1416 Broad River Road, Columbia, SC 29210 All Saints Sunday November 5, 2017 8:30 a.m and 11:00 a.m. The Evangelical Lutheran Worship (ELW) is the red worship book found in your pew racks. Service music, indicated with a page number, can be found in the front portion of the book. Hymns, indicated by number, are found in the back portion of the book. Congregational responses are printed in bold type. b GATHERING b PRELUDE CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and the sin that clings so closely. Let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith. Amen Lord of all, Silence for reflection and self-examination. the demands of your righteousness are too hard for us to fulfill alone, so we rush off with this excuse and ignore your law. You forgive our iniquity and remember our sin no more, so we abuse this freedom as if it were a license to selfishness, self-indulgence and self-righteousness. You give us the gift of grace yet we make it cheap without serious repentance. We are your people, but do we know you as our God? Forgive us, Lord, the sins we know in our hearts. Save us, Lord, from the sins we hide And write your mercy on our hearts. We remain kneeling as the pastor offers God s absolution and forgiveness. Following absolution we stand for the hymn, facing the processional cross as we begin.

GATHERING SONG: For All Your Saints, O Lord (ELW Hymn 427) The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. PRAYER OF THE DAY Almighty God, you have knit your people together in one communion in the mystical body of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Grant us grace to follow your blessed saints in lives of faith and commitment, and to know the inexpressible joys you have prepared for those who love you, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. We sit b WORD b CHILDREN S SERMON (11:00 a.m.) FIRST READING: REVELATION 7:9-17 9After this I looked, and there was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, robed in white, with palm branches in their hands. 10 They cried out in a loud voice, saying, Salvation belongs to our God who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb! 11 And all the angels stood around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, 12 singing, Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen. 13Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, Who are these, robed in white, and where have they come from? 14 I said to him, Sir, you are the one that knows. Then he said to me, These are they who have come out of the great ordeal; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. 15 For this reason they are before the throne of God, and worship him day and night within his temple, and the one who is seated on the throne will shelter them. 16 They will hunger no more, and thirst no more; the sun will not strike them, nor any scorching heat; 17 for the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of the water of life, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

PSALM 34: The following refrain will be sung first by the cantor and then by the congregation each time thereafter. The congregation is also invited to sing the verses printed in bold type. 1 I will bless the Lord at all times; the praise of God shall ever be in my mouth. 2 I will glory in the Lord; let the lowly hear and rejoice. Refrain 3Proclaim with me the greatness of the Lord; let us exalt God s name together. 4 I sought the Lord, who answered me and delivered me from all my terrors. 5Look upon the Lord and be radiant, and let not your faces be ashamed. 6 I called in my affliction, and the Lord heard me and saved me from all my troubles. Refrain 7The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear the Lord and de- livers them. 8Taste and see that the Lord is good; happy are they who take ref- uge in God! Fear the Lord, you saints of the Lord, for those who fear the Lord lack nothing. 10The lions are in want and suffer hunger, but those who seek the Lord lack nothing that is good. 22O Lord, you redeem the life of your servants, and those who put their trust in you will not be punished. Refrain SECOND READING: 1 JOHN 3:1-3 1See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and that is what we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 2 Beloved, we are God s children now; what we will be has not yet been revealed. What we do know is this: when he\ is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him as he is. 3 And all who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure.. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

We stand, facing the processional cross at the center aisle for the reading of the Gospel. GOSPEL PROCESSION: Holy God, We Praise Your Name (ELW Hymn 414) We sing stanzas 1 and 2. The Holy Gospel according to Matthew. Glory to you, O Lord. GOSPEL: MATTHEW 5:1-12 1When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. 2 Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying: 3 Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. 5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. 6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. 7 Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. 8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. 9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. 10 Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11 Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. GOSPEL PROCESSION: Holy God, We Praise Your Name (ELW Hymn 414) We sing stanzas 3 and 4. We sit. SERMON We stand and sing. HYMN OF THE DAY: Shall We Gather at the River (ELW Hymn 423) NICENE CREED: Please turn to the back inside cover of your hymnal. PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION Each intercession will end with Lord in your mercy, to which we respond: Hear our prayer. b MEAL b PEACE The peace of the Lord be with you always. And also with you. We greet one another with a gesture of peace using these or similar words: Peace be with you. We sit. OFFERTORY ANTHEM (8:30 a.m.) Shall We Gather at the River (arr. Callahan) (11:00 a.m.) Each Winter as the Year Grows Older (arr. Hobby)

OFFERTORY HYMN THE GREAT THANKSGIVING (ELW page 129) THE LORD S PRAYER (ELW page 134) We sit.

