Retired Numbers 5 Kevin McCarn / Quarterback Quarterback Kevin McCarn, who started most of four seasons (1997-2000), became the most prolific passer in Arkansas college football history. An unrecruited walk-on from Mountain View, McCarn threw for 7,864 yards, breaking the previous record held by Clint Stoerner of the University of Arkansas. His record was surpassed by two quarterbacks in 2008, giving McCarn a third place all-time standing for the state of Arkansas. McCarn finished his UAM career with 7,993 yards total offense. His final passing numbers read: 563 completions in 1,056 attempts (.533) and 61 touchdowns. 11 David Cedro Anderson / Quarterback Quarterback David Cedro Anderson rewrote the school and conference record books for passing and total offense from 1948-51. Using a controlled passing game that was the brainchild of former NFL great Jim Benton, Anderson completed 508 of 700 passes during his career for an astounding 72.5 percent completion percentage. In 1950, he completed 78.4 percent of his passes. Both marks have never been challenged. He finished his career with 3,522 yards passing and 5,052 yards total offense, including 1,530 yards rushing. He is a member of the charter class of the UAM Sports Hall of Fame. 12 Joe Don Samples / Quarterback Quarterback Joe Don Samples of Huntsville broke many of Anderson s passing records in a playing career that covered 1982-85. Samples set records (since broken) for passing yards and had one of the greatest single-game performances in school history when he completed 33 of 44 passes for 465 yards and three touchdowns in a 36-21 win over Henderson State. Samples finished his career with 360 completions in 660 attempts for 4,963 yards. 14 Sean Rochelle / Quarterback Sean Rochelle is remembered by UAM fans as the quarterback of the most successful team in school history. In 1988, he led the Weevils to a 10-2 record, the only 10-win season in school history, and was named the AIC offensive player of the year as well as an Academic All-America honoree. Rochelle accounted for 4,615 total yards during his career, including 1,674 yards rushing, making him the most prolific running quarterback in school history at that time. He is currently eighth all-time at UAM in total offense, and owns the program s single-season record for scoring with 98 points in 1988. Following his playing days, Rochelle has gone on to have a distinguished career as a coach, athletic administrator and as executive director of the Razorback Foundation. 27 Bill McGowan / End The number 27 was worn by Bill McGowan, an All-AIC end in 1954 whose life was tragically cut short when he was killed in an automobile accident in 1955. McGowan was part of the first conference championship at UAM in any sport when he helped lead the Boll Weevils to the 1953 AIC title.
