University Presbyterian Church Order of Worship October 14, 2018 10:00am 21st Sunday After Pentecost <<WE GATHER>> Choral Call to Worship: Our Song Shall Rise to Thee ECC Mandarin Choir; Lydia Chang, director Holy, Holy, Holy! O, Lord God Almighty! Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee. Holy, Holy, Holy! Merciful and mighty! God in three persons, blessed Trinity! Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord, all the saints adore thee, Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea; Cherubim and seraphim falling down before thee, Which wert and art, and ever more be. Holy, Holy, Holy! though the darkness hide thee, Though the eye made blind by sin thy glory may not see, only thou art holy, there is none beside thee, perfect in power, in love and purity, love and purity. Holy, Holy, Holy! O, Lord God almighty! All thy works shall praise thy name in earth and sky and sea; Holy, Holy, Holy! Merciful and might! God in three persons, Blessed Trinity! Sermon: A Beloved Truth Alex Cui Text: Ephesians 1:7-10 7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace 8 that he lavished on us. With all wisdom and insight 9 he has made known to us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure that he set forth in Christ, 10 as a plan for the fullness of time, to gather up all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth. << WE RESPOND>> Prayers of the People & the Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

He learned of the gospel of Jesus salvation in 1994 when he taught at a university in China. He and his wife Grace decided to follow Jesus and were baptized at a house church. He recognized that the Lord was calling him to full-time ministry after he moved to the U.S., and went to New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. Upon graduation, God led him to Seattle to serve at Evangelical Chinese Church (ECC). For the past 15 years, he has been one of the Mandarin Pastors at ECC. NEW SERMON SERIES SPEAKING THE TRUTH IN LOVE: Embodying a New Humanity for a Divided World The gospel brings peace and unity. What could be more needed today? It s not just that we seem to be losing the ability to speak respectfully to one another across lines that divide us (ethnicity, culture, politics, economics, lifestyle...). It s that we don t seem to talk to people outside our tribes at all. Whether we are afraid to do it or just don t know how, it doesn t
have to be this way. For the sake of our future, it can t be this way. The work of justice and reconciliation requires it. The good news is that Jesus Christ offers another way. Speak the truth in love, the letter of Ephesians tells us. It was written to a region divided in as many ways as ours, but it invites us to a new peace and unity grounded in the claim that someone had come back from the dead. The letter explores the implications of that claim and expounds the ways it completely reshapes how we speak to one another. Let s read the text and re-engage the conversation. To request Chancel flowers in memory or in honor of a loved one, please contact Bob Davies in the Worship department (x143, bobd@upc.org). Families with young children are always welcome to worship together in the Sanctuary. The service is also played on closed-circuit TV in Knox Parlor, just outside the Sanctuary, which is available for parents and children, if desired. CONDOLENCES Our sympathies to the Snow family in the loss of Tim s father, Charles Snow, who died October 9. Our sympathies to the family and friends of Jack Faulkner who died 9/11/18.
