2 Dear Ministry Leader, Greetings from the front lines of the Mission Field of New York City, The Most International City in the World. Founded in 1984, the New York School of Urban Ministry (NYSUM) hosts, trains, and deploys over 5,000 youth and adults each year by partnering with inner city pastors and churches throughout New York City. In addition to providing practical urban classroom teaching and training, NYSUM provides accommodations and home-style meals for small and large groups at our 70,000 square foot training campus. NYSUM s staff equips students from colleges, seminaries, Bible schools, youth groups, and church groups. Our students learn about inner-city ministry at the grassroots through diverse, cross-cultural, handson outreaches to Muslims, Jewish people, the homeless, abused women, the disabled, terminally ill, and those victimized by natural disasters. Our outreaches take place via street meetings, soup kitchens, rescue missions, city shelters, rehab centers, and more. We are also excited about our Food Truck ministry. We use this vehicle as a tool for citywide evangelism, partnering with pastors and churches throughout New York City. Yours for urban leadership, WHY SHORT-TERM MISSIONS IN NEW YORK CITY? Massive Population: New York City has a population of approximately 10 million people, more than the populations of 39 U.S. States. It is roughly equivalent to the combined populations of Los Angeles, Chicago, and Houston. Ethnic diversity: NYC is considered the Most International City in the World. Approximately 36% of New Yorkers are foreign born, and at least 200 languages are spoken here. Homelessness & Poverty: 14% of the U.S. homeless population resides in New York City. While the U.S. average is 13% living below the poverty line, 27.1% of the Bronx s population and 21.9% of Brooklyn s population live below the poverty line. Disaster Relief: As a result of the devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy, the need for helping needy and hurting New Yorkers has skyrocketed since late October 2012. Approximately 3.3 million New Yorkers experience difficulty affording food for themselves and their families, an increase of 60 percent since 2003. During Operation Drumstick, your team will be involved with feeding Thanksgiving meals to 5,000 needy people throughout New York City. These hurting people will receive a good old-fashioned Thanksgiving Dinner with all the trimmings: roasted turkey, corn bread stuffing, vegetables, cranberry sauce, and dessert. SERVING TOGETHER Last night at the domestic violence shelter, there was a teenage boy who was encouraged to come up and talk to us. We talked to him about Jesus and he asked if we would pray for his mother because she wanted a job so desperately. A united outreach to homeless people of New York City, who are often forgotten during the coldest season of the year. With the assistance of a team of people, NYSUM distributes food, blankets, toiletries, and clothing to over 3,000 homeless people on the streets, in the subways, and at shelters in the spirit of God s love. Teams also assist local churches and ministries with their community compassion outreach programs during these months. One of the most significant things that happened during my experience at NYSUM was talking to people and sharing the Gospel with people on the Staten Island Ferry. During Extreme Makeover Weekend, more than 150 women from at least eight States and various parts of Canada will help NYSUM provide more than 500 cosmetic and wardrobe makeovers for homeless and battered women in New York City homeless shelters. NYSUM s staff provide practical urban training before makeover outreach: One-on-one evangelism training Basic cosmetology training. Reflecting on her experience at recent Extreme Makeover Weekend, a pastor s wife from Ohio testified about this outreach by saying, In all my 35 years of ministry with my husband, I have never been so impacted as I have been through NYSUM S Extreme Makeover Weekend. EXTREME MAKEOVER IN ACTION One of the most significant things that happened during my experience at NYSUM was witnessing the team leader of our group ministering to a man at a drug rehab center and leading him to the Lord.