LAMB OF GOD HOLY COMMUNION All are welcome to commune. Communion will be received at the altar rail by intinction; we receive the consecrated bread and dip it into the chalice. Those unable to partake of wine or wheaten bread are assured that the Church affirms our Lord s presence in, with, and under each element alone. Gluten free wafers are available. Please let the Pastor or Lay Assistant know of your need. COMMUNION HYMN: The following refrain will be sung by the assembly; the verses will be sung by the ensemble.

COMMUNION HYMN: Blest Are They (ELW Hymn 728) We stand. POST-COMMUNION BLESSING AND PRAYER PROCESSION TO THE FONT CANTOR: O Son of God, into whose death and life we are baptized, save us all and let us never sing: We join the cantor in singing: Hear us, O merciful Father, as we remember in love those members of this community who have gone before us in the faith of your Son, Jesus Christ. For the life of Ursula Lamatsch, For the life of Elizabeth Dickie Derrick, For the life of Helen Richardson, For the life of Lorene Fulmer, For the life of Alice Thompson, For the life of Sherman Hinson, For the life of Claude Metts, For the life of Mildred Slice, For the life of Susan Waites, For all who have died in the faith of Christ, We praise and bless you, O holy Trinity. You have taught your church that it is an ageless communion of saints. We thank you for gathering those who faithfully waited in hope for

the redemption you promised, and now for adding us who celebrate the love of your Christ for the redemption of the world. Prepare a place for us among those who are already with you. Help us remember them as an encouragement to saintly living, exciting us to love, in anticipation of an eternal reunion. Christ says, Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; For I am gentle and humble in heart, And you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. And you will find rest for your souls. HYMN: Into Paradise May the Angels Lead You (ELW Hymn 222) The following will be sung first by the cantor, and then by the congregation. BENEDICTION Please remain seated in silence for a few moments of prayer and meditation before departing.

Annual Congregational Meeting Notice The Annual Meeting will take place on Sunday, November 12, at 10:45 a.m. in the sanctuary. The congregation will be asked to approve amendments to the constitution that were adopted by the 2016 church-wide assembly. The primary amendment changes relate to the merging of the three lay rosters into a roster of Ministers of Word and Service and the renaming of ordained clergy as Ministers of Word and Sacrament. Other amendments address duties of rostered ministers, descriptions of membership categories, and required provisions when a congregation unites with another parish. Copies of the amendments will be found on the narthex table. For comparison, copies of the previous constitution will be available upon request. We will also vote on the 2018 Ministry Plan, the proposed construction of a handicapped-accessible bathroom and the Congregational Council nominees. Details are in the November newsletter. You Are Being Challenged!! And your gifts will be matched!! DON T MISS THIS OPPORTUNITY! An anonymous couple in the church has pledged to match up to $10,000 as an extra gift to the church for every EXTRA GIFT that people give before the end of the year to Current and Benevolence. This is a great opportunity for you to help make up our present deficit. It will have to be done on a system of trust that your gifts are over and above what you usually give, or expected to give. Simply write on your check 2017 Challenge Gift. There will also be envelopes available in the narthex or you may also give electronically. If you give electronically, please email Sharon Berger at sberger@salutheran.com who will make sure it is recorded as such.

The memorials and honorariums will be published in the Christmas Eve bulletin. If paying by check, please make it out to St. Andrew s Lutheran Church. Please do not include it with your regular offering check. The poinsettias cost $11.00. Place orders in the offering plate or turn in to the church office.
