S T. A N D R E W U N I T E D M E T H O D I S T C H U R C H Volume 16 Issue 10 October 2016 As I m sitting here today, my mind is racing forward to the Advent and Christmas season. Sometimes I find myself looking ahead only to miss the present. I think of the old saying, stop and smell the roses. It carries a great message, and if I do say so myself, I ve adapted it quite well for this season. Try this one on for size: Stop and Smell the Pumpkins. Have you noticed how popular pumpkin flavoring and scents have become? It used to be that we carved a pumpkin to make our Halloween Jack-O-Lanterns and had pumpkin pie at Thanksgiving. A psalm of David. The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Psalm 19:1. There s no doubt about it this is one of the most beautiful seasons that touches all of our senses. The leaves are starting to fall, and before we know it magnificent colors will be sweeping across the horizon. There s something about the air this time of year that is especially crisp and refreshing. The night sky has seemed particularly brilliant, providing a dramatic backdrop for the constellations, stars, and moon. I could easily fall into the trap of looking ahead and miss out completely on these expressions of God s good creation. Today pumpkin flavorings and scents are everywhere. I d venture a guess that it s easily become a multimillion-dollar industry. There s pumpkin flavored coffee, muffins, milkshakes, candles, air fresheners, potpourri, hand soap, hand lotion, bagels, bread, coffee creamer, cheesecake, and more. I think I ve seen just about every major restaurant advertising their pumpkin flavored... I invite you to slow down, and at times, Stop and Smell the Pumpkins. I want to share a verse from the 19 th Psalm with you, A psalm of David. The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Psalm 19:1. Every new day is a gift from God, filled with opportunity and possibility. May God bless you as we move through these autumn days. Stop and Smell the Pumpkins! Good or God? by John Bevere Reviewed by Pat Reynolds In the subtitle of this book, John Bevere poses the question, Why good without God isn t enough. This is an important question throughout the book which can be read cover to cover or probably more appropriately, slowly and with thoughtful study. Discussion questions and devotions at the back of the book are helpful in guiding the reader. Bevere explains the purpose of his book at the very beginning:...to illuminate, through the Scriptures and the help of the Holy Spirit, the difference between what is good for your life and what will ultimately be detrimental. He goes on to give this example: If Eve, who was perfect and living in a flawless environment, could still be deceived, how much easier is it for those of us with imperfect minds and living in a corrupted world...be deceived into judging what is damaging to be good? Many questions, thoughts and worldly topics are covered in Bevere s book. As a minister and founder of Messenger International, he delivers to the reader/ student an abundance of bold and passionate truth found in the Gospel. For more information, contact Debbie Caudill: 426-6491. Youth Group St. Andrew Youth are off and running! They had a great kick-off with some crazy Minute-to-Win-It games. If you happened to drive by and wondered about teens with kleenex boxes strapped to their behinds or cookies stuck to their faces or batting balls at waist-level with a clipboard---that was the youth group earnestly competing in ten activities all accomplished in one minute's time each. The competition was fierce. The team of Sarah Smith and her guest, Granite, took home the championship that day. Also in September, nine youth group bowlers dominated the lanes at Pla-Mor. A fun time, including pizza, was had by all. The youth also have spirited discussions and activities in Sunday school and youth group meeting nights. Many, many thanks to the parents, teachers and adult volunteers who lead this wonderful group of teens. COMING UP: Please note the October calendar in this issue of Footprints for some crazy, fun youth events you do not want to miss! #cornmaze United Methodist Women 2016 Annual Gathering On Saturday, 22 October 2016, the Miami District s UMW Annual Meeting will be held in Xenia at the Faith Community UMC. Time is from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM with registration beginning at 9:00 AM. Cost is $12.00 which includes lunch. The deadline for registration is Monday, 10 October. The Reverend Dr. Richard Boone, a missionary from the General Board of Global Ministries will be speaking on the Horizon Prison Ministry. Registration forms are on the UMW bulletin board. Men s Prayer Breakfast On Tuesday, September 20th, St. Andrew hosted our first Men s Prayer Breakfast for this ministry year. Bob Steele led an inspiring devotion, and Pastor John prepared a scrumptious breakfast. It was a great time of fellowship, devotion and prayer. We will meet the third Tuesday of each month, with our next gathering on October 18 th at 6:30am. Mark the date on your calendar and plan on joining an inspirational and prayerful time together. Please note: all gatherings will be over by 7:30 am. The Well & Life Groups at St. Andrew We are excited to report that The Well and our Life Groups at St. Andrew are off to an incredible start. Wednesday, September 7 th kicked off the 16/17 season of The Well. There were 53 people who attended the first Fellowship Meal and enjoyed a menu from Olive Garden. Our Life Groups offer eight different opportunities for everyone from our infants and children through adults. We also have a Sunday Life Group and two Yoga classes on Saturday mornings. During the first week, 122 people participated in The Well and our Life Groups. None of this would be possible without the help of many willing servants who