Pastor Len Showalter, Cathy Russi, and Dennis Dixon left for Ecuador on Thursday, May 22nd. On their flight to Quito, Ecuador the team shared the Gospel with a Medical Doctor and he gave his heart to Christ! They got to their hotel around 11:30pm (12:30pm) EST. On the way to the airport for their short flight to Macas, Ecuador on Friday, May 23rd, Len, Cathy, and Dennis shared the taxi with Anna and she received salvation! The taxi driver 1
asked for them to pray for his wife with whom he is separated from. When they arrived in Macas, they were greeted by Pastor Ivan and Tania who were very kind and spent much time with them. They are staying at Hotel Nivel in downtown Macas. Pastor Len, Cathy, Tania, and Dennis It is a nice little town. It is peaceful and the people are very nice. There are many tourists going in and out of the jungle. It is considered the Amazon jungle. The team is near the Upono River which flows north. This area is a couple hundred miles south of the people in the movie, "End of the Spear." There is a similar native group not to far away. 2
Pastor Ivan and Tania in front of their church Saturday, May 24th, the group was unable to see the active volcano from another peak nearer the city because it was cloudy and rainy most of the day. They went to a Mom & Pop's Zoological Park. The owners rescue the animals and were very friendly towards them. It was amazing. They have probably raised many of them from when they were babies. 3
At the Zoo They also met Lois, a single woman in her 70's that has been a medical missionary for 50 years. Her base was Shell - the city where the missionaries were from (End of the Spear) and she knew them well. People here are her family. Macas is only 80 miles from Shell. She worked in a neighboring jungle village with the same kind of tribal people who were headhunters! Pastor Ivan and Tania joined the Americans for dinner as well as another couple joining them to chat for awhile. The woman that stopped by was with the Peace Corp. and married a local man who works for the government in Eco-tourism. Sunday, May 25th, Len will be preaching at Pastor Ivan's church (he is one of three pastors) and Dennis will probably be sharing at another church. During Sunday night's service, Cathy will be giving her testimony. Please be praying for these servants as they will be sharing the Gospel with many. Please pray that God uses them mightily and that they be guided by the Holy Spirit. 4
The team will be visiting an orphanage, school, and hospital while they are there in addition to taking the trainees out for street evangelism this coming week. MORE HISTORY ABOUT MACAS, ECUADOR... Macas is in the midst of Shuar territory. It was once known as the "head-hunting" J'ivaro, these indigenous people allow visits to traditional villages only with approved guides, in order to learn about their misunderstood culture. Sangay National Park, home to three volcanoes. The Sangay Volcano is the 7th largest in Ecuador and is currently one of the more active world volcanoes and sits at an elevation of 5250 mt. continuously spewing ash, stones and fumes. The Tungurahua Volcano also presently active and Altar volcano. The park's ecosystems range from tropical rain forest to paramo (moorland) and glacial. Among its varied wildlife you can see the famous Condor, mountain tapir, puma and ocelots. PLEASE PRAY...
