Welcome to Hildersham Church We Wish You All a Very Happy Christmas ------------------------------------- You are cordially invited to stay for Seasonal Refreshments following this Service The Readers this year are representatives from the Seven Churches in which we are grouped; they are mainly drawn from the Seven Churches Choir which we hope represents the unity and common purpose in which we all work. We thank our Readers, the Choir and all who have worked tirelessly to make our Church so beautiful this Christmas
Today, as we all enjoy the children s performance, the beautifully sung carols and music that radiates all around the church and we all admire just how beautiful the Church looks with its Painted Chancel lit by well over 600 candles. I look back & equally rejoice in yesterday, when the Church was filled with joy and laughter as Hildersham s fine young people and their parents all helped in getting the church ready for you today. The children decorated the Christmas tree with Margaret Bate s Christmas decorations, the crib came out with all the wonderful pottery figures made by Hildersham children over the years and everyone helped in some way with either the candles, bringing in the Holy & Ivy or doing the flower arrangements, even Maria & Rachel s young children helped with sweeping the floor. The other thing to look back and rejoice with fond memories on, is Tony Crampin whose birthday it would have been today, and for many years it was Tony who got all the candles ready for this service. This photo of both Tony and Margaret is at a Church fete when there was a best hat competition in June 2006 Andrew WB
Processional Carol Once in Royal David s City Soloists only: All: Once in royal David's city stood a lowly cattle shed, where a mother laid her baby in a manger for his bed: Mary was that mother mild, Jesus Christ her little child. He came down to earth from heaven, who is God and Lord of all, and his shelter was a stable, and his cradle was a stall; with the poor, and meek and lowly lived on earth our Saviour holy. And, through all his wondrous childhood, he would honour and obey, love and watch the lowly maiden in whose gentle arms he lay: Christian children all must be mild, obedient, good as he. For he is our childhood's pattern, day by day like us he grew; he was little, weak and helpless, tears and smiles like us he knew. and he feeleth for our sadness, and he shareth in our gladness. And our eyes at last shall see him, through his own redeeming love; for that Child who seemed so helpless is our Lord in heaven above; and he leads his children on to the place where he is gone. Not in that poor lowly stable, with the oxen standing round, we shall see him; but in heaven, set at God's right hand on high; when like stars his children crowned, all in white shall wait around. Words: Cecil Frances Alexander (1818-1895), Music: Irby (Henry John Gauntlett, 1805-1876)

O tidings of comfort and joy, comfort and joy; O tidings of comfort and joy! From God our heavenly Father A blessèd angel came, And unto certain shepherds Brought tidings of the same, How that in Bethlehem was born The Son of God by name. Chorus
The shepherds at these tidings Rejoicèd much in mind, And left their flocks a-feeding In tempest, storm and wind, And went to Bethlehem straightway This blessèd Babe to find. Chorus But when to Bethlehem they came, Whereat this Infant lay, They found him in a manger Where oxen fed on hay; His mother Mary, kneeling, Unto the Lord did pray. Chorus Now to the Lord sing praises, All you within this place, And with true love and brotherhood Each other now embrace. The holy tide of Christmas All others doth efface. Chorus Anonymous Third Lesson Maureen Garrod (Weston Colville) Christ s birth and kingdom are foretold by Isaiah Isaiah 9. 2,6-7 Carol (all) Joy to the world Joy to the world! the Lord is come: let earth receive her King; let every heart prepare him room, and heaven and nature sing, and heaven and nature sing, and heaven, and heaven and nature sing. Joy to the world! the Saviour reigns; let us our songs employ, while fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains repeat the sounding joy, repeat the sounding joy, repeat, repeat the sounding joy.