cook, clean, teach, and care for the logistics. We want to extend a special thanks and recognition to Mrs. Jeanne Hanseman, our Fellowship Meal Coordinator. Jeanne stepped up to serve in this central position and provides fantastic leadership and service. We believe that the Fellowship Meal is central to the overall Well experience. We are currently planning for Advent and several special Life Group opportunities during that time. Watch for more information coming soon. If you haven t visited The Well yet, now it the time. You ll find great fellowship, genuine relationships, and extraordinary food. Remember the Fellowship Meal is open to everyone. Join us! If you d like to join one of the Life Groups, you are always welcome. Reservations are required for the Fellowship Meal. They can be made by calling the church office, by email, or on sign-up sheets available at the church. Deadline for the meal is Monday at 10am. See you at The Well. The Theater What has happened to Room 110 downstairs at St. Andrew? For several years the Young Adults have been talking about the possibility of transforming the room into a Theater for the church. Just before the start of The Well, the transition of Room 110 from a classroom to a theater was made, thanks to Radu Burja, his brother David, and their friend Jason. The room s first official use was with a Life Group led by Marc Caudill on September 7 th. The room was made possible by repurposing many items throughout the church that were not currently being used. We now have theater-style seating and a large viewing screen. The theater is perfect for small groups that are utilizing video. It is also available to use for special screenings by groups within the church. Because of the complexity of the equipment, access is limited to the Theater, and training is required for anyone wanting to use the Theater through the church office. We do have a refreshment area available, with popcorn and other snacks. Our hope is that the room will become one of the most used in the church. Ideas for use include Family Movie Nights, Youth Movies, Special Seasonal Films combined with luncheons, and the use of Christian Discussion Guides that are available for many popular movies. St. Andrew UMC does maintain a special movie license connected with our CCLI License which allows us to legally show most films. We will never charge anyone to view a film. Anything that will be shown in the Theater must comply with the St. Andrew Media Policy as well as our Safe Sanctuary Policy. All scheduling is done through the church office. Welcome to the Theater! The St. Andrew Holiday Bazaar, as you probably know, is coming up on Saturday, November 12 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The ladies pictured have been busy making crafts during the year to benefit the mission work of St. Andrew through the upcoming bazaar. As you can see by the signs in the church and elsewhere, there are many different areas where members and supporters can help. Or join in by baking cookies, making fudge, or bringing in CDs, books, children s clothing, gently used toys, working in the kitchen area or clean out your basement for Attic Treasures. Show your support HELP make this year the most successful ever! St. Andrew will recognize All Saints Day on Sunday, November 6 by honoring those we have lost over this past year. Please email or call Laura in the church office before October 31 with the names of family members who have passed away this year so that they can be included in the reading of the names and lighting of the candles in their honor. Many thanks for all of the prayers, cards and visits over the past few weeks! I am so grateful for everyone's caring outreach during my eye surgery and recovery process. Lynn Moad We have a wonderful opportunity to join in fellowship with New Hope UMC (536 Xenia Avenue, Dayton) through dinner and worship on Sunday, 30 October 2016! We will carpool from St Andrew UMC at 4:30pm. The worship service is at 5:00pm and the dinner is at 6:00pm. How can you participate? There are several ways! First: You can pray for New Hope UMC and its congregation and for the St Andrew UMC members who will serve dinner and participate in worship. Second: You can donate to the dinner menu items either through delivery of the food items by noon on 30 October or through a cash donation. There will be sign-up sheets in the atrium beginning on 2 October highlighting the pulled pork dinner menu and the needed ingredients and their quantities. Third: You can come along and help serve the dinner - there are normally 100 individuals and families who are served and we will need St. Andrew UMC volunteers to help serve the meals. Youth are welcome to participate! Fourth: You can come and join in the New Hope UMC worship service and get to know the folks at New Hope UMC in a more personal way. Fifth: You can donate items to the New Hope UMC "free store." The "free store" was established so that neighborhood people could trade items that can be purchased with food stamps for items that can t be purchased with food stamps. The items that are needed include: laundry detergent, soap, cleaning products, paper towels, toilet paper, aftershave, acne products, baby lotion, baby wipes, body wash for men and women, cleaners (Mr. Clean, Ajax, etc.), denture creams and paste, deodorant, detergents, dish soap, diapers, lotions, sanitary pads, shampoo, conditioners, hair brushes, combs, shaving cream, razors, soap, toilet paper, toothpaste and toothbrushes. Please start collecting these items and drop them in the box that will be located in the church atrium throughout October. Final collection date will be noon on Sunday, 30 October. The donations we provided in July 2016 made a real difference to meeting the many needs of the many people who used the free store the evening we served dinner!
