VOX POPULI: THE DEBATING PHENOMENON SURAT 2016-17 OVERVIEW India is a democracy and Freedom of Speech is an integral part of this system. From daily issues to philosophical issues, we constantly battle in our lives to decide what is right. The two facets of a coin are equally important and only because of the presence of both the facets, we have a proper coin. Debating makes us take a stand between the right and what we think to be right. Debates of varied types are held in a unique form, a form that is of India, by Indians and for the world. Bringing about the objectives of Make in India in the field of education will enhance the intellect of the country and we are here to enhance the intellect of the young minds of the nation. The program aims to reach every Indian debater and every prospective Indian debater. We are committed to a vision, a vision of bringing a change, a vision of making India debate, a vision of giving back to the society, what it has lost. ABOUT US Vision leads to change, change leads to difference, difference leads to progress and progress in my eyes is success. With such a vision and a passion, the foundation of this organization was laid. The Founder and President of the organization, Mr. Shreyansh Bhalotia is a currently a third year student at Vellore Institute of Technology. He has attended over 100 Debates and MUNs and takes keen interest in training and educating young minds. With a team of over 150 young enthusiasts from across the country, the organization today seems to be just an inch distant from the realization of its purpose. Spells Event Management Page 1

VOX POPULI: THE JOURNEY What started as a vision has now turned into a reality. We had taken a decision, a decision to partner with the best and deliver the best. We started with the city of Kanpur and hosted a beta edition there in April 2015. We found out the issues that were hindering the progress of debating and we hosted the first mega city level edition. Once again, the city that we chose was Kanpur and with Seth Anandram Jaipuria School as our hosts, we delivered the largest city level debating event of India. We did not stop there and decided to move forward. The next step was a state level edition and with Maharani Gayatri Devi Girls School as our hosts, we delivered India s largest debating event. Luminaries like HH Rani Vidya Devi, Dr. Arun Chaturvedi, Minister for Social Welfare and Justice, Govt. of Rajasthan, Group Captain Mr. T.P. Walia, Colonel B.S. Maavi and noted industrialists graced the phenomenon with their august presence. To continue on our path to progress, we hosted our next state level edition and with La Martiniere Girls College, Lucknow as hosts, we delivered the largest debating event of UP & Uttarakhand. Once again, the phenomenon was graced by luminaries. Smt Sutapa Sanyal, DG, UP Police, Retd. Justice Vishnu Sahai, Prof. Kirti Narain, Dr. Rooprekha Verma, Mr. Rakshit Tandon, Prof. Nishi Pandey and Sri Rajshekhar, Hon. DM, were present along with noted people from the education and business community. The buck didn t stop there and we went on to host our first zonal edition at Chandigarh and with Dikshant International as hosts, it was one of the largest debating events of the zone. With Ramjas School as hosts, we delivered the largest Debating events of Delhi NCR. Luminaries like Dr. Kiran Bedi, Mr. Anant Mishra and Wing Commander Mahapatra graced the occasion with their presence. We then moved to a place that people frown to visit but we took a chance and The Phenomenon was graced by the people of Jammu and Kashmir. With the best school of the region, Jodhamal Public School as our hosts and luminaries like Dr. Spells Event Management Page 2

Chand Trehan, Col K.D. Kaushal, Prof. Pankaj Srivastava, Mrs. and Mr. Pawan Kumar Bhalotia, among others, it became the largest and the best debating event of Jammu and Kashmir. Continuing on this path, we traveled to yet another place people hesitate to visit, Assam and with Miles Bronson Residential School as hosts, we hosted the largest debating event of the zone. To add to the grandeur of the event, The Phenomenon was graced by famous Talk Show host, Mr. Wasbir Hussain and Prof. Dhurba Saikia, Vice Chancellor, Cotton College State University. We did not stop there. We covered the lake city of Udaipur then, followed by which was a royal edition at the Gateway to South India, Namma Chennai. The journey is now on to come to your part of the world and we are ready. Are you? Spells Event Management Page 3

ABOUT THE DEBATES Middle School (Grades 6-8) Basic Debate (The Rising Intelligentsia) We often wish to express our opinions but do not get a forum to. We often have voices but do not have the stage to open up. This two round debate will make delegates open up and present to the world, their voice, their opinion and will let them convince people with their viewpoint. This is a team event and each team should have 2 participants. Just a Minute (Mesmerize the Moment) Every minute of life is a challenge. JAM is a challenge that has been designed to make one realize the importance of the minute. Individuals will engage in speaking on a topic impromptu for this two round debate. Environmental (The Responsibility) Human being is a social animal. Social work paves way for a better society and environment beautifies the society. With the view of doing our bit, The Responsibility will be a two round debate where students come in teams of two and have a verbal battle for a cause. National Debate (Solve India) India will progress only if Indians progress. Take the first step to progress. Lead India and solve the problems of the country. Each team will have two participants and will witness two rounds of verbal battle on an issue of national importance. Spells Event Management Page 4

