Grand Knights Comments My Brother Knights, Brother Knights, wishing you and your families the best of everything for the New Year. After our joyful season of Advent, the joy of celebrating the birth of our Lord with our families and religious activities, I invite you to reaffirm your commitment to the charitable works and objectives of our Council and Order for a New Year 2017. At the half way point of our fraternal year, progress towards achieving the goals established for our council stand at 3 of 15 in membership and -2 of 5 in new insurance members, so we have work to do in this two key areas. Do your part to help our organization continue to grow and share some of your time and talents with other brother knights so that our council can continue its good works. Get involved to the degree that you can in our activities and events within our key programs of Church, Family, Council, Community, Youth, and Culture of life. Your Brother in Christ, Ervey Martinez Que Viva Christo Rey! Knights Chaplain's Message Brother Knights: As we move to the beginning of a new year, I want to again mention my appreciation for your service to the KofC and your particular and generous gift of your time and ability in our parish community. I have served in a number of parishes, three as parochial vicar and three as pastor, and ours is the strongest and most active Council I have experienced. Father Jerry and I are most grateful for your Christmas gifts to us, and particularly grateful for your work in decorating the exterior of the church for the holidays. Father Jerry and I are grateful to your service in so many areas, and we pray that God will richly bless you for your commitment. Fr. JANUARY 2017 CALENDAR EVENTS EVENTS: Prayer to Mary Queen of the Knights Our Lady, Queen of the Knights, bless all the activities of our order. Keep us true to the pledge to extend the kingship of thy Divine Son on earth. Through Thine intercession, win for us the grace ever to exemplify in our public and private lives, the virtues, which should characterize those specially dedicated to the service of the heavenly court. Make us always aware that as your Knights we are constantly observed, our faith judged and our order appreciated. The Blood Mobile will be in front of to the Parish Hall from 8:30 a.m. till 12:30 p.m. Donors will be treated to breakfast courtesy of the Council. So how important is your donation? Did you know that 1 in 7 people entering a hospital need blood? Blood may be needed by trauma patients, organ transplant and other surgery patients, as well as individuals with cancer or other disorders. Our council has been a faithful supporter of this need for many years, hosting blood drives every other month, for the benefit of members, families, and any parishioner of Our Lady of Mount Carmel who might be in need of blood? Our successful blood donations have ranged from 14 to 17 (equivalent to 42 to 51 lives saved, respectively), but it could be more with additional emphasis and care on our part. Our thanks to the dedicated donors who support this Knights of Columbus and Our Lady of Mount Carmel program. If you have not participated before, make it your New Year s resolution to start now. JANUARY 2017 CALENDAR EVENTS EVENTS: KNIGHT IN A DAY (Sat. 28th) St. Paul the Apostle in Flour Bluff will be hosting a Major Degree Ceremony. If you would like to attend please let one of your council officers know so that they can get you all required information and paper work required ready for you! AN INVITATION TO CONTRIBUTE TO FATHER MARK S ANNUITY Our Chaplain Msgr. Mark Chamberlin has been an insured member in the Knights of Columbus since 2006, when, with initial sponsorship and contribution from our/his council, he established an annuity to add to his retirement portfolio. Twice a year, in January and July, Council 6413 provides Father Mark funds to add to the annuity. At these two times of the year, we also publicize that the annuity can receive additional contributions from any interested member, parishioner, or organization as a show of solidarity, appreciation, and financial support for our priest. For information on how to contribute, please contact our Parish Secretary at 643-7533. 2016 COUNCIL CHRISTMAS PARTY A SUCCESS!!!!! Our 2016 Christmas Party, which was held on Thursday, December 8th, was enjoyed by all in attendance. Headcount was 87 (brother Knights, spouses, children, widows of our departed brothers.). The party consisted of good food courtesy of the council, fellowship, singing Christmas carols, and just visiting as a social aspect of the Advent season and anticipation of the joy of the Christmas season and the birth of our Lord. Drawings were held throughout and numerous winners received $25 gift cards to eating establishments. If you did not attend, you missed a good celebration. UPCOMING EVENTS: PLANNING AHEAD FOR VALENTINE S DAY (Sat. Feb. 11) Valentine s Day this year is Sunday, February 14. In lieu, to be determined during our January meetings, we will probably celebrate Saturday evening, February 13th (as our Ladies Night Out celebration), by either arranging an outing to a restaurant or holding a party at our Parish Hall. Mark your calendars as this is a way to treat our spouses in a group of our own, share fellowship among friends, and stay longer. Page 4

