Chuck Horner reminded the group that this coming Sunday is Hayward Rotary s day for serving at the Salvation Army and asked that people sign up on the sheet being circulated. Fine Time cont.: Brian Schott - for Jackie Flynn s birthday, because he sponsored her Brian Schott - for trying to persuade other Rotarians to hide the (stolen) Hayward Rotary s official brass bell. Judge Hashimoto and Charley Plummer took part in Brian s trial. New Member: President Paul called up Christine Johnson to be inducted into Hayward Rotary along with her sponsor Ashton Simmons. Pres. Paul Martin, Christine Johnson & Ashton Simmons Vocational Talk: Joel Peña gave his Vocational Talk and shared some of his experiences as a new member of the Hayward Rotary Club. He has enjoyed meeting various members and participating in Club activities. He mentioned, in particular, Rev. Chuck Horner and the others who come to prepare the Salvation Army dinner every 4th Sunday for the work they do and the camaraderie that he felt there. He also displayed the bracelet he received for participating in the Club s Choices program. He talked glowingly about his mother and his family and said he was looking forward to continue being a Hayward Rotarian. Joel Peña Today s Program Vocational Awards Michael Cobb, this year s Chair of the Vocational Awards Committee introduced each of the award winners and the people who nominated each one. Private Sector Recipient Kaetlyn Lucas Foothill Locksmiths Nominated by Kim Huggett. Some highlights of her nomination were: Kaetlyn is part of the 4th generation in this family business. Has brought latest technological advancements for use there and for marketing as well. She is emphasizing going green through reducing paper use, increasing recycling, and switching to environmentally-friendly products wherever possible. Commitment to community service continues to be a priority with Katelyn as a Girl Scouts mentor and coordinator of Day Camp activities at the Hayward Plunge summer camp and as a volunteer at the Catholic Youth Organization s Outdoor Education science camp as well. Foothill Locksmiths has been in business in Hayward for 58 years. Kaetlyn Lucas Sally Murphy Public Sector Recipient Sally Murphy- Director of UG Education and General Studies at CSUEB - Nominated by Debby DeAngelis (and presented by Delmo Della Dora in Debby s absence). Professor Murphy has been at CSUEB for 24 years and leads the university s undergraduate education and the general studies program. In recent years she has worked with other staff members to increase the retention rate of the freshman classes most universities experience a 50% dropout rate among the members of their (first year) freshman class. Last year Prof. Murphy was one of only 10 educators to be nationally honored as an Outstanding First Year Student Advocate because of the dramatic increase in number of students retained at CSUEB and the quality of the program that has been instituted.

She is widely known as being always available to meet with students and helping them deal with any issues or problems they face. She is always willing to step in and help with public speaking whether it be for students, university police, or someone in the university president s office. Nonprofit Sector Steve Mullin Life Director All Saints Catholic Church Nominated by Brian Schott. Steve Mullin is one of only 475 parish life directors for the Catholic Church worldwide. This position replaces the role of the Catholic priest who serves as a pastor at that church. All Saints church has more than 3000 families (9,600 members) and has been serving Hayward since Hayward was founded. In this role Steve oversees the All Saints Catholic School as well. He also plays an active role to support bringing together the many diverse cultures in the parish and works with other helping agencies like the Family Emergency Shelter Program, the Community Action Network (CAN), and many student groups such as the Cal State Students Ministry. Mr. Mullin has been married to Robin and they have four children. He welcomes all Hayward Rotarians to take a tour of the 105 year old church.
