SEPTEMBER 10, 2017 "A clean heart create for me, O God, and a steadfast spirit renew within me. Cast me not out from your presence, and your Holy Spirit take not from me." Psalm 51 Dear Parishioners and Friends, We will have a special second collection this weekend on behalf of a request made by Bishop Matano and all United States Catholic Bishops to assist the hurricane and flooding victims. All funds collected will be used for victim assistance. Thank you for your generosity. This past Wednesday morning at daily mass we prayed for the safety of all people who are facing hurricane emergencies and disasters. We also asked for God's continued blessing upon our young students as they started a new school year this past week. What an exciting first day of school it was for our students last Wednesday. At St. Rita School, JOY was everywhere! Did you know that we have a weekly "E-Newsletter"? This is a parish newsletter that is emailed to parishioners and friends each week. Inside is the Sunday Mass readings with reflections and meditations. Also included is the latest news and information about our parish and school, and details about upcoming events. If you would like to be included, please let the office know by e-mail (wstritap@dor.org) or go online to our Website (www.saintritawebster.org) and click the E-News tab. Don't forget to sign your child up for Faith Formation and Sacramental programs. Classes start next week. Please see the bulletin or call the office for more information. On Tuesday the Kindergarten through Fifth Grade students were able to stop into school for a Meet and Greet with their teachers and classmates. While catching up on each other s summer activities, the students set up their desks and organized their supplies. + Kindergarten students and their families had a special lunch of hotdogs and chips on Tuesday following their classroom Meet and Greet. This gave the students and their families a special way to bond and get to know one another while enjoying food and activities on the playground. + Wednesday morning the Principal, Ms. Wagner, greeted each bus full of students while faculty, staff, and parents watched as the students excitedly, and some a little nervously, joined their class for the first day of school. Balloons and banners waved above their teacher s head showing students where to go. + Thursday and Friday, the Prekindergarten students and families had their own special Meet and Greet. Mrs. Farmen and Mrs. McEneany JOYfully welcomed each student with open arms and open hearts. Pre-K4 students will begin school on Monday, while Pre-K3 students begin Tuesday morning. Can you guess the St. Rita s School Staff member? Last week s answer: Principal, Ms. Wagner... My favorite Saint is Mary, the Blessed Mother. My favorite sports to watch are football and hockey. From the Desk of Joe Kwiatkowski... Are you trying to instigate a ruckus? said nearly every teacher, supervisor or person who has ever known me. I would like to explain my philosophy and procedure on how I pick music for Mass. I believe first and foremost that music is to enhance the Liturgy and the overall experience of the Mass. I read and re-read the selections from the Lectionary for that particular weekend or Holy Day. If a phrase sticks out that I know is in a song, I will gravitate toward that song. For example: the week of September 24, the 1st reading from Isaiah begins Seek the Lord while he may be found. That is exactly how the song Seek the Lord begins. If phrases don t stick out to me, I will look at overall themes and will reference Today s Liturgy which is a periodical put out by Oregon Catholic Press (OCP). They give dozens of weekly hymn suggestions. I couple their suggestions with songs with direct correlations to the readings. I also try to appreciate the sense of familiarity with the desire to grow musically with new items for the musical repertoire. I dig the traditional; however, I also dig trying new songs. I will never, EVER just do only new songs. That s not healthy. You ll hate it and you d let me know. Please know that when there are new songs introduced it is never from a place of me saying, You know what the parishioners would really hate? It is ALWAYS from a place of me thinking that this a piece that is a.) liturgically enhancing and appropriate and, b.) musically not cringe worthy. This was the case on August 27th with Sing of the Lord s Goodness. As Father Gonyo has said to me, You ve done this before. You ll know if you re crossing a line. I won t cross the line. If something truly doesn t work, I will know even without you telling me. And some of you will still tell me. And that s ok. Thank you for being open to a new person with a new approach. I once again reiterate: I am not trying to instigate a ruckus. Bless your hearts, Joe K. