Their daughter, Carolyn George North, was an advocate for the United Daughters of the Confederacy, a local historian, and genealogist. The collection contains the records of the George General Merchandise Store. The collection also contains the papers of Carolyn George North. BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL NOTE John Thomas (b. 1854) and Florence Imogene George (1873-1957) owned and operated a general merchandise store in Tangipahoa, Louisiana. Their daughter, Carolyn George North (1896-1978), was an active writer, genealogist, and member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, Camp Moore Chapter where she held the position of treasurer. SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE The John Thomas George and Family Papers contain the papers of John Thomas and Florence Imogene George. The bulk of this material consists of financial records; including business correspondence, records of expense accounts, and ledgers. Correspondence includes letters to family members and business partners. School papers, newspaper clippings, and photographs are also included. The collection also includes the papers of Carolyn George North. This material includes topical files, church histories, writings, and materials relating to organizations North participated in, including records of church organizations and the Camp Moore Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Topical files relate mainly to George family genealogy and local history research. Page 4 of 10

SERIES DESCRIPTIONS Series I: Carolyn George North Subseries 1: Personal Papers Personal papers contain letters with family and friends, poetry collected and written by Carolyn George North, writings, and typescripts on topics relating to Tangipahoa Parish, the George family, and the Civil War. Subseries 2: Genealogy/Family History Genealogy and family history is comprised of correspondence, topical files, and one volume (1941-1950, 1957). The subseries includes newspaper clippings (1922-1975; undated) about George family genealogy and family activities in local and national organizations. Subseries 3: Organizations Organizations subseries consists of materials related to Carolyn George North s membership activities in the United Daughters of the Confederacy (1925-1971; undated). UDC materials consist of correspondence from Carolyn George North to UDC members, meeting reports and financial records for the Camp Moore Chapter. Carolyn North was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution Halimah Chapter based in Amite, Louisiana. The Halimah Chapter papers contain meeting agendas and a general history of the chapter. Included in this subseries are five account ledgers and one minute book for the United Daughters of the Confederacy kept by Carolyn George North. Series II: John Thomas George and Family Subseries 1: Family Papers Family papers consist of letters discussing George family genealogy and personal correspondence. Photographs included in this subseries are of Mouton Newsom, Sr., the George family General Merchandise store; four photographs of the Tangipahoa School; one picture each of the local Tangipahoa band and baseball team. Additionally, there are newspaper clippings about George family activities in local and national organizations and the Aileen Collins Civil War Scrapbook (1856-1865, 1895; undated). Subseries 2: Business/Financial Records This subseries includes correspondence from business associates, suppliers and customers that reflect daily business activity in the George General Merchandise Store. The manuscript volumes in this subseries are comprised of ledgers, personal accounts, and expense logs that detail purchase records, inventory, and store charges. The financial records contain bills from suppliers for goods, bills to customers, receipts for payment, statement of accounts, and invoices Page 5 of 10

Subseries 3: Organizations Collected in the organizations subseries are church and school papers. Church papers are comprised mainly of association minutes and brief histories of the New Zion Baptists Church (Tangipahoa Parish) and Tangipahoa Methodist Church. School papers reflect the early education of John Thomas and Florence George. Included are subject teaching aids and study guides, commencement pamphlets, an algebra notebook dated 1891, and Florence Taylor s Algebra notebook (1891). Page 6 of 10
