The first of our Lent Talks has just been given, and the Cathedral has been stripped back to its more simple Lenten state, with excessive decoration and unnecessary elements cleared in order that, through this simplicity, we might take the opportunity to examine ourselves as Christians more closely. The music chosen for the season is reflective of this: the organ is used less, and this allows a wealth of unaccompanied music to be sung, such as Byrd s five-part mass on 4 March. Yes, the texts of our anthems are penitential, but by the time we reach Mothering Sunday on 11 March, the daffodils are in bloom. This is, after all, a season of hope and ultimately of joy. Our Easter musical offerings are exciting and elaborate, and on Easter Day the choir will sing works by Mozart, Stanford, Hugh Blair and Charles-Marie Widor; the organ voluntaries are triumphant marches by Elgar and Walton. Before we get there however, there are other musical and liturgical offerings. Passiontide begins on Sunday 18 March; the afternoon and evening before, Bach s great and colossal St Matthew Passion will have been performed in the Cathedral could there be a better way, musically, to enter into this period of reflection? On Palm Sunday we begin our journey through Holy Week, and each evening that week allows an opportunity to meditate: a Service of Reconciliation, a Tenebrae Service, The Crucifixion by John Stainer and finally, the Eucharist of the Last Supper and Watch of the Passion on Maundy Thursday. By the time of the Good Friday Devotion and Liturgy, the Cathedral has been stripped bare and the Nave is set aside for private prayer and contemplation during the day of Holy Saturday, before the Vigil Readings and Easter Liturgy lead us to that joyous morning. March/April 2018 SALISBURY CATHEDRAL 11

Music Scheme Events and Services featuring the Father Willis Organ On Wednesday 21 March at 2100, as part of the Cathedral s Lent Series, a service of Organ Compline in the Quire will feature Lenten chorale preludes by J. S. Bach, woven into the framework of the Compline service. Bach was a Church organist for most of his life; latterly he was Kantor at the Thomaskirche in Leipzig, holding this position for twenty seven years. He composed an enormous number of preludes on chorale melodies, which would have been performed liturgically in a similar way that hymn tunes may be incorporated into improvisations today. This service of Compline will feature some of the more meditative chorale preludes, with translations of their associated texts. Following the performance of Olivier Messiaen s La Nativité du Seigneur in a service of Organ Vespers back in January, there will be two further opportunities to hear organ music by this composer in acts of worship at the Cathedral. On Friday 20 April at 1730, Organ Vespers for Easter will feature Les Corps Glorieux, an organ cycle of seven movements completed by Messiaen in 1939. This is a rare opportunity to hear the cycle in its complete form, which explores disparate ideas concerning resurrection and eternal life. The service will have a distinctly different feel from that of the usual Evensong, but anyone curious about Messiaen s music is encouraged to attend this deeply meditative service, which will last just over an hour. On Wednesday 9 May at 2100, on the Eve of Ascension Day, a further service of Organ Compline will feature Messiaen s complete organ cycle L Ascension. The organist for these services is John Challenger. 12 January/February 2014 SALISBURY CATHEDRAL NEWS
