WE GATHER TO PRAISE Let us now prepare our hearts and minds to worship God. honduras alleluia Rev. Bob Brearley The liturgical colors of the Christian year are white, purple, red, and green. White is used for special days or seasons in the redemptive work of Jesus Christ, such as Christmas and Easter. White will remain our color in worship throughout the seven-week Easter season until the Day of Pentecost. Prelude *Call to Worship Easter Flourish Amy Bishop, Organist One: O sing to God a new song. *Prayer of Confession (All) Rev. Alan Dyer God of all worlds and all time, we gather voicing thanks for this season of resurrection. May our worship be as an Easter tide. Wash over us and seep into us to refresh and to cleanse. Dissolve the prejudices that cling to us like barnacles, the jealousies that lodge in crevices of memory. Move toward us with power and might when we are rockrigid in our views and when we are unforgiving as granite. Let us hear the thunderous sound of good news as it breaks upon our hardness of heart. And bid us, God, to dare to journey upon the sea of the Spirit. May the waves of an Easter tide buoy us up and beckon us to the adventure of resurrection living. We offer you our sins and our needs. The Christian life is an offering of one s self to God. In worship the people are presented with the costly self-offering of Jesus Christ, are claimed and set free by him, and are led to respond by offering to him their lives, their particular gifts and abilities, and their material goods. -The Book of Order Silence for Personal Confession In the name of Jesus Christ we pray. Amen. *Assurance of Pardon *Gloria Patri 581 h.w. greatorex Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
Offertory Draw Us to You Amy Bishop, Organist arr. Burkhardt Doxology, a Greek word meaning saying of glory, is a brief hymn of praise that follows another hymn or Psalm in our case the offertory. Doxologies appear in many Christian traditions and have their origin in the Jewish kaddish, which concludes each portion of the synagogue worship service. *Doxology 606 old hundredth Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. *Affirmation of Faith (All) *Hymn of Dedication WE GO FORTH TO SERVE 629 Jesus, the Very Thought of Thee A Declaration of Faith In the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus, God kept his promises. All that we can ever hope for was present in Christ. The hope God gives us is ultimate confidence that supports us when lesser hopes fail us. In Christ, God gives hope for a new heaven and earth, certainty of victory over death, and assurance of mercy and judgment beyond death. This hope gives us courage for the present struggle. In Christ, God gave us a glimpse of the new creation he has already begun and will surely finish. st. agnes The response to the proclamation of the Word is expressed in an affirmation of faith and commitment. A common affirmation may be offered by the congregation through singing a hymn or other appropriate musical response, or through saying or singing a creed of the church. An opportunity for personal response may also be provided during this time. -The Book of Order *Benediction Choral Response (589) Alleluia honduras alleluia Postlude Festive Praise Amy Bishop, Organist D. To Ponder Prayerfully Thomas Thomas said that unless Jesus came back again so he could not only see the nail marks for himself but actually touch them, he was afraid that, much as he hated to say so, he simply couldn t believe...eight days later, when Jesus did come back, Thomas was there and got his wish. All he could say was, My Lord and my God! It s hard to imagine that there s a believer anywhere who wouldn t have traded places with Thomas, given the chance, and seen that face and heard that voice and touched those ruined hands.
