JULY 24, 2016 SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Pastors Message: In the Gospel this weekend Jesus not only gives the Apostles the Our Father, but also some sound advice on praying. Since we all pray (or at least should be!) this is advice we all need to hear. Jesus makes two crucial points we often forget: Persistence in prayer is important, and God always knows what is best for us, even if we don t know it ourselves. Jesus emphasizes the importance of persistence in prayer. The importance of praying, even when the prayer does not seem to be getting God s attention is challenging, but so important. St. Monica stands as a great example of this as she prayed for over thirty years for St. Augustine to convert to the Catholic faith. While she prayed many years for this intention, when it was granted God answered in a powerful way, Augustine not only became a Catholic Christian but a priest, bishop and great Doctor of the Church. I have often thought that St. Monica s many years of prayer helped produce Saint Augustine s powerful conversion and who he became for the Church. Jesus also reminds us that God as our loving Father always knows what is best for us even when it is not what we are asking for. We have all struggled with unanswered prayers, but are we open to see how in time maybe what we were praying for was not really what was best for us? Our faith is in a loving God so when we pray we need to trust that God answers all prayers, maybe not with what we are asking for at the time, but what is truly best for us in the long run. Please pray for all our faithful departed May they rest in peace with the Risen Lord Jesus.
