Sunday, September 25, 2016 Lesson Text: Isaiah 61:1-4, 8-11 King James Version (KJV) I. THE MISSION OF THE MESSIAH (Isaiah 61:1-4) 1. The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; 2. To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn; 3. To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified. 4. And they shall build the old wastes, they shall raise up the former desolations, and they shall repair the waste cities, the desolations of many generations.

II. THE KINGDOM BLESSING (Isaiah 61:8-11) 8. For I the Lord love judgment, I hate robbery for burnt offering; and I will direct their work in truth, and I will make an everlasting covenant with them. 9. And their seed shall be known among the Gentiles, and their offspring among the people: all that see them shall acknowledge them, that they are the seed which the Lord hath blessed. 10. I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels. 11. For as the earth bringeth forth her bud, and as the garden causeth the things that are sown in it to spring forth; so the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise to spring forth before all the nations.

New International Version (NIV) I. THE MISSION OF THE MESSIAH (Isaiah 61:1-4) 1. The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me,because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor.he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, 2. to proclaim the year of the Lord s favor and the day of vengeance of our God,to comfort all who mourn, 3. and provide for those who grieve in Zion to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the Lord for the display of his splendor. 4. They will rebuild the ancient ruins and restore the places long devastated; they will renew the ruined cities that have been devastated for generations. II. THE KINGDOM BLESSING (Isaiah 61:8-11) 8. For I, the Lord, love justice;i hate robbery and

wrongdoing. In my faithfulness I will reward my people and make an everlasting covenant with them. 9. Their descendants will be known among the nations and their offspring among the peoples. All who see them will acknowledge that they are a people the Lord has blessed. 10. I delight greatly in the Lord;my soul rejoices in my God. For he has clothed me with garments of salvation and arrayed me in a robe of his righteousness,as a bridegroom adorns his head like a priest, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. 11. For as the soil makes the sprout come up and a garden causes seeds to grow, so the Sovereign Lord will make righteousness and praise spring up before all nations. PRACTICAL POINTS FOR DISCUSSION: 1. We must recognize the Anointed One of this passage as the Lord Jesus Christ who will deliver those who are downcast when He returns (Isaiah 61:1; Luke 4:16-21).

2. We must always proclaim the day of God s grace as well as the day of His judgment (Isaiah 61:2). 3. Christ makes such a difference in a life that His presence is able to turn those who mourn into instruments who rejoice and bring glory to God (Isaiah 61:3). 4. Years of defeated living will result in a wasted life, but Christ can take the life that is sinful and destructive, miraculously transform it, and put it into a program of restoration and building (Isaiah 61:4). 5. When Messiah returns, God will restore justice to the earth and will make a new covenant with Israel (Isaiah 61:8). 6. The time is coming when God will honor His people Israel among the Gentiles (Isaiah 61:9). 7. When Messiah returns, God will cause righteousness and praise to flourish everywhere (Isaiah 61:10-11). ***The Bible Expositor and Illuminator, Union Gospel Press***
