SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER My Lord and My God April 7 & 8, 2018 5:00pm & 8:00am AS WE GATHER Thomas is seldom remembered for anything other than his doubt. In our quest to find relatable biblical characters, we often leave Thomas as a man who needed evidence proof. We may miss his bold confession: My Lord and my God! While the other ten disciples had seen Jesus eight days earlier, none of them confessed as Thomas did. And none of them believed until Jesus appeared to them and spoke His Word to them. Focus today not on Thomas s doubt but rather on his confession of faith. WELCOME MINISTRY MOMENT - Crystal Barry VERSE "In your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect." (1 Peter 3:15, ESV) HANDSHAKES & HUGS PREPARATION OPENING HYMN #469 Christ the Lord Is Risen Today Christ the Lord is ris n today! Saints on earth and angels say; Raise your joys and triumphs high; Sing, ye heav ns, and earth, reply. Love s redeeming work is done, Fought the fight, the battle won; Lo! Our Sun s eclipse is o er; Lo! He sets in blood no more. Vain the stone, the watch, the seal; Christ hath burst the gates of hell. Death in vain forbids His rise; Christ has opened paradise. Lives again our glorious King! Where, O death, is now thy sting? Once He died our souls to save; Where thy victory, O grave? Soar we now where Christ has led; Foll wing our exalted Head. Made like Him, like Him we rise; Ours the cross, the grave, the skies. Hail the Lord of earth and heav n! Praise to Thee by both be giv n! Thee we greet triumphant now: Hail, the resurrection, Thou! 1 INVOCATION & OPENING SENTENCES Pastor: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Pastor: Alleluia! Christ is risen! People: He is risen indeed! Alleluia! Pastor: He brings us light People: that shines in our darkness. Pastor: He brings us life People: that death cannot overcome Pastor: God is light. People: In Him there is no darkness at all. Pastor: Alleluia! Christ is risen! People: He is risen indeed! Alleluia! CONFESSION & ABSOLUTION Pastor: In the Epistle, John writes, If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. Let us consider our sins so that we do not deceive ourselves with false righteousness. Heavenly Father, People: too often we have chosen darkness instead of light. Too often we have chosen a sinful path instead of the path of life. Forgive us. Let your light and life come to us again. Pastor: John also writes, If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Having heard your confession, and trusting in God s Word and promises, I announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in the stead and by the command of the risen Christ, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. We have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world. 2

HYMN OF PRAISE This Is the Feast Page 155 : This is the feast of victory for our God. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Worthy is Christ, the Lamb who was slain, whose blood set us free to be people of God. Power, riches, wisdom, and strength, and honor, blessing, and glory are His. Sing with all the people of God, and join in the hymn of all creation: Blessing, honor, glory, and might be to God and the Lamb forever. Amen. For the Lamb who was slain has begun His reign. Alleluia. This is the feast of victory for our God. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. SALUTATION & PRAYER OF THE DAY Pastor: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Pastor: Let us pray. Almighty God, you sent your Son to be our light and our life. Shine His light into our darkness, and comfort us with the hope of resurrection, that we may share His light and life throughout the world; through the same Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. WORD FIRST READING Acts 4:32 35 (Great unity filled the Early Church as the apostles gave testimony to the resurrection of Jesus.) Now the full number of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and no one said that any of the things that belonged to him was his own, but they had everything in common. And with great power the apostles were giving their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all. There was not a needy person among them, for as many as were owners of lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was sold and laid it at the apostles' feet, and it was distributed to each as any had need. 3 EPISTLE 1 John 1:1 2:2 (God has come near to us with His light and life.) That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we looked upon and have touched with our hands, concerning the word of life the life was made manifest, and we have seen it, and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was made manifest to us that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. And we are writing these things so that our joy may be complete. This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world. HOLY GOSPEL John 20:19 31 (Jesus appears to a troubled Thomas.) On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, Peace be with you. When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you. And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld. Now Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, We have seen the Lord. But he said to them, Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will never believe. Eight days later, his disciples were inside again, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, Peace be with you. Then he said to Thomas, Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe. Thomas answered him, My Lord and my God! Jesus said to him, Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed. Now Jesus did 4 continued