He rules the world with truth and grace, and makes the nations prove the glories of his righteousness, and wonders of is love, and wonders of is love, and wonders, wonders of his love. Words: Isaac Watts (1674-1748), 1719 Music: Antioch (George Frederick Handel, 1685-1759, arranged Lowell Mason, 1792-1872 Fourth Lesson Stephen Johnson (Gt. Abington) The peace that Christ will bring is foreshown Choir Carol The little road to Bethlehem Words: Margaret Rosel - Music::Michael Head Carol (all) It came upon the midnight clear It came upon the midnight clear, that glorious song of old, from angels bending near the earth to touch their harps of gold: 'Peace on the earth, good will to men from heaven's all-gracious King!' The world in solemn stillness lay to hear the angels sing. Still through the cloven skies they come, with peaceful wings unfurled; and still their heavenly music floats o'er all the weary world: above its sad and lowly plains they bend on hovering wing; and ever o'er its Babel-sounds the blessed angels sing. Yet with the woes of sin and strife the world has suffered long; beneath the angel-strain have rolled two thousand years of wrong; and man, at war with man, hears not the love-song which they bring: O hush the noise, ye men of strife, and hear the angels sing. Isaiah 11. 1-4, 6-9
For lo, the days are hastening on, by prophet-bards foretold, when, with the ever-circling years, comes round the age of gold; when peace shall over all the earth its ancient splendours fling, and the whole world give back the song which now the angels sing. Edmund Hamilton Sears (1810-1876) - Music: Arthur Sullivan (1842-1900) Fifth Lesson Jenny Richards (Balsham) The Angel Gabriel salutes the Virgin Mary St. Luke 1. 26-35, 38 Scenes from Holy Trinity Church Hildersham Murals The Annunciation The Magnificat (all) MY soul doth magnify the Lord: and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded: the lowliness of his hand-maiden. For behold, from henceforth: all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me: and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him: throughout all generations. He hath shewed strength with his arm: he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
He hath put down the mighty from their seat: and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things: and the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel: as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed for ever. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen. Carol (All) O little town of Bethlehem O little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie! Above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by; yet in thy dark streets shineth the everlasting Light; the hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight. O morning stars, together proclaim the holy birth! and praises sing to God the King, and peace to men on earth. For Christ is born of Mary; and gathered all above, while mortals sleep, the angels keep their watch of wondering love. From the Black Hours How silently, how silently, the wondrous gift is given! So God imparts to human hearts the blessings of his heaven. No ear may hear his coming, but in this world of sin, where meek souls will receive him, still the dear Christ enters in.
O holy Child of Bethlehem, descend to us, we pray; cast out our sin and enter in, be born in us today. We hear the Christmas angels the great glad tidings tell; O come to us, abide with us, our Lord Emmanuel! Words: Phillips Brooks (1835-1893) - Music R Vaughan Williams(1872-1958) Sixth Lesson Mary Miles (Lt. Abington) St Luke tells of the Birth of Christ St Luke 2. 1, 3-7 The Holy Mother Mary & her young son Jesus Christ from our Tree of Jesse East Window by Clayton & Bell 1865
Now the Work of Christmas Begins When the song of the angels is stilled, when the star in the sky is gone, when the kings and princes are home, when the shepherds are back with their flocks, the work of Christmas begins: to find the lost, to heal the broken, to feed the hungry, to release the prisoner, to rebuild the nations, to bring peace among the people, to make music in the heart. And to radiate the Light of Christ, Every day, in every way, in all that we do and all that we say. Then the work of Christmas begins. Howard Thurman 1899-1981
Carol (all seated) The Gift Nearly two thousand years ago, under a starlight sky, many events were taking place as the ancients had prophesied. And a gift was given from heaven to earth, the everlasting light, so let us adore the Saviour born Emmanuel here tonight. Heavenly hosts of angels, praising God on high, sang of the promised child to come the Saviour, Jesus Christ. Chorus Darkness was over Bethlehem, brightly the stars did shine, showing the way to where he lay in a manger for all to find. Chorus Never before in history had there been such a sign; for God was born in human form for the sake of all mankind. And a gift was given from heaven to earth, the everlasting light, so let us adore the Saviour born Emmanuel here tonight. So let us adore him, Christ the Lord Emmanuel here tonight!
