A message from Pastor Dave: ESCAPING THE BONDAGE OF YOUR SIN Seeing Things the Way They Really Are John 9:1-7, 35-41 What made this story stand out was that the man healed of blindness had been that way since he was born. He was a hopeless case. Jesus gave him his sight, as a miracle, physically and spiritually. He could sing with John Newton, I once was blind but now I see. Admitting your hopelessness to yourself & God is the starting point to bringing His healing. The disciples conclusion for the man s blindness was that God was operating on a reward system. The blind man s misfortune was proof of God s judgment. That is a default setting for many of us. That is shown to be totally false. Not only was God not paying the man back for his or his parent s sin but He wanted to fix what went wrong in the first place. All God required was for the blind man to allow God to fix his problem. The blind man was made whole. There were many doubters who argued that the man could not be the object of God s love or that Jesus could be the God in the flesh Who performed it. There are Two Main Ideas, God s Favor is Earned or Free 1 As He passed by, He saw a man blind from birth. 2 And His disciples asked Him, Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he would be born blind? 3 Jesus answered, It was neither that this man sinned, nor his parents; but it was so that the works of God might be displayed in him. 4 We must work the works of Him who sent Me as long as it is day; night is coming when no one can work. 5 While I am in the world, I am the Light of the world. 6 When He had said this, He spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and applied the clay to his eyes, 7 and said to him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam (which is translated, Sent). So he went away and washed, and came back seeing. You Can Not Remain Neutral, Will You Believe that Jesus Heals? 35 Jesus heard that they had put him out, and finding him, He said, Do you believe in the Son of Man? 36 He answered, Who is He, Lord that I may believe in Him? 37 Jesus said to him, You have both seen Him, and He is the one who is talking with you. 38 And he said, Lord, I believe. And he worshiped Him. 39 And Jesus said, For judgment I came into this world, so that those who do not see may see, and that those who see may become blind. 40 Those of the Pharisees who were with Him heard these things and said to Him, We are not blind too, are we? 41 Jesus said to them, If you were blind, you would have no sin; but since you say, We see, your sin remains. Jn. 9:1-41 SUMMING UP, SEE YOUR SPIRITUAL NEED AS IT REALLY IS. EVEN GOOD PEOPLE NEED RESCUE 6 For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For one will hardly die for a righteous man; though perhaps for the good man someone would dare even to die. 8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him. 10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. 11 And not only this, but we also exult in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation. Romans 5:6-11 Is there some limitation or lack that you re interpreting as a sign of God s displeasure or judgment? It s easy to do. Maybe it deserves a second look. Might He be ready to show His glory through you? He s a God of delightful surprises!
