Saturday s Kitchen thanks everyone who helped stuff, stamp, and address envelopes for our Christmas in July campaign. We also thank everyone who helped solicit funds on multiple occasions at our Galleria Mall Love Tree location. That tree yielded $3,733.72. We are gracious to everyone who contributed to our Christmas in July Love tree in our Cathedral parish which yielded $956.00. Through your kindness and generosity, thousands of people are helped in our cities. A most heartfelt thank you to everyone. We pray that God will bless you! With much love and heart-felt thanks. Joan and Ron Bost and the entire Saturday s Kitchen Board LIVES OF THE SAINTS The Holy Martyr Laurentios (Lawrence) of Rome August 10/23 Laurentios was one of seven archdeacons under Pope Sixtus II in Rome in the third century. His charge was to oversee efforts to help the poor. He was effective and respected by those he helped as well as those who donated. During this time, Emperor Valerian instituted another Christian persecution and began by martyring Pope Sixtus. When Laurentios was ordered to bring the Christian wealth he had gathered to the emperor, he brought to the palace all the sick and poor Christians he could find. Enraged, the emperor sent the crowd away and promised unheard tortures for Laurentios. He was grilled alive over a fire without making a sound. Laurentios asked his torturers to turn him over since his one side was broiled enough. Through the grace of God, he felt no pain. His last words to the emperor and his entourage were that he was done enough and it was time to eat. He prayed for Rome to turn from idol worship and gave up his spirit. His martyrdom brought many to the faith. He is depicted in icons with Saint Stephen the First Martyr. O Holy Martyr Lawrence pray to God that our pagan society may return to the true faith! QUOTES FROM THE HOLY FATHERS God rests in holy places; that is in the Theotokos and all the Saints. These are they who have become likenesses of God as far as it is possible, since they have chosen to cooperate with divine election. Therefore, God dwells in them. - St. John of Damascus It was fitting that she, who had kept her virginity intact in child-birth, should keep her own body free from all corruption even after death. It is fitting that she, who had carried the Creator as a child at her breast, should dwell in the divine tabernacles. It was fitting that the spouse, whom the Father had taken to Himself, should live in the divine mansions. It is fitting that she, who had seen her Son upon the Cross and who had thereby received into her heart the sword of sorrow which she had escaped when giving birth to Him, should look upon Him as He sits with the Father. It was fitting that God s Mother should possess what belongs to her Son, and that she should be honored by every creature as the mother and as the handmaid of God. St. John of Damascus Come, let us wonder at the virgin most pure, wondrous in herself, unique in creation, she gave birth, yet knew no man; her pure soul with wonder was filled, daily her mind gave praise in joy at the two-fold wonder; her virginity preserved, her child most dear. Blessed is He who shone forth from her! St. Ephraim the Syrian
