Worship for Rogation Sunday This service begins in church and then moves around the village or community or the churchyard or the church, if remaining in the church suitable symbols could be placed around the building as a focus for the reflections. Please adapt to suit your circumstances The Greeting Grace, mercy and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you and also with you. l Alleluia! Christ is risen. He is risen indeed. Alleluia! Hymn 1 Morning has broken like the first morning; blackbird has spoken like the first bird. Praise for the singing! Praise for the morning! Praise for them, springing fresh from the Word! 2 Sweet the rain s new fall, sunlit from heaven, like the first dew-fall on the first grass. Praise for the sweetness of the wet garden, sprung from completeness where his feet pass. 3 Mine is the sunlight! Mine is the morning born of the one light Eden saw play! Praise with elation, praise ev ry morning, God s re-creation of the new day! 1

Opening We come before you our God and Sustainer, remembering that you are our Creator and the source of all being. Out of your love the universe was born. From primordial darkness you put in place all that is needed for growth and saw that it was good. You have put this world into our hands: may we recognise your Spirit within it, disturbing and challenging us to care for creation, for the weak and the deprived. Lord we remember that we are called by you to nourish the earth and its diversity of life, to share the gifts you have given, with one another and with the poor of the world. Amen s of Penitence Let us ask God to have mercy on our tired land, and to prosper the work of our soiled hands. Let us ask God to forgive our delusion of self-sufficiency so that we may praise him for his provision and goodness. Lord, you give us this good earth, yet we take your generous gifts for granted. Blessing and Dismissal God the Father, who created the world, give you grace to be wise stewards of his creation. God the Son, who redeemed the world, inspire you to go out as labourers into his harvest. God the Holy Spirit, whose breath fills the whole of creation, help you to bear his fruits of love, joy and peace. And the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you, and remain with you always. All Tend the earth, care for God s good creation, and bring forth the fruits of righteousness. Go in the peace of Christ. Thanks be to God. Thanks to the Revd. Nicky Carnall for her help with this liturgy. serve you with responsibility, reverence and joy, and look for that day when the whole creation shall be made perfect in your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ, who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Hymn 1 For the fruits of his creation, For his gifts to every nation, For the ploughing, sowing, reaping, silent growth while we are sleeping; future needs in earth s safe seeking, thanks be to God. 2 In the just reward of labour, God s will is done; in the help we give our neighbour, God s will is done; in our worldwide task of caring for the hungry and despairing; in the harvests we are sharing, God s will is done. 3 For the harvests of the Spirit For the good we all inherit, For the wonders that astound us, for the truths that still confound us; most of all, that love has found us, thanks be to God. 10 Collect Lord, you give us this good earth, but we squander its rich resources. Christ, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, you give us this good earth, but we fail to share your bounty with all of your children. May the God of love and power forgive you and free you from your sins, heal and strengthen you by his Spirit, and raise you to new life in Christ our Lord. Go outside church Almighty God, whose will it is that the earth and the sea should bear fruit in due season: bless the labours of those who work on land and sea, grant us a good harvest and the grace always to rejoice in your fatherly care; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Psalm 23 The LORD is my shepherd; I have everything I need. He lets me rest in fields of green grass 3

and leads me to quiet pools of fresh water. He gives me new strength. He guides me in the right paths, as he has promised. Even if I go through the deepest darkness, I will not be afraid, LORD, for you are with me. Your shepherd's rod and staff protect me. You prepare a banquet for me, where all my enemies can see me; you welcome me as an honoured guest and fill my cup to the brim. I know that your goodness and love will be with me all my life; and your house will be my home as long as I live. Begin the walk, reflect on water We ask you to hear us, good Lord, for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. The Lord's Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. John 7:37-39 may be read Almighty God, we thank you for the gift of water to sustain, refresh and cleanse all life. May we who have an abundance of water see it as a precious and scarce resource. Help us to be mindful how much is consumed so that we can live in the way that we do: guide us to use it sparingly, and keep us mindful of those who suffer through drought, pollution and flood. We ask this for the sake of him through whom all things were made, your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. 4 Collect Almighty God We praise you for the wonders of your creation. We thank you for the beauty of the world and the vast resources of our planet: beauty that at times we fail to respect; resources that we wantonly exploit. You have entrusted us with the care of your world: Give us wisdom and compassion, and move us to change our thoughts and our actions, that we and all your people may value the whole of your creation, 9

l Upon human labour send a blessing, O Lord. Prosper the work of our hands; may all find dignity and just reward in their work; free the exploited and oppressed. Upon the produce of the earth send a blessing, O Lord. Guide into a sustainable future, and give us the will to share the fruits of the world. Upon the seas and waters send a blessing, O Lord. Teach us to cherish the water of the earth, and to conserve the seas, lakes and rivers. Upon aid agencies send a blessing, O Lord. Where the earth is parched and the well has run dry; where war brings want, and children go hungry; where the poor cry out for bread and for justice, give hands to care and heal, and compel us to be generous. 8 Near the crops or a garden Mark 4:26-29 may be read Almighty God, whose will it is that the earth and sea should bear fruit in due season, bless the labours of all those who work on land and sea. Grant us a good harvest and the grace always to rejoice in your care. Lord you have ordered our life that we are dependent on one another prosper those engaged in commerce direct our minds and hands in the service of you and all with whom we live and work. Grant O Lord that whatever gifts we have, they may be used to the full, for the enrichment of our lives together and for the coming of your kingdom. We pray in the name of Jesus, the good shepherd. Celebrate the wonders of creation Psalm 50:1-2, 10-11 The Almighty God, the LORD, speaks; he calls to the whole earth from east to west. God shines from Zion, the city perfect in its beauty. All the animals in the forest are mine and the cattle on thousands of hills. 5

All the wild birds are mine and all living things in the fields. Creator God, Jesus teaches us through the beauty and abundance of creation to put our trust in you for all things. We ask you now to bless our fields and gardens our hills and streams our rivers, lakes, reservoirs and seas that in all these things we might glimpse a reflection of your glory and your gracious love for each one of us. Bless, O Lord, the houses and farms and all the homes in this place. Give us good health, purity of spirit, strength and humility, hospitality, a spirit of forgiveness and firm knowledge of our need to seek you in all things. We pray in the name of Jesus, creative Word of God. For the community At The Village Green or other suitable place John 15.1-9 may be read God our father, we give thanks for the gift of your son, our Lord Jesus Christ, who was content to share the life of his village in Nazareth. We ask you to bless the life of this village/ town/community and this parish. We pray for all who live in this place, for all who work here, for 6 all who regard this place as home (wherever they may now live) and for all who simply pass through. May your blessing rest upon us all as we live together in your peace. We pray in the name of Jesus our peace. At a waste bin or at some litter Back into church Intercessions Lord, in all that we do we generate waste; we are profligate in the way we consume energy; we throw away food without thought and we create great mountains of rubbish. Help us both as individuals and communities to value your creation, not to treat the treasure you have entrusted to us casually or as a thing that can ever be replaced, but teach us to make better use of your gifts and save us from squandering the world s resources, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Let us ask the God of creation to send a blessing upon us. Upon the rich earth send a blessing, O Lord. Let the earth be fruitful and its resources be hallowed. 7
