October 2018 The Messenger A Monthly Newsletter from Resurrection Lutheran Church Beloved in Christ, 2018 Stewardship Fall Emphasis THE GIFTS OF GOD FOR THE PEOPLE OF GOD Thank you for the spiritual gifts, time, talents, and generous offerings you bring to the life and witness of Resurrection Lutheran Church! As we prepare to gather at the table for Holy Communion, we hear an invitation spoken by the presider. It's not because the presider is the host of the meal, Jesus is the host. The invitation serves as a reminder of why and how we gather and changes seasonally to keep our ears and hearts alert. This fall, we'll hear the words, "The gifts of God for the people of God," to which we respond, "Thanks be to God." "What are the gifts of God?" we might wonder. The bread and wine and all that God has given and shown through Jesus are gifts of God. The lovely sanctuary in which generations before us and we worship is a gift of God. Daily work and daily bread are gifts of God. Creation in its many different forms is a gift of God. All that you have and all that you are are gifts of God, too. Yes, you read that correctly, you, beloved sibling in Christ, you are a gift of God! Stewardship is how we respond to God's gifts and how we care for the gifts of God. Every fall, our faithful Stewardship Team envisions what we might explore together as we prepare for today and tomorrow and the year to come. This year, we focus ourselves around the theme, "The gifts of God for the people of God." I invite you to participate with us during this season of reflection and action: to join us during the Sunday hour on October 7, 14, and 21 for exploration of what scripture teaches us on giving gifts and being gifts, to worship with us throughout October as we hear from members of our congregation speak about the gifts they've received and given, to complete your 2019 Contribution Card and return it during October or on Sunday, October 28 as we celebrate Reformation Sunday, and to join us for a celebratory potluck on Sunday, October 28th after the 10:45 a.m. worship service. I give thanks to God for the many gifts you are, have, and have received. I pray that our ministry at Resurrection and in our daily lives as the people of God may lead us and others to experience and to embody God's generosity and love in the world. In Christ, Pastor Kelly

NIGHT MINISTRY PREPARE AND SERVE Join us on Thursday, October 4th as we prepare and serve a meal with the night ministry! We will also need donated food items to prepare the meal. Sign-up here or check out the bulletin board in the hallway behind the pulpit. PET BLESSING & WORK DAY Join us on Saturday, October 6th at 10am for our annual Pet Blessing and treats to follow for all creatures. From 8:15-9:45 a.m. and 10:45 - noon, we will also be doing some fall cleaning and gardening. Sign-up here or the board in the hallway behind the pulpit. OCTOBER ADULT EDUCATION SERIES: STEWARD On October 7, 14, and 21, we gather in Fellowship Hall during the Sunday Hour (9:45 a.m. -10:40a.m.) to consider what it means to steward in the form of being a biblical giver. Pastor Kelly and members of the RLC Stewardship Team lead us and other RLC groups will provide refreshments. REFORMATION POTLUCK & RAFFLE It's been 501 years since Martin Luther posted his 95 Theses on the door of the church in Germany. We gather on October 28 at noon to celebrate the continued reformation of church and the gifts God has given us here at Resurrection. If you'd like to sponsor a raffle basket, they are available in the hallway behind the pulpit or contact Pastor Kelly and she'll make sure you get a basket to fill. MISSION ENDOWMENT FUND GRANT APPLICATIONS We've inherited a generous legacy here at RLC and continue to be able to give away earnings from the Mission Endowment Fund. Our 2019 Grant Application is now available and due back on Friday, November 2nd to the office. As stated in the application, please submit electronically.

These prayers are written or selected by members of our Stewardship Team for use in Sunday worship and for personal prayer in the month after they have been prayed in worship. September 2 O Lord, the source of all wisdom and purpose, and the blessing of those who labor; be with us in our work to guide and govern our world. Give to all people work that enhances human dignity and unites us to one another. Give us pride in our work, a fair return for our labor, and joy in knowing that our work finds its source in you. September 9 God of wisdom, you provide us with opportunities to learn from one another. Guide our Sunday teachers, Adult Education leaders, Confirmation volunteers, and all students as they begin a new year of faith formation here at Resurrection. God of might, you call us to serve our neighbors and to care for creation. Be with all who volunteer on God's Work, Our Hands Sunday. Give strength and joy, that the Spirit may be evident in all we do. September 16 God of glory, we are truly grateful for our music director, choir members and instrumentalists. May the talent you have bestowed on them be used to serve you. Bless this music so that it glorifies your name and reminds us that you are here and listening. May your presence be found in each note, and may the words that are sung reach the hearts of your people. Through your Spirit, guide these musicians through every measure so that they may be the instruments of joy and peace. September 23 Dear Lord, Bless the journey of this new school year at the Resurrection Preschool. Refresh the souls and renew the spirits of the teachers that they may create thoughtful learning opportunities and imaginative experiences. Help them to share their wonderful gifts of teaching. Guide the young children as they return to school, that they will have open hearts and minds that are eager to learn. Welcome those who are new to this community and continue to bestow your compassion, understanding and grace upon all of those involved with the preschool. We thank you for this unique blessing for families in the Lakeview community. September 30 Eternal God, Creator of the universe, there is no God but you. Great and wonderful are your works, wondrous are your ways. Thank you for the splendored variety of your creation. Thank you for the many ways we affirm your presence and purpose, and the freedom to do so. We stand in awe and gratitude for your persistent love for each and all of your children: Christian, Jew, Muslim, as well as those with other faiths. Grant to all and especially our leaders mutual respect in words and deeds, restraint in the exercise of power, and the will for peace with justice, for all.
