The Gift of The Act 2:36 "Therefore let all the house of Israel know for certain that God has made Him both Lord and Christ--this Jesus whom you crucified." Act 2:37 Now when they heard this, they were pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Brethren, what shall we do?" 7 The Gift of The Act 2:38 Peter said to them, "Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Act 2:39 "For the promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God will call to Himself." 8 The Gift of The The Gift of The Eph 2:11 Therefore remember that formerly you, the Gentiles in the flesh, who are called "Uncircumcision" by the so-called "Circumcision," which is performed in the flesh by human hands-- Eph 2:12 remember that you were at that time separate from Christ, excluded from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope Eph 2:13 But now in Christ Jesus you who formerly were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. and without God in the world. 9 10 Introduction Great controversy has been and will continue to be, what is the gift of the Holy Spirit? Is it a gift given by the or is the Himself the gift? If it is a gift given by Him, is it a miraculous gift or a spiritual blessing? If it is the Himself, does He personally dwell in our bodies or through the Word? 11 What Is Not The Gift Of The? 1. It is not the baptism of the 2. It is not the temporary miraculous spiritual gifts 3. It is not the dwelling in Christians 12

Luk 24:48 "You are witnesses of these things. Luk 24:49 "And behold, I am sending forth the promise of My Father upon you; but you are to stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high." Act 1:4 Gathering them together, He commanded them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for what the Father had promised, "Which," He said, "you heard of from Me; Act 1:5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the not many days from now." 13 14 Act 1:8 but you will receive power when the has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth." Act 1:26 And they drew lots for them, and the lot fell to Matthias; and he was added to the eleven apostles. Act 2:1 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. Act 2:2 And suddenly there came from heaven a noise like a violent rushing wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 15 16 Act 2:3 And there appeared to them tongues as of fire distributing themselves, and they rested on each one of them. Act 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance. Act 2:5 Now there were Jews living in Jerusalem, devout men from every nation under heaven. Act 2:6 And when this sound occurred, the crowd came together, and were bewildered because each one of them was hearing them speak in his own language. 17 18

Act 2:16 but this is what was spoken of through the prophet Joel: Act 2:17 'AND IT SHALL BE IN THE LAST DAYS,' God says, 'THAT I WILL POUR FORTH OF MY SPIRIT ON ALL MANKIND; AND YOUR SONS AND YOUR DAUGHTERS SHALL PROPHESY, AND YOUR YOUNG MEN SHALL SEE VISIONS, AND YOUR OLD MEN SHALL DREAM Act 2:18 EVEN ON MY BONDSLAVES, BOTH MEN AND WOMEN, I WILL IN THOSE DAYS POUR FORTH OF MY SPIRIT And they shall prophesy. Act 2:19 'AND I WILL GRANT WONDERS IN THE SKY ABOVE AND SIGNS ON THE EARTH BELOW, BLOOD, AND FIRE, AND VAPOR OF SMOKE. DREAMS; 19 20 Act 2:20 'THE SUN WILL BE TURNED INTO DARKNESS AND THE MOON INTO BLOOD, BEFORE THE GREAT AND GLORIOUS DAY OF THE LORD SHALL COME. Act 2:21 'AND IT SHALL BE THAT EVERYONE WHO CALLS ON THE NAME OF THE LORD WILL BE SAVED.' Act 10:44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the fell upon all those who were listening to the message. Act 10:45 All the circumcised believers who came with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the had been poured out on the Gentiles also. 21 22 Act 10:46 For they were hearing them speaking with tongues and exalting God. Then Peter answered, Act 10:47 "Surely no one can refuse the water for these to be baptized who have received the just as we did, can he?" Act 10:48 And he ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then Act 11:15 "And as I began to speak, the fell upon them just as He did upon us at the beginning. Act 11:16 "And I remembered the word of the Lord, how He used to say, 'John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the.' they asked him to stay on for a few days. 23 24

