J ANUARY 2014 Knights Line Dear Brother Knights and Families: VIVAT JESUS! 2014 is here! Taking down the Christmas decorations and hitting the treadmill to work off those extra holiday pounds! The council had a lot of events during the holiday season, and the list of thank you s seems longer than Santa s list of good girls and boys. First of all, thanks to everyone who worked at our recent Texas Hold Em event. The funds are being put to good use. Thanks also to PGK Joe Gomez for the Fall MI event/motown Review which allowed us to provide Parents Who Care/Macomb County and St. Francis Camp on the Lake with much needed funding in December. Thank you to all who helped with the December events: PGK/DGK Tom Podeszwik & Trudy, PGK Pete Wilhelm & Sandy, Brother John Zelmanski, Brother Earl Kay, Brother Scott Solak & Didi, PGK Vito Faraci, Brother Andy Kalson & Kris, PGK Gerry Wilczynski, Brother Norm Johnson, Brother John Gardner, Brother Joe Surmont, Brother Kris Jones, Brother Bill Shoemaker, Brother Pete & Mary Ann Ashbaugh, PGK Russ Kreinbring & Paula, Brother Tom Mudry, Audrey Oleski, the First Degree Team, the Building Board, my wonderful wife Joni, and everyone else who had a hand in these events. Your help through all of this was priceless! A BIG thank you to the Fourth Degree for their very generous gift to the Council! We are so blessed to be associated with such a charitable Assembly. Your help is most appreciated! It would be a nice gesture of gratitude if a few of our Council members would consider volunteering at the Fourth Degree Texas Hold Em in February. And thank you to the DofI for all of your help throughout the year. You are all living examples of Faith, Grace, and Charity! Lastly, thanks to all of our members and families who participated in the parties, fundraisers, donations, and events. It is great to see everyone making good things happen together. For the New Year, I wish you all good health and much happiness. Pope Francis (TIME Magazine s Person of the Year ) recently said: If we can realize that everything is God s gift, how happy will our hearts be! Everything is His gift. He is our strength! Let us ponder these words of the Holy Father this New Year, and be guided by his faith and wisdom throughout 2014! Fraternally, Grand Knight, Ken Warzybok

THIS IS MY BODY (22nd in a series) In Aninon, Spain around the year 1300, a fire totally destroyed the church of Our Lady of Castille. Everything was destroyed in the church, even the tabernacle that held consecrated Hosts. However in searching through the ruins, five bleeding Hosts were found and a sixth Host was stuck to the pall. The miracle was later approved in 1613 by the Vicar General and the anniversary of the miracle is still celebrated. PLAN FOR THIS TAX DAY AND INTO THE FUTURE April 15 (tax day) is right around the corner. It s become popular this time of year to encourage the opening of an IRA or similar retirement annuity, or the depositing of additional funds into an existing account, as a taxsavings vehicle. A secondary approach is to tout the rate of interest that money in one of these accounts can earn. Let me join the chorus of folks encouraging you to open or add funds to an annuity, but for a different reason. Certainly, contributing money to a Knights of Columbus annuity will allow you to save some money on your income tax return. And our annuities do pay a very competitive interest rate, consistent with our primary goal of absolute safety of principal. Opening or adding to an annuity for these reasons, however, strikes me as taking a short-term view of a product that is designed to provide long-term security. How much security? How does retirement income that you cannot outlive guaranteed sound to you? Here at the Knights of Columbus, you can open a retirement annuity for as little as $300. Consistent and disciplined savings placed into that annuity over time can guarantee you an income at retirement that you cannot outlive. That guarantee along with the fact that no one has ever lost money left in a Knights of Columbus annuity (remember absolute safety of principal) really will provide you with peace of mind. I am happy to meet with you at your convenience and in your home to explain in detail the benefits of opening a Knights of Columbus annuity, along with the benefits of our top-rated life insurance, disability income and long-term care insurance plans. HOLY FAMILY CIRCLE #981 DAUGHTERS OF ISABELLA It is beginning to look like Christmas. Decorations are going up. The weather has turned cold. The New Year will soon come. Let's hope there will be Peace on Earth. At our last meeting, we celebrated Christmas. Non-perishable cans of food and some toys were collected to be added to the baskets that the Knights of Columbus hand out at the Christmas holiday. The Circle also donated money towards the food baskets. We also handed Sister Mary Agnes of the Xavier Sisters, a check to help in her charitable work. We will not have a meeting in January, as the day falls on the first which is New Years Day. I would like to wish everyone a wonderful and healthy New Year. Sandra Mihalic, Regent RTL Update: Victory for Michigan Elective abortion removed as standard 'benefit' from health plans The question of who pays for abortion insurance was answered today in Michigan. The Michigan House (62-47) and Senate (27-11) approved the citizen-initiated Abortion Insurance Opt-Out Act. The Abortion Insurance Opt-Out Act is about who desires abortion coverage and who will pay for it, not whether abortion is legal or if insurance is available. Today's vote in the Michigan House and Senate in a victory for Michigan and concludes a narrative of effort by a cast of hundreds of thousands of volunteers and key leaders. Because of the dedication of many, Michigan joins 23 other states in opting-out of abortion coverage in their health insurance exchanges through the Affordable Care Act. Right to Life of Michigan President Barbara Listing said, "Abortion is not true health care and people who object will not have to contribute their own tax dollars or insurance premiums for elective abortions. This law is instrumental in preserving our long tradition of protecting the conscience rights of Michigan citizens before the Affordable Care Act takes full effect in 2014." Thank you Brother Knights for your support helped make this possible. (John Smith RTL Chairman) Knights Line Page 4
