3rd Sunday of Lent March 19, 2017 Water bookends our readings today for the Third Sunday of Lent and water bookends our lives of faith. A canticle from the Old Testament Prophet Isaiah sings that, we shall draw water joyfully from the wellsprings of salvation (Isaiah 12:31). The Israelites in today s First Reading grumble in their thirst and Moses cried out to God in exasperation and God gives them water from the rock. It was an extraordinary event that makes known to the people that God is in their midst and hears their cries. In today s Gospel from St. John, Jesus gives a Samaritan woman MORE than water which she came to draw from Jacob s well. Jesus gives her dialogue and presence both of which make known to her the presence of God in her midst. He speaks to her first and asks for water. Now remember, in ancient Israel men never spoke to women in public AND Jewish men would never consider a conversation with a Samaritan, women or man. So the story is extraordinary from that aspect as well as in the dialogue that ensued and the coming to belief in Jesus of the Samaritan woman. Jesus satisfied her deeper longing and her deepest thirst for God and acceptance. Transformed, she returned to the people she tried to avoid and shared her experience. She led the people she tried to avoid to Jesus and their encounter with him transformed them! They came to know the Savior was in their midst! When we were baptized the Holy Spirit was given to us and we became one with Jesus Christ. By his gift of self on the cross, Jesus gave us living water and offered us the wellsprings of salvation. God quenches our thirst when we are willing to be vulnerable, like the women, and empty ourselves of whatever keeps us from believing that God s love can transform us. [Living the Word 2017 World Library] In our Lenten Retreat, REMEMBER, P, F, G and you will find strength and trust to repent and believe the Gospel! Yes, the word is OUT that we will be HAVING our FIRST FISH Fry and Baked FISH DINNER on Friday, March 24 th beginning at 4:30pm. Our wonderful TEAM, led by our own Fr. Max, will be in the back of the House on Friday preparing a Lenten Meal for EVERYONE. Join us and help make the FIRST EVER the BEST EVER Fish Fry and Baked Fish Dinner! I ll be in the front of the House helping to make it a pleasant evening for YOU. And yes, TAKE-OUT will be available. 4:30pm Friday March 24 th in the Fr. Garrity Center! THANK YOU: for your continued generosity and faithfulness in support of the Church! Be a Blessing and Share your Blessings! Fr. John

In today s Gospel, Jesus was able to change the life of the woman at the well because he was willing to break down the barriers of hatred and misunderstanding. Whenever we break the barriers of misunderstanding and mend tattered relationships in our own families, we too discover the gift of God. The Day of the Unborn Child is part of the Knights commitment to build a culture that respects and protects every human life from natural conception to natural death. The March 25th Holy Hour will begin at 9:00am with a Eucharistic procession from the church to the Resurrection Chapel. The closing procession at 10:00am will include a stop at the outdoor memorial to the unborn if the weather permits. Please join us to prayerfully celebrate the gift of life.

Because it lands on a Sunday, we celebrate on the Monday after, March 20 th. Not much is known about the Blessed Virgin s husband, as not much is documented about him in the Bible! We know that he attributed as the patron saint of fathers, carpenters, and those who desire a holy death. He is described as a just man, and he followed in the ways of Abraham as a faithful man. Pope Francis has a special interest in St. Joseph. His childhood parish in Buenos Aires is dedicated to San José, and a er his inauguration, he had a statue of St. Joseph brought over from Argentina. This statue has St. Joseph lying down and asleep, to reference when he had his dream with the angels. Pope Francis is known to leave little scraps of paper with prayer requests under this statue. He says, He s a carpenter and he gets the job done, even though he sometimes makes you wait. How true it is that when we ask for something, sometimes we don t get answers in a timely fashion! Faith will get us through this waiting season. Choir Rehearsal Schedules: Traditional Choir and Contemporary ensemble meets to rehearse on Tuesday evenings at 7.30pm. Youth Choir also rehearses on Tuesdays at 6.pm. If you are interested in participating in any of these choirs, cantoring, or playing an instrument during mass, please call or see me after mass up in the loft. Call the music ministry office for more information: 440.243.3877 ext 27. Fifth Station: Simon Helps Jesus Carry the Cross Stations of the Cross Sixth Station: Veronica Wipes the Face of Jesus The king whom we follow and who accompanies us is a king who loves even to the cross and who teaches us to serve and to love. And you are not ashamed of his cross and embrace it, because you have understood that it is in giving ourselves, in emerging from ourselves that we have true joy and that, with his love, God conquered evil. You carry the pilgrim cross through all the world to tell everyone that on the cross Jesus knocked down the wall of enmity that divides people and nations and brought reconciliation and peace. How am I like Simon, although weary, yet was good enough to help the Lord carry his cross? Let us open our ears to hear God s work and to recognize his voice and call to follow in his footsteps, to go forth from our own land and to receive his promise. May we be touched by his love, that we may touch him in faith. Let us entrust ourselves fully to him and believe in his love, especially at times of trial, beneath the shadow of the cross, when our faith is called to mature. Let us remind ourselves that those who believe are never alone. May we see all things with the eyes of Jesus, that he may be light for our path. How am I like Veronica who reaches out to others to lessen their suffering? Excerpted from: Stations of the Cross in the Words of Pope Francis (2015 All Saints Press)