Act 11:17 "Therefore if God gave to them the same gift as He gave to us also after believing in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could stand in God's way?" Act 11:18 When they heard this, they quieted down and glorified God, saying, "Well then, God has granted to the Gentiles also the repentance that leads to life." 25 It Is Not The Temporary Miraculous Spiritual Gifts Act 8:14 Now when the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent them Peter and John, Act 8:15 who came down and prayed for them that they might receive the. Act 8:16 For He had not yet fallen upon any of them; they had simply been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 26 It Is Not The Temporary Miraculous Spiritual Gifts Act 8:17 Then they began laying their hands on them, and they were receiving the. Act 8:18 Now when Simon saw that the Spirit was bestowed through the laying on of the apostles' hands, he offered them money, It Is Not The Temporary Miraculous Spiritual Gifts Act 8:19 saying, "Give this authority to me as well, so that everyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the." Act 8:20 But Peter said to him, "May your silver perish with you, because you thought you could obtain the gift of God with money! 27 28 It Is Not The Temporary Miraculous Spiritual Gifts 1Co 13:8 Love never fails; but if there are gifts of prophecy, they will be done away; if there are tongues, they will cease; if there is knowledge, it will be done away. 1Co 13:9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part; 1Co 13:10 but when the perfect comes, the partial will be done away. What Is Not The Gift Of The? 1. It is not the baptism of the 2. It is not the temporary miraculous spiritual gifts 3. It is not the dwelling in Christians 29 30

The Gift of The 1. What is not the gift of the? What Is Not The Gift Of The? 1. It is not the baptism of the 2. It is not the temporary miraculous spiritual gifts 3. It is not the dwelling in Christians 31 32 The Gift of The Act 2:38 Peter said to them, "Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Act 2:39 "For the promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God will call to Himself." 33 It Is Not The Dwelling In Christians The two most likely choices for the gift of the are either it is the Holy Spirit Himself or something that the Holy Spirit gives to all who obey the gospel The grammar in Acts 2:38 does not help us because either meaning is possible As Christians continue to obey the Word of God, the, along with the Father and the Son, dwell in us 34 It Is Not The Dwelling In Christians The dwelling or abiding is not a bodily personal dwelling but is done through the gospel The immediate context of Acts 2 and remote context of the Bible point to a promised gift given by the to all Christians not the Spirit Himself being the gift It Is Not The Dwelling In Christians Rom 8:9 However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him. Rom 8:10 If Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is alive because of righteousness. 35 36

It Is Not The Dwelling In Christians Rom 8:11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you. It Is Not The Dwelling In Christians Rom 8:1 Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. Rom 8:2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death. 37 38 It Is Not The Dwelling In Christians Col 3:16 Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God. What Is Not The Gift Of The? 1. It is not the baptism of the 2. It is not the temporary miraculous spiritual gifts 3. It is not the dwelling in Christians 39 40 What Is The Gift Of The Holy Spirit? Again, much controversy about the meaning of the gift of the Many Christians sincerely believe it is the Himself who dwells in all Christians In the past, I have believed this also As I have studied more over the years, I have come to a different conclusion but I could be wrong and will continue to study What Is The Gift Of The Holy Spirit? The promise in Acts 2:39 is tied to Acts 2:21 On Pentecost after being exalted to the right hand of the Father, Jesus pours forth power and blessings from the Foretold by Joel, the Spirit poured out prophetic revelation, miraculous confirmation and spiritual salvation and urge all to do so 41 42