many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. CHILDREN S MESSAGE SERMON HYMN #411 I Want to Walk as a Child of the Light I want to walk as a child of the light. I want to follow Jesus. God set the stars to give light to the world. The star of my life is Jesus. In Him there is no darkness at all. The night and the day are both alike. The Lamb is the light of the city of God. Shine in my heart, Lord Jesus. I want to see the brightness of God. I want to look at Jesus. Clear Sun of Righteousness, shine on my path, And show me the way to the Father. In Him there is no darkness at all. The night and the day are both alike. The Lamb is the light of the city of God. Shine in my heart Lord Jesus. I m looking for the coming of Christ. I want to be with Jesus. When we have run with patience the race, We shall know the joy of Jesus. In Him there is no darkness at all. The night and the day are both alike. The Lamb is the light of the city of God. Shine in my heart, Lord Jesus SERMON The World of a Doubting Thomas John 20:19-31 CREEDAL HYMN #941 We Praise You and Acknowledge You, O God We praise You and acknowledge You, O God, to be the Lord, The Father everlasting, by all the earth adored. PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH Pastor: Let us pray for the whole Church of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs. Father of glory, remember your Church throughout the world and bless them to be strong in faith and living in love. People: As we live in a world of darkness and sin, strengthen all your people to be bold witnesses of our Lord s resurrection, that people may be delivered from doubts and hopelessness and brought to faith in Christ. Pastor: Fount of wisdom everlasting, look in kindness upon our Synod, bless our pastors, teachers, missionaries, and church workers so 6 that the kingdom of Christ may be built up.

People: Grant us unity of spirit as we work together, that all we undertake may be to your praise and glory. Pastor: Lord of the church, we rejoice in your gift of grace and give thanks for the extension of Christ s kingdom. As Rashad Nathaniel Robinson is baptized into Christ this weekend, grant him to grow daily in the knowledge of the Lord. People: Move us to love, encourage, support and build up the body of Christ in this place and everywhere. Pastor: Ruler of all, to your care and protection we commend all our elected officials and all who serve in our armed forces. Bless them, encourage them, and protect them. People: Grant them also wisdom and honor as they carry out their responsibilities. Pastor: Heavenly King, your Son promised that He does not break the bruised reed or quench the dimly burning wick. Lift up those who are struggling in life and carry them in your hands. People: Remember in mercy all who struggle with the darkness of doubt and despair, and bring to their hearts the peace of your Son s resurrection victory. Pastor: Forgiver of all our sin, you have given your Church the keys of the Kingdom. Grant joy to repentant sinners who turn from sin and find grace in Christ. Warn those who stand in unrepentance. People: Help all pastors to use the Keys faithfully, that the truth of Pastor: Christ may set your people free from sin and death. Gracious Lord, we give you thanks for the gift of life and rejoice with the Rauter family as they celebrate LeAnn s birthday. People: Grant us faith to see life as a precious gift from you and move us to show love and kindness to the people you have placed in our lives. Pastor: O Lord, our Healer, we commend to you all those who are in need of restoration, whether of body, soul or spirit especially remembering before you: RoseMarie, Bob, Tony, Nancy, Sue, Janet, Donna, Dolores, Pat, Cliff, Manley, Pat, Shirley, Gladys, Herb, Matthew, Russ, Arlene, Dorothy, John, Arlene, Jack, Shirley, Jonathan, Helen, Leonard, and Sarah. Grant to them your peace in Christ. People: Strengthen them that they may bear their sufferings with patience as they await your gracious healing. 7 Pastor: Lavish Giver of every good, your Son has set before His people a feast of love, a table where He serves us His own body and blood for the forgiveness of our sins. People: Grant that we may receive this gift in a worthy manner, that this holy supper may bring forth an abundance of good fruit for your Kingdom. Pastor: Everlasting One, we join with the Hinz family as they rejoice in the 10 th anniversary of Eunice s entrance into eternal life. Receive our thanks this day for all who have fallen asleep in faith in Jesus Christ. People: Bring us to share with them the joys of the feast that never ends. Pastor: Into your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in your mercy, through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. THE LORD S PRAYER SACRAMENT THE WORDS OF OUR LORD THE PEACE OF THE LORD Pastor: The peace of the Lord be with you always. AGNUS DEI Page 163 Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us. Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us. Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world; grant us peace. DISTRIBUTION Those guests who desire to commune who are members of another LCMS congregation may do so; if you are coming from another church background, please see the pastor or an elder first. 8 continued HYMN #484 Make Songs of Joy Make songs of joy to Christ, our head; Alleluia! He lives again who once was dead! Allelulia! Our life was purchased by His loss; Alleluia! He died our death upon the cross. Alleluia!