JANUARY KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS The Knights closed out the year with a great family CHRISTmas party for its members and families! The night was full of caroling (and some lip-syncing), prizes, games, lots of food, family and friends enjoying the evening. Many thanks to AKA Santa Beto Martinez who did an awesome job hosting the games and prizes. As the New Year begins, let us pray, that it will be a year with new peace, new happiness, and abundance of new friends, God bless you through out the New Year. Great job in 2016 brother Knights. CHRISTmas is not over yet! Many of us, myself included, are fond of the slogan "Let's keep Christ in Christmas." But how many of us do so until Christmas is fully complete. If you have already taken down your Christmas tree and ornaments, chances are you have cut Christmas short. The Liturgical Calendar of the Catholic Church indicates that Christmas is not over until January 11. When we are awaiting the birth of a child or grandchild we do not suddenly lose interest the minute it is born. No, we continue with our joy and cannot get enough of the newborn. We go on for weeks wanting to carry him, kiss her, toss him up in the air and make goofy faces and sounds for her. The joy seems to never end at least until they reach the terrible twos or worse yet become teenagers. And even then, the love does not stop it never does. So it must be with the birth of our Savior. We must continue to carry his cross, give him our loving kisses, raise our arms in exaltation to him and yes, from time to time, it is okay to share our silliness with him. I'm certain Jesus has a good sense of humor. He too never stops loving us, to love us is why he made us. As we go about our busy daily lives, the Church reminds us of the coming of Christ's birth by providing four weeks for Advent in the Church Liturgical Calendar. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops reminds us that "The Advent season is a time of preparation that directs our hearts and minds to Christ's second coming at the end of time and also to the anniversary of the Lord's birth on Christmas." The Church provides us devotions, such as Advent wreaths and calendars, to help in our preparation. The Church also provides us with direction on how to continue our celebration after Christ's birth, beginning at the Vigil Mass on Christmas Eve through the Baptism of the Lord on Jan. 11. The Octave of Christmas, the eight days after Christmas, ends today, Jan. 1, with the solemnity of Mary, Mother of God. This day also honors the holy Name of Jesus. In the United States, Jan. 1 is a Holy Day of Obligation. Besides attending Mass, the family may want to gather at the dinner table, the Christmas tree or the manger scene and offer a prayer for the coming New Year. The Christmas season-especially The Epiphany of the Lord that usually is on Jan. 6 but this year will be celebrated on Sunday, Jan. 4-is the traditional time for blessing of homes. During the Mass of the Epiphany it is customary to announce the dates of movable feasts for the coming year and it is a time when the Church blesses and distributes calendars. The Epiphany conveys that Jesus is the Messiah and Savior of the world, as indicated by the call of the wise men who came to pay homage to Jesus. During the week after The Epiphany, the Gospels tell the story of Jesus' childhood and other appearances of the Lord. The Sunday after Jan. 6 is the feast of the Baptism of the Lord and end of the Christmas season. As we can see, we still have another 10 days to celebrate the joyous coming of the Lord. Take this time to continue to merrily celebrate and reflect on the joy of the Gospel. Turn away from the stress imposed on the holidays by our material culture and rest in the love Jesus. Alfredo Cardenas-STC Page 6

Since our founding in 1882, the primary mission of the Knights of Columbus has been to protect families from the financial ruin caused by the death of the breadwinner. In the beginning, Venerable Father Michael J. McGivney and his fellow Knights passed the hat to benefit widows and orphans. From that humble start, the Order has grown to include top-rated life insurance, long-term care insurance and retirement products. With more than $99 billion of insurance in force and a full-time field force of more than 1,400 serving our members and their families, we are proudly fulfilling Fr. McGivney s vision. The best way to learn about our products is by arranging a visit with a local field agent. Your agent can custom design an insurance program to meet your current needs, help you plan for the future or simply explain the many fraternal benefits that come with membership. Our insurance representative is: Kevin Cosby KofC Field Agent (361)790-6696 kevin.cosby@kofc.org Our Guarantees Set Us Apart Knights of Columbus life insurance offers something precious few other financial products can guarantees. As long as you pay your premiums, the policy proceeds will be there for your beneficiaries should something happen to you. That s peace of mind, and that s what we offer with every product in our portfolio. We guarantee the cash value in your whole life policies will be there. We guarantee the rates on your term insurance. We guarantee our retirement products will provide a stream of income when you need it. On top of those product guarantees, I guarantee that I will offer professional, high-quality service that you would expect from our organization. Our Order is among the highest rated life insurers in North America. AM Best has rated the Knights of Columbus A++, Superior for 39 consecutive years. It s a testament to our track record for excellence and security. I would suggest that a principal reason that we were able to achieve those accolades is because we remain steadfastly committed to the vision of Venerable Father Michael J. McGivney by providing life insurance by brother Knights for brother Knights. That commitment is an essential core value of the Knights of Columbus, and our core values permeate all levels of our organization. We pledge to serve our brother Knights, and their families, according to our Golden Rule: In all my professional relationships, I pledge myself to the following rule of conduct: I shall, in light of all conditions surrounding those I serve, render that service which, under the same circumstances, I would apply to myself. Let s talk soon to discuss how our products can bring that peace of mind to you and your family. The Knights of Columbus Insurance program operates solely for members and their families, relies on council-agent teamwork for its success, and provides the financial backbone for all of the Order s good works.
