BIBLE VERSE OF THE DAY úñí³ ²ëïáõ³Í³ßÝã³Ï³Ý ÀÝûñóí³Í Galatians 4:6-7 6 Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, Abba,[c] Father. 7 So you are no longer a slave, but God s child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir. TODAY S GOSPEL READING ²Ûëûñí³ ²í»ï³ñ³ÝÁ Luke 4:14-23 14 Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole countryside. 15 He was teaching in their synagogues, and everyone praised him. 16 He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. He stood up to read, 17 and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written: 18 The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, 19 to proclaim the year of the Lord s favor. [a] 20 Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him. 21 He began by saying to them, Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing. 22 All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his lips. Isn t this Joseph s son? they asked. 23 Jesus said to them, Surely you will quote this proverb to me: Physician, heal yourself! And you will tell me, Do here in your hometown what we have heard that you did in Capernaum. THE HOLY MARTYRS OF THE ARMENIAN GENOCIDE V. Rev. Fr. Daniel Vartabed Findikyan By decision of the synod of bishops of the Armenian Apostolic Church, under the auspices of His Holiness Karekin II Catholicos of All Armenians and His Holiness Aram I Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia, the countless martyrs of the Genocide of the Armenians will be formally recognized as martyrs and canonized as saints of the Armenian Church on April 23, 2015. The official declaration of canonization reads as follows: We, Karekin II, Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians and Aram I Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia, by the gracious power of the Holy Trinity given by the Lord Jesus Christ, and by the authority granted to the holy apostles of Armenia Thaddeus and Bartholomew, by the intercession of the Holy Mother of God and the second enlightener of the Armenians, St. Gregory the Illuminator, by decision of the synod of bishops and by the testimony of the Christian life of our people We will canonize the martyrs of the Armenian Genocide and we declare April 24 to be the Commemoration of the Holy Martyrs who gave their lives during the Genocide of the Armenians for faith and for the homeland. And now, Holy Martyrs, remembering you eternally, in prayerful supplication, we appeal to you: Receive our prayers and intercede for us so that we too, with fearless love, may also continually glorify the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Now and always and unto the ages of ages. Amen. For the first time in hundreds of years the Armenian Church will officially add saints to her register of holy men and women. The Church believes that, unlike the dead who are asleep until the second coming of Jesus Christ, the saints are alive, enjoying God s eternal presence in heaven. Faithful Christians look to the saints and martyrs with hope and joy because by the unshakable faith that they manifested during their earthly lives, they become witnesses to the truth of the Gospel and to the eternal promises Jesus Christ has made to those who follow him. After 100 years, the recognition by the Armenian Church, through our faith in the Cross of Jesus Christ, that a glimmer of divine light shines forth from that unforgettable atrocity marks a major turning point in the history of the Armenian Church, and the source of enormous hope and abundant blessings for her people. To Be Continued...

Feast of the Evangelists Sts. Mathew, Mark, Luke and John Evangelist St. Mathew is one of the twenty apostles of the Lord. He is the author of the first Gospel. The name of Matthew is the Greek version of the Hebrew name meaning God-given. His Hebrew name has been Levi. In the past he has been a tax collector in Capernaum. Then obeying to God s will he has sold his property, distributed the money to the poor and has become on the followers of Jesus Christ. He has preached the Word of God in Parthia and Palestine. Evangelist St. Mark was the nephew of Barnabas. He was born in Jerusalem. He was named also John. It was the house of his mother Mary that was the place of prayer for the apostles. It is supposed that it was the place where Our Lord Jesus Christ had the Last Supper and where the Church was founded during the Pentecost. He has been the interpreter of St Peter, as well as the friend of St. Paul and Barnabas. He is the author of the shortest Gospel. He has preached the Word of God in Egypt, where he has been martyred he is the founder of the Coptic Orthodox Church. Evangelist St. Luke is the author of the third Gospel. He was born in Antioch. According to the tradition he is one of the seventy-two disciples of Jesus Christ. According to St. Paul he has been a physician. Listening about the Lord s Preaching, Luke goes to Palestine and follows the Lord. He has preached the Word of God in Achaia, Libya, Egypt and Teba. He has written The Acts of the Apostles upon the request of Theophilos of Rome. According to the tradition he has been martyred in Teba. Evangelist St. John is the author of the fourth Gospel, three letters and the Revelation. He deserved the title of the beloved disciple of Christ. He was the son of the fisherman Zebedee and the brother of James. He is considered to be one of the two disciples of St. John the Baptist who followed Jesus (See Jn 1:37). Afterwards the Lord called him to Galilee and gave him the authority of apostle. John became one of the closest Disciples of Christ. Together with James and Peter he witnessed the transfiguration that came over Jesus while He was praying on a high mountain named Tabor, went to the valley of Gethsemane. Together with St. Mary, Holy Godmother, he stood near the cross and at the moment of crucifixion Jesus asked him to take care of the Holy Mother of God. Together with Peter he was the first who went to the tomb of Christ and later met Him near the Sea of Genneseret (or Sea of Galilee or Lake Kinneret or Lake Tiberias). Later we see him during the persecutions of Christians in Jerusalem and his success in preaching in Samaria. After the descent of the Holy Spirit John went to Asia Minor and settled down in Ephesus where he took care of the churches founded by Paul and wrote down the Gospel there. Roman Emperor Titus Flavius Domitianus (Domitian) exiled him to Patmos where he was given (and recorded) a vision from Jesus. In Patmos or Ephesus he wrote also his letters addressed to the faithful flock. During the period of reign of Roman Emperor Nero he returned to Ephesus where he passed away in 100 AD, in Ephesus, at the age of 95.

WORSHIP IN THE ARMENIAN CHURCH One of the central elements of being a Christian is the time we spend in worship of our Heavenly Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. The practice of worship is an essential element of our existence as humans and a part of our very being as creations of our Maker. Worship, both individual and communal, is incredibly pleasing to God and also helps to develop our relationship with Him. Every Church (not the building, but the gathering of committed Christians all over the world) has its own distinct style of worship that meets its particular cultural and spiritual needs. As an ancient Church, the Armenian people have been worshiping God in its own distinct way, practically unchanged for the last 1700 years, in the form of the Badarak. Though the pews, curtain, and elevated altar might make the Divine Liturgy (Badarak) appear as a performance for an audience to sit and watch, the Badarak can only serve as an effective worship experience if the individuals in the Church participate in heart, mind, body and soul. Particular to its own culture, Armenian worship involves all the senses. We worship not only in words, but also in gestures and rituals that help us to express what we believe about God and our relationship with Him. Whether it is the radiant priestly vestments, the sweet smell of smoking incense, the unique modes of our ancient hymns or the chinking of the altar vessels, the Badarak is experienced at numerous levels. Even the words in Armenian that are used to define worship, words like yergurbakotiun and bashdamoonk, show that we worship with humility, with reverence and awe, and with effort. To conclude, built into the Badarak is the unique Armenian expression of love and admiration of our Almighty God. Through the various elements of the Badarak, parishioners express both in words, thoughts and gestures, what we believe about God and our relationship with Him. It is a corporate form of worship, and it must involve each and every member of the community of Christ who has been blessed by His promises. In order to fully participate in our beautiful worship service, we need to learn our Badarak, love our Badarak and actively use our Badarak to nurture the most important relationship in our lives! The Bible tells us Ascribe to the Lord the glory due His name, Bring an offering and come before Him; Worship the Lord in the splendor of His holiness. 1 Chronicles16:29 October 7, 2015 2nd Hye Pointe - Sts.
