3PK October 10-11, 2015 2 Kings 22-23, 2 Chronicles 34 First 10 minutes of the service hour: Engage kids in cooperative play activities to help them connect to other kids Next 5 minutes: Connect Time Next 25 minutes: Large Group Josiah We can obey God Before each section of the hour, remind kids of how we re supposed to act, and why. When we go into Large Group, we need to listen and respect our leader. When we sit down for small group or playtime, we need to be kind to our friends and show love to them. Last 25 minutes: Snack and Small Group Ask kids to show you their picture, and see if they remember what it says/shows. Today we re learning about King Josiah. He was a great leader who loved God with all his heart and soul. His story will help us understand that when we love God with our whole heart, we should obey him with our whole heart.

GOAL: Connect time is all about engaging kids in a short, interactive game to prepare them for Large Group. Clean up! (10 minutes after the service start time, when you get the 5-minute warning from the presenter) Line kids up. Tell kids that we re going to learn some motions to show our most important rules in Kids Club. Demonstrate to kids: o Have fun (wiggle your body around) o Obey your leaders (point to a leader) o Listen (put your hands to your ears) o Share with others (put your hands out in front of you) After reviewing the motions with kids, tell them that you re going to say a rule, and they have to do the motion that goes along with it (be sure to demonstrate motions as you go) Say the rules multiple times, and change up the order, going faster and faster as you do! As you walk into Large Group, encourage kids to put on their listening ears! Remind them that HOPS will be showing us how we should act in Large Group, so we have to listen!

Goal: Kids will (1) retell the story of king Josiah and (2) understand that we can obey God because we love him. Why? Obedience is a vital part of having a relationship with God. For us to fully love him, we need to LISTEN and DO what he tells us, even when it s hard or scary. Tip: How have you had to obey God recently? If kids hear an example of how you did what God told you, it can help them understand that God calls EVERYONE to obey. REVIEW THE STORY 1. Who was the king that loved God? (Josiah) 2. Did he love God a little bit, or with his whole heart? (With his whole heart) 3. What did Josiah do when he read the book of God s rules? (He tore his clothes because he was upset that his people were not following God) 4. What did Josiah do to all the pretend Gods? (He destroyed them) 5. Does God want us to obey him too? (Yes) 6. How do you obey God? (Answers will vary; help kids remember some ways to obey God from the Large Group game, or come up with a way that you obey God) I CAN OBEY GOD Set out markers and glue sticks. Hand each kid a blank person cutout. Tell them to decorate their person just like themselves. It s a picture of them! Hand each kid an Kids Club coloring book. Once kids have colored their cutouts, have them glue it onto the blank page of the book. On one side of the book, it says I can obey God. Point to this as you repeat it to kids. If possible, ask them individually, Can you obey God? How? Just like King Josiah read a book of how to obey God, this picture looks like a book of how we can obey God too! *Pray for kids before they leave, asking God to help us obey him. Extra time? Have kids do a coloring sheet. Then, follow the leader or Simon Says. It s a great way to reinforce the concept of obedience!

1 You don t have to stay on stage! Sometimes it s helpful to engage kids by walking amongst them on the floor. It makes them feel like they re a part of the presentation. Here s a short video about King Josiah that we ll be watching: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dinc 8VHgFDU Hi Friends! Welcome to Kids Club. I'm and I'm really glad you're here today. Before we get started, I want you to meet my friend HOPS. She s going to remind us of the kind of choices we can make today in Kids Club. Video: HOPS: Put your listening ears on! (Fall theme) (Holding up the Bible for kids to see) This is God s story. Out of all the stories in the world, this story is the most important. Do you know what it s called? (Let kids respond the Bible.) That s right, the Bible! It s God s Rescue plan. In the beginning, God made the whole world and everything in it. And it was all GOOD. Give me a big thumbs up! (Let kids respond. Then change your tone.) But THEN, something bad happened. Adam and Eve disobeyed God, and all the wrong things came into the world. Things like sadness and death. Show me your sad face. (Let kids respond.) Even though Adam and Eve disobeyed God, God loved them anyway! He planned a great rescue so that Adam and Eve and you and me could be close to God again! Do you know who the rescuer is? (Let kids say: Jesus!) That s right! Jesus! INTRO: GOD S FAMILY DISOBEYS Part of God s rescue plan was to show his special family how to live, so that they could be close to him! Give me a thumbs up if you want to be close to God! (Let kids respond.) Me too. God s family wanted to be close to God, but something sad happened. (Make a sad face and talk in a somber voice.) They stopped listening to God. They decided to be close to idols instead. An idol is a fake God. It s just pretend, like a statue. (Click to show slide.) Look at that; does that statue talk? (Let kids say No ) Does it love us? (Let kids say No ) No way!

KING JOSIAH God s family had lots and lots of kings. One of these kings was named Josiah. Can you say, Josiah? (Let kids respond.) Good job! Josiah became a king when he was only 8! He was a kid just like you! Everybody show me with your fingers how old you are. (Let kids respond.) Josiah loved God with all his heart. Let s all put our hands on our heart to show how much we love God too. (Let kids respond.) Josiah listened to God, and did whatever God told him. One day, a man who was working for King Josiah found a very old book. Pretend to hold a book like this. (Hold your hands out as if holding a book.) Good job! This book was full of special rules that God made so that his people could be close to him. It was God s word. The thing is, God s people forgot about them! They didn t listen to God anymore! Everybody pretend to throw the book away. (Let kids respond.) That s what God s people did! They just threw the rules away! Give me a thumbs down. (Let kids respond.) JOSIAH OBEYS GOD When Josiah realized that everyone was doing wrong things, he tore his clothes! Can you believe it! He was really upset. Let s watch a video to see what happened next. As you watch, try to figure out if Josiah listened to God s rules. VIDEO: King Josiah Bible Story Wow! So did Josiah do what God wanted? (Let kids respond, Yes! ) That s right! He realized that everyone was worshipping those pretend idols, and he got rid of all of them! He decided to DO what God SAID we should do. He helped everyone follow God, and he told people how they should follow God too. WE CAN OBEY GOD Josiah obeyed God, and we can obey God too! To obey means that we do what God wants us to do. When we obey God, we get to be closer to him. We also have our own special book that shows us how to obey him. Do you know what it s called? (Let kids respond, Bible! ) Let s all stand up! I m going to tell you some ways that we can obey God, or not obey God. If it s a good way to obey, then put both your thumbs up and yell, Yes! If it s not a good way to obey god, shake your head and give me thumbs down. Ready? Can we obey God by listening to our grown ups? (Yes) Can we obey God by reading the Bible? (Yes) Can we obey God by making fun of someone? (No) Can we obey God by going to Kids Club? (Yes) Can we obey God by praying? (Yes) Can we obey God by not sharing any of our toys? (No) Can we obey God by telling him we love him? (Yes) Good job! Let s obey God right now by praying to him. PRAY (Break it down into small, repeatable phrases) Dear God. We love you. We want to obey you. Help us always follow you. A-men!

WORSHIP Another way to obey God is to worship him! We re going to watch a music video now that shows us God is our boss! Video: Boss of Me Song: Come With Me Song: Be Strong (extra song if you have time left over) Dismiss kids to small groups. (Be creative as you dismiss them. Ask them to come give you a high five first, or maybe tiptoe or hop to their groups.)