What Is The Gift Of The Holy Spirit? Jesus Death and Resurrection Foretold By David and Accomplished By God Jesus Death and Resurrection Foretold By David and Accomplished By God Act 2:22 "Men of Israel, listen to these words: Jesus the Nazarene, a man attested to you by God with miracles and wonders and signs which God performed through Him in your midst, just as you yourselves know-- Act 2:23 this Man, delivered over by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you nailed to a cross by the hands of Act 2:24 "But God raised Him up again, putting an end to the agony of death, since it was impossible for Him to be held in its power. Act 2:25 "For David says of Him, 'I SAW THE LORD ALWAYS IN MY PRESENCE; FOR HE IS AT MY RIGHT HAND, SO THAT I WILL NOT BE SHAKEN. godless men and put Him to death. 49 50 Jesus Death and Resurrection Foretold By David and Accomplished By God Act 2:26 'THEREFORE MY HEART WAS GLAD AND MY TONGUE EXULTED; MOREOVER MY FLESH ALSO WILL LIVE IN HOPE; Act 2:27 BECAUSE YOU WILL NOT ABANDON MY SOUL TO HADES, NOR ALLOW YOUR HOLY ONE TO UNDERGO DECAY. Jesus Death and Resurrection Foretold By David and Accomplished By God Act 2:28 'YOU HAVE MADE KNOWN TO ME THE WAYS OF LIFE; YOU WILL MAKE ME FULL OF GLADNESS WITH YOUR PRESENCE.' 51 52 God Exalts Jesus and Gives Him Authority As Lord And Christ Act 2:29 "Brethren, I may confidently say to you regarding the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. Act 2:30 "And so, because he was a prophet and knew that GOD HAD SWORN TO HIM WITH AN OATH TO SEAT one OF HIS DESCENDANTS ON HIS THRONE, God Exalts Jesus and Gives Him Authority As Lord And Christ Act 2:31 he looked ahead and spoke of the resurrection of the Christ, that HE WAS NEITHER ABANDONED TO HADES, NOR DID His flesh SUFFER DECAY. Act 2:32 "This Jesus God raised up again, to which we are all witnesses. 53 54

God Exalts Jesus and Gives Him Authority As Lord And Christ Act 2:33 "Therefore having been exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He has poured forth this which you both see and hear. 2Sa 7:12 "When your days are complete and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your descendant after you, who will come forth from you, and I will establish his God Exalts Jesus and Gives Him Authority As Lord And Christ 2Sa 7:16 "Your house and your kingdom shall endure before Me forever; your throne shall be established forever."'" Jer 33:17 "For thus says the LORD, 'David shall never lack a man to sit on the throne of the house of Israel; kingdom. 55 56 God Exalts Jesus and Gives Him Authority As Lord And Christ Act 2:34 "For it was not David who ascended into heaven, but he himself says: 'THE LORD SAID TO MY LORD, "SIT AT MY RIGHT HAND, Act 2:35 UNTIL I MAKE YOUR ENEMIES A FOOTSTOOL FOR YOUR FEET."' Act 2:36 "Therefore let all the house of Israel know for certain that God has made Him both Lord and Christ--this Jesus whom Salvation Given To All Who Obey The Gospel Act 2:37 Now when they heard this, they were pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Brethren, what shall we do?" Act 2:38 Peter said to them, "Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. you crucified." 57 58 Salvation Given To All Who Obey The Gospel Act 2:39 "For the promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God will call to Himself." Rom 10:13 for "WHOEVER WILL CALL ON THE NAME OF THE LORD WILL BE SAVED." Salvation Given To All Who Obey The Gospel Rom 10:14 How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in Him whom they have not heard? And how will they hear without a preacher? Rom 10:17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ. 59 60

The Gift of The 1. What is not the gift of the? 2. What is the gift of the? 61 What Is The Gift Of The Holy Spirit? All who call on the name of the Lord by repenting and being baptized in Jesus name receive forgiveness of sins and the gift of salvation Salvation includes justification (freed from guilt) by faith and eternal inheritance, eternal life The promise of salvation was given to Abraham, David and the prophets and fulfilled in Christ 62 Promise of Salvation Made To Abraham and His Response Gen 12:1 Now the LORD said to Abram, "Go forth from your country, And from your relatives And from your father's house, To the land which I will show you; Gen 12:2 And I will make you a great nation, And I will bless you, And make your name great; And so you shall be a blessing; 63 Promise of Salvation Made To Abraham and His Response Gen 12:3 And I will bless those who bless you, And the one who curses you I will curse. And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed." Gen 12:4 So Abram went forth as the LORD had spoken to him; and Lot went with him. Now Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran. Gen 15:6 Then he believed in the LORD; and He reckoned it to him as righteousness. 64 Promise of Salvation Made To Abraham and His Response Gen 22:15 Then the angel of the LORD called to Abraham a second time from heaven, Gen 22:16 and said, "By Myself I have sworn, declares the LORD, because you have done this thing and have not withheld your son, your only son, Promise of Salvation Made To Abraham and His Response Gen 22:17 indeed I will greatly bless you, and I will greatly multiply your seed as the stars of the heavens and as the sand which is on the seashore; and your seed shall possess the gate of their enemies. Gen 22:18 "In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice." 65 66

