IT S DUES TIME Most Lodges have extended the date for Lodge dues to be remitted until April. If you haven t gotten your dues in yet, now is the time. Every year the task is initiated to contact those Brethren who have not paid their dues. In many cases, members are suspended for non-payment of dues because we have no current information on them in order to make contact. During my year as Worshipful Master, we were voting on suspensions only to have a Brother stand up to announce that the member we were about to suspend was a good friend of his and that the member had passed away a couple weeks prior. Up to that time, no one ever reported the death to our Secretary or any other person; therefore, we were about to suspend a deceased Brother. How many times has this happened? I encourage you to let your family members know that if your status changes, they need to contact your Lodge Secretary and report it. Often a family member believes there is no reason to pay your dues since you cannot get to Lodge meetings because of health issues and as a result you are suspended. By paying your dues and being in good Masonic standing you and/or your spouse may be eligible to take advantage of some of the services offered by the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania through the Masonic Outreach Program. These include: financial assistance, an attorney to provide legal counsel, a finance panel to assist with basic financial and budgeting skills, a durable medical equipment loan closet and assistance in helping you understand what services may be available to you and make referral information available on community and governmental programs. Masonic Funerals are also an option your family may request. Remember, your family must make the request to the Lodge for a Masonic Funeral, it is not automatic. Please make it a point to let your family know if you would like a Masonic Funeral when you pass and provide them the information on who to contact when that time comes.
SECRETARY S NOTE Forget the hasty, unkind word; Forget the slander you have heard; Forget the quarrel and the cause, Forget the whole affair, because, Forgetting is the only way. Forget the storm of yesterday. Forget the knocker, and the squeak; Forget the bad day of the week. Forget you re not a millionaire; Forget the grey streaks in your hair; Forget to even get the blues But Don t Forget To Pay your Dues! (Eric Scottish Rite News) SOLOMON S WORD BUILDER At some point in your Masonic journey, you may have heard these words spoken. Test your word-power knowledge. This puzzle was created by Br. Robert A. Poland, II and found in the Indiana Freemason magazine. 1. Approbation: A. Penalty for breaking law, B. The act of approving; C. Plea for leniency; D. Forgiveness 2. Lewis: A. Half an exploring team; B. The minor son of a Mason; C. Jerry s last name; D. All of the above 3. Superfluities: A. High pressure water; B. A computer semiconductor; C. Funny human traits; D. Beyond what is needed 4. Recapitulate: A. To cut off one s head; B. Devise for launching rocks; C. To sum up; D. To capture 5. Libertine: A. The roof of the mouth; B. Liniment for sore muscles; C. Against communism; D. Loose in morals (1) B (2) B (3). D (4) C (5). D DID YOU KNOW? The nine Masons who signed the Declaration of Independence were: William Ellery - Rhode Island, Benjamin Franklin Pennsylvania, John Hancock Massachusetts, Joseph Hewes North Carolina, William Hopper North Carolina, Robert Treat Paine - Massachusetts, Richard Stockton New Jersey, George Walton Georgia and William Whipple New Hampshire. What are the Golden Fleece, Roman Eagle, Star and Garter? The Order of the Golden Fleece was founded by Philip, Duke of Burgandy in 1429. The Roman Eagle was Rome s symbol and ensign of power and might a hundred years before Christ. The Order of the Star was created by John II of France in the middle of the Fourteenth Century. The Order of the Garter was founded by Edward III of England in 1349 for himself and twenty-five Knights of the Garter. That the use of the apron as a badge is more ancient than these is a provable fact. In averring that it is more honorable, the premise when worthily worn is understood. The apron is more honorable than the Star and Garter when all that it teaches is exemplified in the life of the wearer. One Hundred One Questions About Freemasonry, The Masonic Service Association Quote of the Month "Freemasonry has endured not because of its antiquity, its influence, or its social standing, but because there have been so many who have lived it. The effectiveness of Masonic teachings will always be the measure by which the outside world judges Freemasonry; the proof of Freemasonry is in our deeds and it is in our deeds that Freemasonry is made known to non-masons. The only way that the Craft can be judged is by its product. The prestige of Freemasonry lies squarely on the shoulders of each of us." G. Wilbur Best Extracted - Southern California Research Lodge 'Fraternal Review', May 2004 THIS MONTH IN HISTORY February 25, 1870 Bro. Hiram R. Revels, (R-Miss,) became the first African-American member of US Senate when he was sworn in to serve out the unexpired term of Jefferson Davis. A Prince Hall Freemason, he served as Grand Chaplain of the Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Ohio. At the outbreak of the Civil War he helped organize the first two African-American regiments in Maryland. He also served as Chaplain of one of these regiments. He died January 16, 1901.