Press (Journalism & Photojournalism) Constructive Journalism has taken a backend today and advertisements have taken over the media. Come, exercise your freedom of expression and report the right proceedings of Vox Populi: The Debating Phenomenon. High School (Grades 9-12) Basic Debate (The Rising Intelligentsia) We often wish to express our opinions but do not get a forum to. We often have voices but do not have the stage to open up. This three round debate, with teams of 3 people, will make you open up and present to the world, your voice, your opinion and will let you convince people. This platform will give you an opportunity to shape people s opinions and influence them. And in the end, it hones and brings out the best of your oratory skills, which is the need of the day. Bilingual Turncoat (Opinion Shastra) Dual nature of a person, dual accounting, dual policies, we do that all. We have the pros coming to our minds when we need to speak the cons and vice versa. A turncoat does just the same. We have beautified this idea of turncoat and twisted it to make it a bit more interesting. So, a person will have to speak for the motion in English and has the choice of speaking the against part in Hindi or the regional language. The against part cannot be spoken in English. In the second round, also the final one, the rule becomes vice versa. Historic Debate (Ancient Times) Past shapes our views. We are dependent on the past for our future. We often learn from history. Let s recreate history. Let s change the course of history to pave way for a better future. We are giving people a chance to live in that era and discuss the issues related to it. Each team will have two participants and will witness two rounds of recreated history. Spells Event Management Page 5

Unconventional Debate (Deliver the Difference) Conventional and traditional debates have been a part of our daily lives. The debates happening other than this one too are conventional. Unconventional debates make you go beyond conventions and have an agenda which involves supernatural thinking. Each team will have two participants and will witness two rounds of verbal battle on an unconventional/hypothetical situation. Press (Journalism, Photojournalism & Videojournalism) Constructive Journalism has taken a backend today and advertisements have taken over the media. Come, exercise your freedom of expression and report the right proceedings of Vox Populi: The Debating Phenomenon. Do what you do best and learn more about reporting the proceedings of a conference. Youth Parliament (Our Problems, Our Solutions) Knesset, Majlis and Sansad, none of them have the youth as a part of it. One of the reasons is that they haven t understood the importance of youth. In this youth parliament, bring out the importance of youth and make the parliaments of the world realise the importance of the representation of the youth. Make a team of three and come and solve the problems of the Indian youth. Declamation (Ideology Matters) Nehru made a speech, Lincoln made a speech, Jinnah made a speech, bring out the leader in you and voice yourself. Who knows, the Martin Luther King or the Narendra Modi inside you might be trying to come out? This declamation, not just declaim but understand yourself and declaim for your own self. Your style, when mixed with that of Dhirubhai Ambani or that of Bill Gates, might become the next ideal declamation speech. Declaim your opinions in this two round event. Spells Event Management Page 6

International Issue Debate (Unite for the world) The world today has become globalized but at the same time, the world today is in a state of suffering. May it be Syria, Ukraine, Tibet or Kenya, the world is full of problems. Solve a world problem and we promise to take it up at an international forum. Make a team of 2 and come and solve the problems of the world. Financial Symposium (Idea War) If you know how to play with statistics, shape the GDP, bring down inflation or for that matter of fact, reduce the expenses of the world, this is your chance. Bring out the Manmohan Singh and the Kaushik Basu within you. Let the Raghuram Rajan inside you come up and show the world what it has been ignoring and be the one to take the world economy to a new level. Bring in your proposition in teams of 4. Each team should choose a product, make a marketing strategy, have a banker support, political support and bureaucratic clearance. Teams of 4 which will include a CEO, banker, politician and a bureaucrat, will defend the proposition and the best socially motivated idea will be turned into a reality. About the Host Institution: The Fountainhead School dreams of revolutionizing the Indian Education System. Undoubtedly, there is an enormous gap between the kind of education that is Spells Event Management Page 7

possible & desirable; and the type of education that is currently available in India. Fountainhead aims to bring the sheer joy of learning back to the classroom with its innovative schooling system. This dream began with the opening of Fountainhead Preschool in Surat in April 05, which started with six students and today it has more than 315 students and is growing every year. The preschool has already made a mark in the city as a provider of high-quality innovative education. And now the dream is flourishing with the beginning of Fountainhead School in Kunkni, Surat, which now has 1600+ students from Nursery to Grade 12. In the spirit of delivering the best conferences, we have made it a point to partner with the best institutions of our host cities. Being one of the best schools of the city, the school becomes an ideal host for Vox Populi: The Debating Phenomenon. With a belief of bringing about a well deserved change and a vision of nurturing young minds in their formative years, the school has set a standard by itself. We are proud to have them as our hosts for Vox Populi: The Debating Phenomenon.