Promise To Abraham Repeated In The Prophets Act 3:19 "Therefore repent and return, so that your sins may be wiped away, in order that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord; Act 3:24 "And likewise, all the prophets who have spoken, from Samuel and his successors onward, also announced these days. 67 Promise To Abraham Repeated In The Prophets Act 3:25 "It is you who are the sons of the prophets and of the covenant which God made with your fathers, saying to Abraham, 'AND IN YOUR SEED ALL THE FAMILIES OF THE EARTH SHALL BE BLESSED.' Act 3:26 "For you first, God raised up His Servant and sent Him to bless you by turning every one of you from your wicked ways." 68 Gal 3:6 Even so Abraham BELIEVED GOD, AND IT WAS RECKONED TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS. Gal 3:7 Therefore, be sure that it is those who are of faith who are sons of Abraham. Gal 3:8 The Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, "ALL THE NATIONS WILL BE BLESSED IN YOU." Gal 3:9 So then those who are of faith are blessed with Abraham, the believer. 69 70 Gal 3:13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us-- for it is written, "CURSED IS EVERYONE WHO HANGS ON A TREE"-- Gal 3:14 in order that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we would receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. 71 Gal 3:15 Brethren, I speak in terms of human relations: even though it is only a man's covenant, yet when it has been ratified, no one sets it aside or adds conditions to it. Gal 3:16 Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. He does not say, "And to seeds," as referring to many, but rather to one, "And to your seed," that is, Christ. 72

Gal 3:17 What I am saying is this: the Law, which came four hundred and thirty years later, does not invalidate a covenant previously ratified by God, so as to nullify the promise. Gal 3:18 For if the inheritance is based on law, it is no longer based on a promise; but God has granted it to Abraham by means of a promise. 73 Gal 3:22 But the Scripture has shut up everyone under sin, so that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe. Gal 3:26 For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. Gal 3:27 For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. 74 Gal 3:28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. Gal 3:29 And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's descendants, heirs according to promise. Rom 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, Rom 3:24 being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus; 75 76 Rom 3:25 whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in His blood through faith. This was to demonstrate His righteousness, because in the forbearance of God He passed over the sins previously committed; Rom 3:26 for the demonstration, I say, of His righteousness at the present time, so that He would be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. 77 Rom 4:3 For what does the Scripture say? "ABRAHAM BELIEVED GOD, AND IT WAS CREDITED TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS." Rom 4:4 Now to the one who works, his wage is not credited as a favor, but as what is due. 78

Rom 4:5 But to the one who does not work, but believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited as righteousness, Rom 4:6 just as David also speaks of the blessing on the man to whom God credits righteousness apart from works: Rom 4:7 "BLESSED ARE THOSE WHOSE LAWLESS DEEDS HAVE BEEN FORGIVEN, AND WHOSE SINS HAVE BEEN COVERED. Rom 4:8 "BLESSED IS THE MAN WHOSE SIN THE LORD WILL NOT TAKE INTO ACCOUNT." 79 80 Rom 4:18 In hope against hope he believed, so that he might become a father of many nations according to that which had been spoken, "SO SHALL YOUR DESCENDANTS BE." Rom 4:19 Without becoming weak in faith he contemplated his own body, now as good as dead since he was about a hundred years old, and the deadness of Sarah's Rom 4:20 yet, with respect to the promise of God, he did not waver in unbelief but grew strong in faith, giving glory to God, Rom 4:21 and being fully assured that what God had promised, He was able also to perform. Rom 4:22 Therefore IT WAS ALSO CREDITED TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS. womb; 81 82 Rom 4:23 Now not for his sake only was it written that it was credited to him, Rom 4:24 but for our sake also, to whom it will be credited, as those who believe in Him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead, Rom 4:25 He who was delivered over because of our transgressions, and was raised because of our justification. 83 Eph 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; Eph 2:9 not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. Eph 2:10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them. 84

Rom 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Why Not Receive The Gift of The Today? Act 2:36 "Therefore let all the house of Israel know for certain that God has made Him both Lord and Christ--this Jesus whom you crucified." Act 2:37 Now when they heard this, they were pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Brethren, what shall we do?" 85 86 Why Not Receive The Gift of The Today?
