S T. ANDREW S Lutheran Church 1416 Broad River Road, Columbia, SC 29210 Sixth Sunday of Easter May 6, 2018 8:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. The Evangelical Lutheran Worship (ELW) is the red worship book found in your pew racks. Service music, indicated with a page number, can be found in the front portion of the book. Hymns, indicated by number, are found in the back portion of the book. Congregational responses are printed in bold type. b GATHERING b PRELUDE: (8:30 a.m.) Jesu, Jesu, Fill Us With Your Love arr. Kevin McChesney (11:00 a.m.) Loving Spirit arr. Anne Krentz Organ CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen He is Risen. He is risen indeed. Christ is alive. He lives so that we too might dwell in newness of life. He lives to grant forgiveness and mercy to all. However, if we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he who is faithful and just will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Oh, God of the empty tomb: You have called us to honest confession and truth. Yet, we pretend that we are not in need of correction or repentance. We sometimes doubt that your mercy is enough to wash us and all people clean. Your first disciples shared generously with others, yet, we hold onto what you have given us out of fear and anxiety. You have called us to forgive others, but we hold onto animosity, anger, or resentment. We often love in word and speech, but fail in truth and in actions. Forgive us, Good Shepherd. Gather us into the arms of your mercy. We remain kneeling as the pastor offers God s absolution and forgiveness. Following absolution we stand for the hymn, facing the processional cross as we begin.

GATHERING SONG: I Want to Walk as a Child of the Light ELW Hymn 815 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. KYRIE ELW page 147 HYMN OF PRAISE: This is the Feast ELW page 149 PRAYER OF THE DAY The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. O God, you have prepared for those who love you joys beyond understanding. Pour into our hearts such love for you that, loving you above all things, we may obtain your promises, which exceed all we can desire; through Jesus Christ, your Son and our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. We sit. b WORD b CHILDREN S SERMON (11:00 a.m.) FIRST READING: ACTS 10:44-88 44 While Peter was still speaking, the Holy Spirit fell upon all who heard the word. 45The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astounded that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles, 46 for they heard them speaking in tongues and extolling God. Then Peter said, 47 Can anyone withhold the water for baptizing these people who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have? 48 So he ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they invited him to stay for several days. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

PSALM 98: The following refrain will be sung first by the cantor and then by the congregation each time thereafter. The congregation is also invited to sing the verses printed in bold type. 1 Sing a new song to the LORD, who has done marvelous things, whose right hand and holy arm have won the victory. 2O LORD, you have made known your victory, you have revealed your righteousness in the sight of the nations. 3You remember your steadfast love and faithfulness to the house of Israel; all the ends of the earth have seen the victory of our God. 4 Shout with joy to the LORD, all you lands; lift up your voice, re- joice, and sing. REFRAIN 5Sing to the LORD with the harp, with the harp and the voice of song. 6With trumpets and the sound of the horn shout with joy before the king, the LORD. 7Let the sea roar, and all that fills it, the world and those who dwell therein. 8Let the rivers clap their hands, and let the hills ring out with joy before the LORD, who comes to judge the earth. 9 The LORD will judge the world with righteousness and the peo- ples with equity. REFRAIN SECOND READING: 1 JOHN 5:1-6 1 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the parent loves the child. 2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. 3 For the love of God is this, that we obey his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome, 4 for whatever is born of God conquers the world. And this is the victory that conquers the world, our faith. 5 Who is it that conquers the world but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? 6This is the one who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ, not with the water only but with the water and the blood. And the Spirit is the one that testifies, for the Spirit is the truth. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. We stand.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION: Alleluia, Sing to Jesus ELW Hymn 392 The Holy Gospel according to John. Glory to you, O Lord. GOSPEL: JOHN 15:1-8 [Jesus said:] 9 As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my love. 10 If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father s commandments and abide in his love. 11 I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete. 12 This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13 No one has greater love than this, to lay down one s life for one s friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command you. 15 I do not call you servants any longer, because the servant does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father. 16 You did not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name. 17 I am giving you these commands so that you may love one another. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. SERMON We sit.
