sutton & Associates, 2201 Nash St. NW in Wilson. Where we go from here Once we have the bids in hand, the Building Committee representatives will meet with the Finance Committee and develop a plan for how to pay for the work (cash, borrow, etc.). If we borrow we will need a process and approval from the lending institution before we can take it to the District Board. With bids and financial plan completed we will schedule the Church Council Meeting with Finance Chair offering support for the plan. Next, we schedule a meeting with the District Committee on Church Location and Building with the following items in hand: Approval by City Council (approved site plan and vested rights for the project) A set of plans for the Peanut Building only A set of plans for the partial site plan All the bid documents from the contractors A recommendation from the Building Committee to accept the low bid meeting requirements The financial plan to pay for the building from the Finance Committee The approval by the Church Council to, hopefully, accept all the above Then we are ready for the District Committee to approve at the scheduled meeting. We can then give the contractors the notice to proceed with normal permits review of construction (Architect and Engineer and Building Committee). We will buy all the appliances ourselves (three fryers, refrigerator, stainless tables, (and possibly the stove if money is available)) to save 20% or more from rolling these items into the contract. The site is developed, the building built, and we pay the contractors and the architect and engineer. The Church blesses the facility and we move into the peanut building. 6 The Winstead Connection
Serve Hand in Hand By Sanda Hight Our Hand in Hand Ministry continues to serve Vick Elementary School as the spring semester progresses. Several of our church members volunteered to read to classes at Vick at this year's successful Read Across America Day on March 2. The reading celebration was coordinated by our own Mandy Jenkins, Media Specialist at Vick. Thanks to all who helped to make the celebration exciting for the students at Vick. The Hand in Hand Committee coordinated a potato bar for the Vick staff on March 16, an annual treat for the staff in celebration of St. Patrick's Day. We are all appreciative to Something Different for donating 60 baked potatoes for the event. It was a wonderful contribution from one of the most generous businesses in our area. Thank you, Something Different! Also, thanks to Don Taylor for coordinating the donation and for delivering them to Vick on March 16. We are also thankful to the faithful Hand in Hand Committee for getting the potato bar fixin's, drinks, serving supplies, and table decorations to Vick for the celebration. The Vick staff once again enjoyed and appreciated this special treat. We are continuing with our plans to celebrate Hand in Hand Sunday on April 22. We have asked the principal at Vick, Dr. Pamela Walthall, to make a few comments about our Hand in Hand partnership. We are also looking forward to some of the Vick students who attend the after-school program at Seeds of Hope to contribute to the service through music. Following the service will be a covered-dish lunch for our congregation and all our guests who worship with us on that day. We hope that our entire congregation will help us make this year's Hand in Hand Sunday a meaningful worship experience and a great celebration of our partnership with Vick Elementary School. The goal for Winstead is $1,000 to $1,500. There are donation cards in the pews. Make your check out to Winstead Church and designate it for Rise Against Hunger. We pray that Winstead will rise up to help eliminate hunger in our world. The food packaging event will be held on May 5 at Evansdale United Methodist Church. We hope that Winstead will respond as usual and faithful servants with volunteers to help in this very needed ministry. The time will be announced but probably will begin at 10:00 a.m. We are looking forward to Ashley Stillman s testimony during Worship Service on April 8 th regarding her mission trip to Belize. We are so proud of Ashley and the accomplishments she and her team have achieved in helping make the world a better place. The Outreach Committee is working with Pastor George to establish a faithful, helpful and responsible response to those in need of assistance who come to us as strangers at our door. We want to be able to respond as Jesus would have us to respond to the cry of the needy. The Outreach Committee will meet on April 24 th at 7:00 p.m. to continue planning.
