Outline Summary of Chapters 22 27 Chapter 22: (pp. 284-290) - The night of the trial, Jem cries because he is so upset at the injustice of the verdict - The next day, Maycomb s African American population brings over tons of food to the Finch household to thank Atticus - Jem realizes that (white) people in Maycomb aren t as great as he thought (losing innocence) o Miss Maudie points out that there were people who tried to help: Judge Taylor appointed o Atticus to the case instead of a regular public defender Miss Maudie points out that the jury staying out so long: they were deliberating 3.5 hours (WAY longer than usually expected for a black and white case) a. This shows PROGRESS " a step in the right direction (pp. 284-290) & bottom of 293-296 (fear) - As the kids leave Miss Maudie s house, Miss Stephanie runs over to tell them that Bob Ewell jumped their father this morning, spat on him, and swore revenge Chapter 23: (pp. 291-304) - Bob Ewell s threats worry everybody but Atticus o Atticus explains to Jem and Scout that he made Mr. Ewell look like a fool, so now Mr. Ewell feels like he needs to even the score and get revenge o Tom Robinson is sent to another prison 70 miles away while his appeal winds through the court system # Atticus thinks that Tom Robinson has a good chance of winning the appeal # If Tom loses, he will go to the electric chair (rape was a capital offense in Alabama) o How could all twelve men have found Tom guilty? # In Alabama court of law, a white man s words always beat a black man s # They were lucky to have the jury out so long i. In fact, one man on the jury wanted to acquit Tom (find him innocent) Who? " one of the Cunninghams The one fellow who took considerable wearing down (pp. 297-298) A cousin of the guy at the jail; Cunningham s are very loyal. Once you gain their trust, they will always be loyal to you o Jem and Scout discuss the class system of society # Jem suggests that Boo Radley does not come out of his house because he doesn t want to leave it Chapter 24: (pp. 305-318) - Aunt Alexandra and her missionary circle have tea - They have a ridiculously ironic and hypocritical conversation about the poor Mrunas in Africa that need to be converted to Christianity; meanwhile they complain about their black servants, who they say have behaved badly ever since Tom Robinson s trial (how ridiculous of them to be upset). - Suddenly, Atticus calls Aunt Alexandra to the kitchen. o Tom Robinson attempted escape and was shot 17 times (pp. 314-315 & bottom of 316) o He takes Calpurnia with him to tell Tom s family of his death - Miss Maudie explains that the town trusts Atticus to do the right thing, even if it hurts him Chapter 25: (pp. 319-323) - Mr. Underwood writes a long article condemning Tom s death as the murder of an innocent man - Bob Ewell is overheard saying that Tom s death makes one down and about two more to go. - Summer ends and Dill leaves Chapter 26: (pp. 324-331) - School starts back up and Jem and Scout begin to pass by the Radley place every day - They are now too old to be frightened by the house, but Scout wishes that she could see Boo Radley just once - Miss Gates lectures the class on the wickedness of Hitler s persecution of the Jews and on the virtues of equalities and democracy (pp. 327-331)

- Scout listens and later asks Jem how Miss Gates can preach about equality when she came out of the courthouse after the trial and told Miss Stephanie Crawford that it was about time that somewhat taught the blacks in town a lesson - Jem gets mad and tells Scout never to mention the trial to him again Chapter 27: (pp. 332-340) - By the middle of October, Bob Ewell gets a job with the WPA, one of the Depression job programs, and loses it a few days later - During the same time, Judge Taylor is home alone and hears someone prowling around; when he goes to investigate, he finds the screen door open and sees a shadow creeping away - Bob Ewell then begins to follow Helen Robinson to work, keeping his distance but whispering obscenities at her (pp. 332-335) o Mr. Link Deas sees Ewell and threatens to have him arrested if he doesn t leave Helen alone; Ewell gives her no further trouble - For Halloween, the town sponsors a party and a play at the school (pp. 338-340) - The play is an agricultural pageant where every child portrays food: Scout wears a wire mesh shaped to look like a ham. (pp.341-348) *page 340 Foreshadowing