O death, where is your deadly sting? Alleluia! Assumed by our triumphant King! Alleluia! And where your victory, O grave, Alleluia! When one like Christ has come to save? Alleluia! Behold, the tyrants, one and all, Alleluia! Before our mighty Savior fall! Alleluia! For this be praised the Son who rose, Alleluia! The Father, and the Holy Ghost! Alleluia! HYMN #626 Come, Let Us Eat (Leader will be soloist/all will be congregation) Come, let us eat, for now the feast is spread, Come, let us eat, for now the feast is spread. Our Lord s body let us take together, Our Lord s body let us take together. Come, let us drink, for now the wine is poured, Come, let us drink, for now the wine is poured. Jesus blood poured let us drink together, Jesus blood poured let us drink together. In His presence now we meet and rest, In His presence now we meet and rest. In the presence of our Lord we gather, In the presence of our Lord we gather. Rise, then, to spread abroad God s mighty Word. Rise, then, to spread abroad God s mighty Word. Jesus risen will bring in the Kingdom. Jesus risen will bring in the Kingdom. HYMN #636 Soul, Adorn Yourself With Gladness Soul, adorn yourself with gladness, Leave the gloomy haunts of sadness, Come into the daylight s splendor, There with joy your praises render. Bless the One whose grace unbounded This amazing banquet founded; He, though heav nly, high, and holy, Deigns to dwell with you most lowly. Hasten as a bride to meet Him, And with loving rev rence greet Him. For with words of life immortal He is knocking at your portal. Open wide the gates before Him, Saying, as you there adore Him: Grant, Lord, that I now receive You, That I nevermore will leave You. He who craves a precious treasure Neither cost nor pain will measure; But the priceless gifts of heaven God to us has freely given. Though the wealth of earth were proffered, None could buy the gifts here offered: Christ s true body, for you riven, And His blood, for you once given. Now in faith I humbly ponder Over this surpassing wonder That the bread of life is boundless Though the souls it feeds are countless: With the choicest wine of heaven Christ s own blood to us is given. Oh, most glorious consolation, pledge and seal of my salvation! Jesus, source of lasting pleasure, Truest friend, and dearest treasure, Peace beyond all understanding, Joy into all life expanding: Humbly now, I bow before You; Love incarnate, I adore You Worthily let me receive You And, so forward, never leave You. Jesus, sun of life, my splendor, Jesus, friend of friends, most tender, Jesus, joy of my desiring, Fount of life, my soul inspiring: At Your feet I cry, my maker, Let me be a fit partaker Of this blessed food from heaven, For our good, Your glory, given. Lord, by love and mercy driven, You once left Your throne in heaven On the cross for me to languish And to die in bitter anguish, To forego all joy and gladness And to shed Your blood in sadness. By this blood redeemed and living, Lord, I praise You with thanksgiving. Jesus, bread of life, I pray You, Let me gladly here obey You. By Your love I am invited, Be Your love with love requited; By this Supper let me measure, Lord, how vast and deep love s treasure. Through the gift of grace You give me As Your guest in heav n receive me. COMMON DISMISSAL 9 continued 10

POST-COMMUNION THANKSGIVING Pastor: Gracious God, our heavenly Father, you have given us a foretaste of the feast to come in the Holy Supper of your Son s body and blood. Keep us firm in the true faith throughout our days of pilgrimage that, on the day of His coming, we may, together with all your saints, celebrate the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which has no end; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. BENEDICTION Pastor: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace. People: Amen CLOSING HYMN #466 Christ Has Arisen, Alleluia Christ has arisen, alleluia. Rejoice and praise Him, alleluia. For our Redeemer burst from the tomb, Even from death, dispelling its gloom. : Let us sing praise to Him with endless joy; Death s fearful sting He has come to destroy. Our sin forgiving, alleluia! Jesus is living, alleluia! For three long days the grave did its worst Until its strength by God was dispersed. He who gives life did death under go; And in its conquest His might did show. The angel said to them, Do not fear! You look for Jesus who is not here. See for yourselves the tomb is all bare; Only the grave cloths are lying there. Go spread the news: He s not in the grave; He has arisen this world to save. Jesus redeeming labors are done; Even the battle with sin is won. Christ has arisen; He sets us free; Alleluia, to Him praises be. Jesus is living! Let us all sing; He reigns triumphant, heavenly King. 11 Preacher Liturgist Lectors Acolytes Children s Message Organist Soloists Pastor Harold Bender Pastor Gregg Stanton Rachel Osell, Debra Nier Aubrey Kadolph, Ryann Gutknecht Laurel Privatt Michelle Prince Bev Baumgart, Bob Reynolds Creative Worship for the Lutheran Parish, Series B, Quarter 2. It is also a wonderful blessing to serve, as we grow to know that servanthood is simply part of being a Child of God. We will meet in the Fellowship Hall about 8:30a.m., leave for the rescue mission about 8:45a.m., and then serve in whatever way they ask us to serve. We should return to church about 11:15a.m. or so. If you need service hours, bring your sheets for pastor to sign. If your parent can also help drive, please let Pastor Bender know (217-779-7985)