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * FIRST RECONCILIATION ~ PARENT MEETING Wednesday, September 27 at 6:30pm in Church Parents of children who are enrolled in this program need to attend this parent meeting. You may register online at www.saintritawebster.org. If you have any questions, please contact Anita Wagner at 671-2079 or anita.wagner@dor.org SINGERS WANTED! Please consider joining one of our music groups if you enjoy singing and have some basic skills. Well, basic music skills. (If you re good with nunchucks that might not correlate to our liturgical needs but is still pretty cool) The Contemporary Choir sings weekly on Saturdays at 5:00pm. This Mass has guitars and is generally upbeat. Rehearsals are at 4:00pm before Mass. The 7:30am Mass is usually choir-less but that doesn t mean I wouldn t rule out a choir! The 9:00am Mass has a Lite Choir that sings on the second Sunday of the month. The rehearsal is at 7:00pm the Tuesday before. Once a month. Although it s been women singers in the past, this group is open to everyone! The 10:30am Adult Choir meets every Wednesday at 7:00pm. This group also does a post-communion anthem. This is open to all voices. I tend to try and have the making of music be fun so if you have any interest please give singing a shot. You can e-mail me at Joseph.Kwiatkowski@dor.org or approach me after Mass so we can set up a time to talk about our different groups, what group you might like to participate in the best, and if you can teach me how to use nunchucks. I hope to be hearing from some of you, especially you good-voiced, nunchuck aficionados. ANNUAL MEN S RETREAT Friday, September 29 Sunday October 1 At the Notre Dame Retreat House overlooking Canandaigua Lake The theme for these retreats is God is talking... Are you listening? Is it difficult to carve out time to prayer each day? Is life too busy? Come away for a weekend with the Lord where we will give you time to explore the meaning of prayer; different styles of prayer and ways to overcome obstacles and enrich prayer time. Our retreat this year will challenge us to move from saying prayers to living a prayerful life. Pray.. Listen.. Join us!! For reservations or more information please call Jim Lajoie at 236-5716 or Nancy at the Notre Dame 585-394-5700 www.notredameretreat.org * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Mount Irenaeus Men's Retreat October 8-10 A few openings remain! For those who are not familiar with "The Mountain", it is a Franciscan Mountain Retreat House affiliated with St. Bonaventure University. Hosted by a wonderful group of Franciscan Friars who live at The Mountain. It is located outside of Olean, NY about a 2 hour drive from Webster. Their website is www.mounti.com. The format is very relaxed and is designed for a lot of quiet, contemplative time for yourself or with others in the group. We typically arrive by 6:00pm Sunday evening for dinner and Evening Prayer. Monday starts with breakfast, followed by Morning Prayer. The day is pretty open from there. There are plenty of hiking trails and places to spend time in restful thought with our Lord, our companion and our friend- perhaps some quiet time in conversation with our God will be refreshing. We meet again for lunch and again for dinner. Monday evening we will have Mass followed by confession for those who desire. We end the retreat Tuesday morning with breakfast and Morning Prayer. We are usually on the road about 9:00 or 9:30 Tuesday morning. There is limited space accommodating about 12-15 people on this retreat. We have room for 2-3 more individuals, so please check your schedules and confirm with me if you are able to attend. I will block space on a first come, first serve basis. They do request a goodwill offering for the stay. Whatever you feel is appropriate or feel moved to contribute is fine. They have envelopes in each room and last year, if I recall, the suggested amount was $60 per night. But, please, I don't want money to be a factor here. If you are moved to go, we can work it out! If you have any questions, please email me at James.Fien@dor.org or call me at 585-233-0334 Peace, Deacon Jim LADIES ~ PLEASE JOIN US! You are invited to join Women Enjoying Rediscovering Our Catholicism this Fall as we share, grow, and learn through connection and prayer to deepen our faith! A Travel Guide to Life outlines the path that can lead each and every one of us to renewed faith, understanding and fulfillment. St. Rita Parish invites you to an ALL NEW Bible Study Program Starting SOON! All WPCC Parishioners Are Welcome! The Epistle of St. James: PEARLS OF WISDOM Choose which session you would like to attend: Monday morning, Wednesday evening or Thursday evening You can Mix and Match any of the sessions in the same week This fall, we will be offering a study of the Epistle of St. James, a series by noted author and speaker Jeff Cavins. He shares: James is one of the most practical books of the Bible. Like the book of Proverbs, it is a book of wisdom, a collection of teachings on issues faced by ordinary Christians in everyday life. These teachings speak loudly to all those who feel torn between the competing demands of this world and their faith. This study offers "pearls for wise living" by applying the wisdom of James to the present day. For anyone who has struggled to live a truly Christian life, James offers a wealth of practical solutions for handling and even sanctifying everyday circumstances.
