It is a Holy Day. We will have a 5:30 pm Vigil Mass on Halloween (All Hallows Eve), October 31 st. This Mass fulfills your Holy Day Obligation. On November 1 st itself we will have Masses at 8:45 am (Parish), 10:15am (School Mass) and then 5:30 pm (Parish). Any of these four Masses fulfill your obligation. Remember to check other parishes in the Green Bay area for times that may be more convenient for your particular schedule or if you are looking for a change in scenery. This is a beautiful Holy Day reminding us that our true home and lasting peace is not found here but rather with God. Allow yourself to be consoled by the truths of this great Holy Day. This week also holds November 2 nd, the Feast of All Souls. It is the day we set aside to pray for everyone (not canonized saints) who has passed on. If All Saints Day is where we ask the Saints in heaven to pray for us, All Soul s Day is different. We pray for those souls who are saved but still making their way into the fullness of eternal life. They are the ones being purified as St. Paul says, as through fire (1 Corinthians 3). It is God s gift of his final purification of love as we pass into the fullness of Heaven. Our prayers, through our Baptism and thus our supernatural connection in Christ, truly help the faithful departed. We pray for all the departed because we really have no certainty of anyone s final destination until we ourselves make it to the other side. The dead benefit from our prayers. Even a Hail Mary offered in piety and love is a gift to our departed loved ones. I think of the Ave sung about in the Irish song Oh Danny Boy. Especially remember in your prayers the families of our parishioners who have lost loved ones this past year. On other notes, as I mentioned last week, The Holy Father, Pope Francis, began his teaching on the corporal works of mercy this past Wednesday. I hope to give them brief mention here as he works through them. The first corporal work of mercy is feed the hungry (Matthew 25). Pope Francis taught that people should go further than only donating money to charities but also urged them to be charitable every day especially when they are physically confronted with poverty. We are called to be "merciful like the Father each day. The Pope s words stand as an invitation to examine our heart and gut reaction when bumping into those in need or when persons reach out to us. Our response is to be in the concrete situations of our lives. The Holy Father highlighted the truth of Catholic Social Teaching and stated that access to food and water is a basic human right. He noted that so many members of our human family, especially children, continue to suffer from hunger and thirst. The pope noted that Saint James warns against ignoring the practical needs of our brothers and sisters, for faith without works is dead (James 2:14-17). In the miracle of the loaves and fishes, the Pope commented that Jesus told his disciples to provide food for the crowds, yet he shows them that, in sharing what they have, he will give it increase. In the end the Pope said that Jesus himself is the bread of life, the food for which we all ultimately yearn. Jesus makes it clear that our relationship with the Father is intimately tied to the way we respond to the hunger and thirst of our brothers and sisters. Fr. Mark Vander Steeg

Faithful Citizenship Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship: A Catholic Call to Political Responsibility from the Catholic Bishops of the United States (2015), discusses the moral dimensions of public policies and the responsibility that all Catholics share to form their consciences in light of their faith. As the Catholic bishops of Wisconsin, we urge you to exercise your fundamental right to vote, but equally important, become actively engaged in the life of your community. Bring to bear all the wisdom and experience that Catholic social teaching and our faith have to offer. Ask yourself and those who govern our nation, Does this social program, economic plan, or public policy respect the dignity of the person, created in the image and likeness of God? Does it further the common good? The questions in the opposite column are intended to help guide you in your efforts to make moral and prudential decisions about candidates and public policies. To obtain more information on Catholic social teaching, public policy issues, and ideas for engaging Faithful Citizenship, please contact the Wisconsin Catholic Conference (608-257-0004) or Green Bay Diocesan Department of Living Justice: 920-272-8291 Wisconsin Catholic Conference Where does the candidate stand on: Protecting human life from conception to natural death?
