Lesson 38: I Can Be Reverent Lesson 38: I Can Be Reverent, Primary 1: I Am a Child of God, (2000), 125 28

Purpose To encourage each child to show love for Heavenly Father and Jesus by being reverent.

Attention Activity I want you all to fold your arms and sit quietly while we sing the words to Reverently, Quietly in a soft voice.

Reverently, Quietly Rev'rently, quietly, lovingly we think of thee; Rev'rently, quietly, softly sing our melody. Rev'rently, quietly, humbly now we pray, Let thy Holy Spirit dwell in our hearts today. Words and music: Clara W. McMaster, 1904-1997. (c) 1959 IRI.

I want to thank all of you for sitting so reverently and quietly as we sang that song.

Where are these children?

What are they doing?

What do you think they are thinking about?

How do you act when you come to Primary?

When we come to church we should act in a certain way. This is called being reverent.

REVERENT

REVERENT Let s try saying this word together.

REVERENT What do you think it means to be reverent?

REVERENT Being reverent means doing things that show our love and respect for Heavenly Father and Jesus.

REVERENT We can show our love for them in the following ways:

REVERENT Walking quietly and talking softly.

REVERENT Sitting quietly and listening to prayers and lessons.

REVERENT Raising our hands when we want to say something.

REVERENT Folding our arms.

REVERENT Keeping the meetinghouse clean.

REVERENT When we do these things, Heavenly Father and Jesus know that we love them and that we are happy to be at church.

REVERENT Let s sing the song I want to be reverent together

I Want to Be Reverent I want to be rev'rent, To show my love for thee. I will quietly listen, For rev'rence begins with me. Words: Primary Committee. (c) 1973 IRI Music: Vanja Y. Watkins, b. 1938. (c) 1973 IRI

REVERENT When we are reverent, we can listen to our teachers and learn about Heavenly Father and Jesus.

REVERENT When we are reverent, we help others to be reverent also.

What building are we in now?

Whose house is this?

The meetinghouse belongs to Heavenly Father and Jesus.

It is a place where we come to learn about them and what they want us to do.

Let s try performing a finger play. Do the same actions as I do.

The Meetinghouse These are the walls of a house so fine; This is the steeple so tall. These are the windows that let in the light And the doors that swing open to all. This house was built by loving hands As a place to sing and pray. Let us fold our arms, bow our heads (fold arms and bow heads), And give thanks for this house today.

What are some of the things you should do in the meetinghouse?

What are some of the things you should not do in the meetinghouse?

There are places and times in the meetinghouse for running and playing games,

but in most of the building and on Sundays we should be reverent.

Besides sitting quietly in Primary and in the chapel, we walk and talk quietly in the halls.

Listen to my story about the children in my class coming to Primary.

Let s sing the song Two Happy Feet As we sing, I want you to walk around the room quietly and carefully so you do not make any noise (except for singing)

Two Happy Feet I have two happy little feet To take me where I go. They hop me and they skip me, And make a noise, I know. But in my Heav'nly Father's house So softly do they fall That, though I walk, you cannot hear My little feet at all. Words: Norma Madsen Thomas, 1908-1988 Music: Barbara Boyer Obray, b. 1927

What do you do with your feet in the halls at church?

What do you do with your feet in the chapel?

What do you do with your feet in class?

What do you do with your hands?

What do you do with your voice?

I love knowing that Jesus Christ Loves us.

The feelings that I have when I think of Jesus are reverent feelings.

Would anyone else like to share their feelings about Jesus?

Let s listen to a story about Moses, a prophet that lived a long time ago.

Go to the Video Go to the Narrated Slides Continue

Moses must have had a most reverent feeling when the Lord spoke to him out of the burning bush and called him to lead the children of Israel out of Egypt

Let s read from the bible about something Moses did when he saw the burning bush.

Let s read in the Old Testament in Exodus 3 verse 5, it reads: 5 And he said, Draw not nigh hither: put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground.

Why did Moses take off his shoes?

This was a way of being reverent.

We do not have to take our shoes off to be reverent.

How can you be reverent?

Tell the children that the meetinghouse is not the only place where we should be reverent.

What do you do at home when someone is praying?

What do you do at home during family home evening?

When we listen quietly during prayers and lessons at home, we are also being reverent.

This shows Heavenly Father and Jesus that we love them.

TESTIMONY I want to express my love for Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ and I am grateful that I can shouw this love by being reverent. I want to encourage you to show your love for Heavenly Father and Jesus by being reverent in Primary, in sacrament meeting, and during prayers and family home evening at home.
