As Christians, we are expected to make progress in our spiritual journey.
Psalms 92:12 (NIV) The righteous will flourish like a palm tree, they will grow like a cedar of Lebanon; Proverbs 4:18 (NIV) The path of the righteous is like the first gleam of dawn, shining ever brighter till the full light of day.
Ephesians 4:15 (NIV) speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ. 2 Peter 3:18 (NIV) But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Joshua 1:1-9 (NIV) After the death of Moses the servant of the Lord, the Lord said to Joshua son of Nun, Moses' aide: "Moses my servant is dead. Now then, you and all these people, get ready to cross the Jordan River into the land I am about to give to them--to the Israelites. I will give you every place where you set your foot, as I promised Moses. Your territory will extend from the desert to Lebanon, and from the great river, the Euphrates--all the Hittite country--to the Great Sea on the west.
No one will be able to stand up against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you. "Be strong and courageous, because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their forefathers to give them. Be strong and very courageous.
Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go."
1. ACCEPT GOD S CHALLENGE. After the death of Moses the servant of the Lord, the Lord said to Joshua son of Nun, Moses' aide: "Moses my servant is dead. Now then, you and all these people, get ready to cross the Jordan River into the land I am about to give to them--to the Israelites.
A. Trust God In `Untamed Situations. Joshua 3:15a (NIV) Now the Jordan is at flood stage all during harvest The Jordan River was at flood stage during this time of year.
Emergencies have always been necessary to progress. It was the darkness which produced the lamp. It was the fog that produced the compass. It was sickness that drove science to find a cure. And it was persecution that drove the early church to expand beyond Jerusalem. It was hardships that produced a battle-hardened Apostle Paul.
B. Trust God In `Unknown Territories.
Behold the turtle; he makes progress only when he sticks his neck out.
William Booth - British preacher - Founder of the Salvation Army, one of the world s largest Christian distributors of humanitarian aid. - In 2002, named among the 100 Greatest Britons in a BBC poll.
God must know best I have done what I could for God and the people with my eyes. Now I shall do what I can for God and the people without my eyes. William Booth
2. TRUST IN GOD'S COMMITMENT No one will be able to stand up against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you.
A. The Promise Of God s Powerful Presence No one will be able to stand up against you B. The Promise Of God s Personal Presence I will be with you C. The Promise Of God s Permanent Presence I will never leave you
Blessings come to those who has the presence of God with them.
Genesis 21:22 (NIV) At that time Abimelech and Phicol the commander of his forces said to Abraham, "God is with you in everything you do.
Judges 6:12,14 (NIV) (Gideon) "The Lord is with you, mighty warrior." "Go in the strength you have and save Israel out of Midian's hand. Am I not sending you?"
Jeremiah 15:20 (NIV) I will make you a wall to this people, a fortified wall of bronze; they will fight against you but will not overcome you, for I am with you to rescue and save you"
God is looking for people through whom He can do the impossible. What a pity that we plan only the things we can do by ourselves. A. W. Tozer
3. FOLLOW GOD'S COMMANDS "Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go."
A. Completely Be careful to obey ALL the law
We all want progress, but if you re on the wrong road, progress means doing an about-turn and walking back to the right road; in that case, the man who turns back soonest is the most progressive. C.S. Lewis
Adoniram Judson - American missionary who served in Burma for almost 40 years. - It took him 12 years to make his first 18 converts. - Translated the Bible to the Burmese language - By the time of his death, he left 100 churches, and over 8,000 believers in Burma.
My work is not here. God is calling me beyond the seas. To stay here, even to serve God in His ministry, I feel would be only partial obedience, and I could not be happy in that. Adoniram Judson
B. Consistently do not turn from it to the right or to the left
Billy Sunday - popular baseball player - influential American evangelist - Over the course of his career, preached to more than 1.25 million people faceto-face without electronic amplification.
3 simple rules: - Take 15 minutes each day to listen to God talking to you; - take 15 minutes each day to talk to God; - take 15 minutes each day to talk to others about God.
F22 RAPTOR - the king of fighter jets in the entire world - virtually invisible to radar - super maneuverability - advanced weapons systems - Max speed: Mach 2.25 or 2,410km/hr - But there is one thing that a jet pilot requires above all else: the aircraft must react completely to his control.
Even if we had all the gifting under the sun, God as the ultimate "pilot" of our lives, can only do amazing things with our lives if we are fully under His control.
To get to where God want us to be in 2017, let us FACE OUR CHALLENGES WITH THE PROMISED PRESENCE OF GOD AND DO AS GOD DIRECTED.
Our emphasis for 2017: FAITH. BE BOLD. BE COURAGEOUS. BE OBEDIENT.
