The Painting Little Talks to Little People One day in the 1400 s the Archbishop of Pisa, Italy was travelling and passed by the town of Castagno. There the Archbishop found a boy named Andrea who had fallen off a cliff. He felt sorry for the poor child and had him brought into his palace and given the best of care. In the Archbishop s palace Andrea had seen a picture of the Blessed Mother. The painting touched his heart so much that it always remained before his eyes and because of this he decided to become an artist. When Andrea was better he returned to his native valley and decided to paint the picture of Our Lady. He smoothed one side of a large marble block and on this he drew the outlines of his picture. Then he prepared dyes from vegetable juices and painted the picture of the Madonna without anyone knowing about it. One day, shortly after the painting was finished, the boy heard the rough voices of men coming nearer and nearer. To his surprise, from his hiding place, he soon saw four robbers dragging the Archbishop of Pisa! Yes, the very same man who had been so kind to him. The robbers were taking out their knives to kill the poor Archbishop, when Andrea, forgetting his own danger, cried out. The cry scared the robbers so they looked in the direction from where the cry had come. Then they got the shock of their lives, for there stood the life like painting of the Blessed Virgin Mary. All the robbers dropped their knives, fell on their knees, bowed their heads and struck their chests. They were sure that the Blessed Virgin was indeed appearing to them. In the meantime the archbishop had noticed the nods of Andrea the shepherd, and ran with him into the cave where he was hiding. After a while, the robbers lifted their eyes and arose from their knees. But seeing that the Archbishop had disappeared from them, they became even more frightened and ran in terror. Never again did the robbers dare to attack people. And what if better, from that day on the robbers lived a penitent life and became hard workers the rest of their lives. 2 The ImmaculaTe heart of mary Dear Crusaders, I am sure you heard about the apparitions of Our Lady at Fatima in Portugal. It happened in 1917, when the Mother of God appeared to three young shepherds, Lucia, Francisco and Jacinta. The devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary is the heart of the Fatima message. Our Lady stated very clearly that it is THE answer from heaven to the evils of our times. How it is to be practiced? For the individuals, it is with the devotion of the first Saturdays of the Month; while, for the world it is by the Consecration of Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. No doubt, the Crusaders of the Holy Eucharist should be the first ones to obey Our Lord and His Blessed Mother; by the practice of the devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary by means of the first Saturday devotions. But can Crusaders do something extra to help for the Consecration of Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary? Yes, indeed! This will be with the help of their prayers, sacrifices and communions for the Consecration of Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Now, there are some reasons why I would like you to make a special effort during this month of May. We were told that the Pope is going to visit Fatima on May 13. On that day, I would like all Crusaders to renew the act of consecration of the Eucharistic Crusade to the Immaculate of Mary that you will find in this bulletin. With the help of your prayers, and of the 12 million Rosary Crusade of Bishop Fellay, we will beg for a miracle on May 13, so that the Pope will do the Consecration of Russia exactly as requested by Our Lady at Fatima! Father Dominique Boulet * On April 25 th, I will have said Mass for the intentions of the Eucharistic Crusade in Canada. * Eucharistic Crusade in Canada: St. Pius X Priory, 905 Rang St. Mathieu E, Shawinigan, Quebec, G9N 6T5 Fax: (819) 537-6562 EucharisticCrusadeCDN@gmail.com News of Alphonse Ratisbonne s conversion spread all through Europe. Cardinal Patrizi had twenty-five meetings with Alphonse and after these meetings; Rome agreed that Alphonse had received a special miracle from the Blessed Virgin Mary. It was the Miraculous Medal, which had been the cause of Alphonse s conversion to the Roman Catholic Faith. After his conversion he helped his brother, Fr. Theodore in founding the Sisterhood of Our Lady of Sion in 1843. Alphonse was ordained a priest in 1847 and joined the Jesuits for ten years. He wanted to go to China, but since his superiors would not let him go, he left the Jesuits because he knew that his true vocation was to be an apostle. Fr. Alphonse then joined his brother, Fr. Theodore and in 1855 moved the Sisters of Our Lady of Sion to Jerusalem. In 1856, Fr. Alphonse built a large convent for these sisters with a school and an orphanage for girls. In 1860 he built the convent of St. John on the mountain at Ain Karim, together with a church and an orphanage for girls. Here Fr. Alphonse