BECOMING DISCIPLES THROUGH BIBLE STUDY Disciple Bible Study with Dr. Vaughn Story

Becoming a Disciple through Bible Study 66 books in 34 weeks = 1 Amazing Journey Learn how to be a faithful follower of Jesus Christ directly from the whole text of the Bible. Whether you are a newbie to the Bible or someone who has some knowledge of the Bible, we invite you to join our new Disciple Bible Study (DBS) course in this coming semester. DBS is a 34-week adult Bible study that explores the books of the Bible in sequential order, spending 17 weeks exploring the Old Testament and 17 weeks on the New Testament. Through interactive teaching by our experienced instructor Vaughn Story (M.Div., D.Min.) and open discussions on popular subjects like various biblical interpretations, Church history, denominational teachings and Christian doctrine, you can become an equipped disciple. We will be offering two classes this fall. Class A begins on Tuesday, August 7, and Class B begins on Thursday, August 9. Those interested in participating in either class must enroll by attending only one of the following orientation sessions: Tuesday, July 24 or July 31; Thursdays, July 26 or August 2, at 6:30-7:30 in Room 2818. God s Word has once again become alive and renewed in my heart. Some of the things discussed in DBS I have known all of my Christian life, but I gained new perspective and fresh insights into the heart of God! The entire study was a high point in my week. I sometimes arrived harried and exhausted from my job and often just wanted to go home; however, God never failed to refresh me during the class time. Teri P. Mandatory Preview/Enrollment Meeting Must attend ONE of the four preview and enrollment meetings: Tuesday, July 24 Tuesday, July 31 Thursday July 26 Thursday, August 2 6:30-7:30 pm, Room 2818 This is an opportunity to meet the teacher and learn more about the content, structure and time commitment At the end of the meeting, you may officially enroll in the course Do you often wonder how Christians connect what the Bible says to daily living? DBS is foundational for answering your question. DBS maintains a high view of the Bible: Bible book writers were real people in ancient history, uniquely inspired by God to compose the content of the Bible, which remains culturally and personally relevant for us today. DBS affirms that all the books of the Bible were written so God may speak to us. DBS emphasizes the wonderful unity of the Bible. The course devotes equal time to studying the Old and New Testaments. DBS focuses on biblical transformation, not merely biblical information. The course encourages people to examine their lives in the light of the Scriptures and to yield themselves to the authority and transforming power of God s Word. DBS invites people to apply the Scripture to their past and present challenges and struggles to be a faithful disciple of Jesus Christ. Required Designed for adults 19 years and older who know nothing to something about the Bible Desire to read and study the Bible Purchase study Bible, if not owned Weekly access to the Internet and an email account Regular attendance to a weekly, two-hour long class The cost for DBS is $ 140 per participant or $ 270 per couple and includes your workbook and all supplemental material. For information on financial assistance, please contact Kim Renkema at krenkema@asburytulsa.org Schedule Evening classes on either Tuesday or Thursday Class A: Tuesday, August 7, 6:30-8:30 pm, Room 2818 (child care is available for children 6-weeks old through 12-years old) Class B: Thursday, August 9, 6:30-8:30 pm, Room 2818 (no child care available) Course is 34 weeks long Begins and ends within a public school s academic calendar year Time off is scheduled for major holidays, Asbury all-church events, public school s fall and spring break

Vaughn s Story Vaughn and his wife are members of Asbury United Methodist Church and members of the Christian Explorers Community. Vaughn is self employed and does consulting, Bible teaching, freelance writing and professional pastoral counseling in Tulsa. In 2005, his devotional book, Water from the Rock Classic Edition, was published nationally by Honor Books and went through two printings. He retains his credentials as a licensed, ordained minister with the United Methodist Church. He has more than 20 years of pastoral experience in Oklahoma. Between 1992-2000, he administrated Tulsa s First United Methodist Church s short-term, cross-cultural ministry and missionary support fundraising. He has also ministered in more than 30 countries. If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples. Vaughn completed his undergraduate degree in music and a graduate degree in theology from Oral Roberts University. He has an earned doctor in theology from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. John 8:31 (English Standard Version)

What is the focus of DBS? The focus of DBS is helping persons learn directly from the text of the Bible, through a study of the whole Bible, how to be a faithful follower of the Lord Jesus Christ. For whom is this course designed? The course is designed for adults (19 years and older) who know nothing or something about the content of the Bible. FAQs on Upcoming DBS course with Dr. Vaughn Story What is required of a person to participate in this course? Participants need a desire to read and study the Bible, a good study Bible and a purchased copy of the Disciple Bible Study Manual (included in course fee) and weekly access to a personal Internet email account. Additionally, participants must be willing to set aside regular times throughout the week to read and study assigned passages in their Bible and study manual. Regular attendance to a weekly, two-hour long, small-group experience is also required. What is Disciple Bible Study (DBS)? DBS is a 34-week course for adults to read and survey the books of the Bible from Genesis through Revelation. This course explores the Bible s recurring key ideas and major themes and helps participants put together the pieces of disconnected biblical understanding acquired so far in their life. Seventeen weeks of the first semester are spent exploring the Old Testament, and 17 weeks of the second semester are spent exploring the New Testament. Two concurrent DBS evening classes are offered for adults. Persons may choose to enroll in a Tuesday or a Thursday evening class.

What is the schedule for the course? This course begins and ends within the time span of a public school s academic year. Times off from weekly classes are scheduled for major holidays, Asbury all-church annual events, and public schools fall and spring breaks. What happens in class? Participants meet together once a week for two hours to share and discuss their insights from the past week s assigned Bible and study manual readings. Class activities are focused on learning how to practice Christian discipleship by applying materials read and studied at home and information viewed, taught and discussed during class. DBS is led by a well-trained, experienced teacher who uses different teaching methodologies to complement various adult learning styles. How large are the classes? Participation in each one of the two classes is limited to 106 persons. The class seating arrangement consists of six-person small groups seated at round tables. How do I sign up for this course? Those wanting to participate in either the Tuesday OR the Thursday evening DBS class must attend only ONE of the following four scheduled Orientation and Review meetings: Tuesday, July 24 or July 31, OR Thursday, July 26 or August 2. All Orientation and Review meetings will meet on these days from 6:30-7:30 pm in Room 2818. Each meeting is an opportunity to meet the teacher and to learn more about the course s content, structure and time commitment. At the conclusion of each meeting, persons may officially enroll in the course and receive their DBS Manual. Total cost for the course is $140 per participant or $270 per couple, which includes your workbook and all supplemental material for both semesters. DBS Week #1 classes begin as follows: Class A Tuesday, August 7, 6:30-8:30 pm, Room 2818 (child care is available for children 6-weeks old through 12-years old) Class B Thursday, August 9, 6:30-8:30 pm, Room 2818 (no child care available)

I have experienced a gradual change in my life, specifically my prayer life and time. I have noticed that the content and time of my prayers have changed drastically. My prayer life is not a wish list anymore but a conversation with my Lord and Friend. Asbury United Methodist Church 6767 S.