worked with a few companions the Fathers of Sion, for the conversion of Jews and Moslems until his death. Fr. Alphonse Ratisbonne died at Ain Karim near Jerusalem, on May 6, 1884. Hopefully, Fr. Alphonse Ratisbonne will be canonized as a saint one day. Pray for this and pray to Fr. Alphonse to help you to be good Catholics. Now one way to be a good Catholic would be to spread devotion to Our Lady. When you are at school you could ask your friends or teachers if they would like to have a blessed Miraculous Medal of Our Lady. Then you could pull one out of your pocket and tell them that they have to wear the meal around their neck and that they should say the prayer on the medal, every day. Tell them that they will get very great graces from Our Lady and that she will help them during their life and help them to go to Heaven. You could also give a medal to your neighbour, the mailman, your doctor, a nurse, or somebody else. Truly, Our Lady will bless you for doing this. The End 11

( Continued from page 4) During the night of January 19 th, Alphonse had a vision of a cross. The next day, the thought of this vision bothered him and he tried to forget about it by visiting friends and saying goodbye to them. While going on these visits he met Baron Bussières who was just going to the church of St. Andrea delle Fratte to make some final funeral arrangements for Comte, a friend who had recently died. When the Baron told Alphonse that Comte had promised to pray for him, Alphonse agreed to go to the church with the Baron. While Baron Bussières went to the sacristy to finish up his friend s funeral arrangements, Alphonse looked around the church. Suddenly a big black dog appeared from out of nowhere and tried to stop him from looking at the church. The dog suddenly disappeared and Alphonse noticed a great light coming from the chapel of the Guardian Angels. Arriving at the chapel, Alphonse Ratisbonne saw that in the light was the most Blessed Virgin Mary. Our Lady had appeared exactly the same way that she was pictured on the Miraculous Medal. He looked at the beautiful eyes of Our Lady for a moment. But since her face was so bright he lowered his eyes to the level of her hands. From her hands Alphonse saw the beautiful rays of grace pouring out and Our Lady made many holy secrets known to his heart. Our Lady did not speak any words to Alphonse but she made him understand everything that God wanted him to know. Alphonse had fallen to his knees and was converted to the Catholic Faith on the spot. Baron Bussières found Alphonse kneeling at the altar and raised him up. When Alphonse arrived at his hotel, he sent for a priest and told him all that had just taken place. And to top it all off, he ask to be baptized immediately. Alphonse stayed and prayed all night beside the body of Comte in the church of St. Andrea. The next day after the funeral Alphonse went on a ten-day retreat with some Jesuit priests and received Catechism instructions about the Faith. Many important people came to see Alphonse received into the Catholic Church. Cardinal Patrizi baptized, confirmed and gave Alphonse his First Holy Communion. 10 The MIRACULOUS MEDAL and RATISBONNE Many of you probably know who Our Lady of Grace is. Her picture is the one where she wears a white dress with a blue ribbon about her waist, and a blue mantle and a white veil. She stands with her hands down by her sides. Mary is pictured like this on the Miraculous Medal but there are rays coming from her hands because these rays are graces that we can have, if only we will ask for them! But how did the Miraculous Medal come about, you might ask? St. Catherine Labouré was a novice at the Motherhouse of the Sisters of Charity, in Paris, France. Our Lady first appeared to Catherine on the night of July 18, 1830. At this time in the chapel, while Our Lady sat on a chair Catherine knelt by Our Lady s side and put her hands on Our Lady s lap. Then Our Lady spoke with Catherine for almost two hours and told her: Come to the foot of the altar. There graces will be shed upon all, great and little, who ask for them. Graces will be especially shed upon those who ask for them. On November 27, 1830 Our Lady again appeared to St. Catherine while she was at prayer in the chapel with the rest of the novices. Our Lady appeared holding a ball. On her fingers she had many rings set with precious gems, which cast bright rays of light reaching to her feet. Our Lady said: The ball which you see represents the whole world, especially France, and each person in particular. The rays represent the graces I shed upon those who ask for them. The gems from which rays do not fall are the graces for which souls forget to ask. Right after this Mary appeared to Catherine like the picture of Our Lady of Grace, with an oval frame around herself. And rays of light streamed from the jewelled rings on her fingers to the globe under her feet. The words: O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee, were in letters of gold. Then Mary spoke: Have a medal made after this model. All who wear it will receive great graces. They should wear the medal around the neck. Great graces will be given to persons who wear the medal with confidence. 3

The oval then turned around and Catherine saw the back of the medal. It showed a large M with a bar and a cross on top of it. Beneath the M were the Holy Hearts of Jesus and Mary. Jesus Heart was crowned with thorns and Mary s Heart had a sword in it. Twelve stars went around the medal. This is how the medal was made and even to this day people gain great graces from wearing a blessed Miraculous Medal. One famous person who obtained many beautiful graces from Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal is Alphonse Ratisbonne. Alphonse was a banker who hated the Catholic Faith especially because his older brother Theodore had become a Catholic priest. In 1841, Alphonse became engaged to a high class Jewish girl. But since the marriage was not to take place immediately, he left Strasbourg on November 17 th, and decided to go to Malta. He arrived in Naples, Italy in December and visited many friends in the Jewish circles. The ship for Malta kept delaying its departure from day to day so Alphonse decided to go to Malta by way of Palermo, Italy. He went to the Rome ticket office by mistake and there and then decided to go to Rome even though before leaving Strasbourg he had said that he would never pass through Rome. But in a fit of anger he booked a passage to Rome by way of coach, with the hope of returning to Naples on January 20, 1842. Alphonse arrived in Rome on January 6, 1842 and booked into a hotel. By chance he met an old friend Gustave Bussières. Later he met Gustave s brother, Baron Bussières, who would become the instrument in changing Alphonse s life. Alphonse toured Rome just like any other tourist seeing: St. Peter s Basilica, the Coliseum and many other sites. Seeing the Eternal City filled Alphonse with an even deeper hatred for the Catholic Church and he booked his trip to Naples for January 17 th. Alphonse was a polite man who liked to return the kindness shown to him by his friends by going to their houses. While visiting Baron Bussières, the Baron learned that Alphonse would soon leave for Naples. The Baron, who was also a convert to the Catholic Church, did all he could to persuade Alphonse to become a Catholic. They argued much and at the height of the argument, the Baron showed Alphonse Ratisbonne a Miraculous Medal. Alphonse thought that it was superstition to wear a medal but he still agreed to wear the medal and to pray the Memorare. He let the Baron s little daughter place the medal on a ribbon around his neck and wrote out the Memorare in his own handwriting. But as soon as he had written out the prayer, the words of the prayer continued to sound in his mind. Renewal of the Consecration of the Children's Eucharistic Crusade to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. INTENTION FOR THE MONTH OF May 2010 This consecration is to be renewed on May 13th, the anniversary of the first apparition of Our Lady at Fatima. In these terrible times in the life of our Holy Mother the Church, O Our Lady, we raise our eyes to thee. At Fatima in 1917 thou had come to preach the greatest Crusade ever undertaken against the relentless forces of the Devil hurling souls into Hell. For this purpose thou addressed yourself to three children asking that everyone pray, receive Communion, sacrifice himself, and be an apostle for the victory of the Holy Catholic Church over the forces of evil. Wishing to answer thy call, we have restarted the Eucharistic Crusade, convinced that children, by their prayers and sacrifices, will be able to draw down upon our poor world the mercies of Heaven, and to draw after them a multitude of grown up into the battle to re-establish the rights of Our Lord Jesus Christ. We wish therefore today solemnly to place under thy motherly protection the Children's Eucharistic Crusade which we consecrate wholly to thy Immaculate Heart. Deign to accept then, O Our Lady of Fatima, to be its Queen and Guardian. Show us that this Consecration has been acceptable to thee by pouring down upon the Eucharistic Crusade and upon all who uphold, support and defend it the fullness of divine blessings so that its spread and growth in holiness may be before the world as a living witness of the power of thy Immaculate Heart. In Heaven finally assembled by thy cares around the throne of Jesus our Saviour, the only True God, may all the Crusaders and the souls saved because of them sing with one voice for eternity: Long live Christ the King! 8 May 13, 1987 Fr. F. SCHMIDBERGER Superior General of Society St Pius X Fr. D. PUGA General Chaplain of the Crusade Our Lady of Fatima Daily offering (To be recited every morning when you wake up) O Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I offer Thee all my prayers, works, joys and sufferings of this day, for all the intentions of Thy Sacred Heart in union with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass throughout the world, and in reparation for my sins.
