Wednesday, April 12, 2017 8pm Tenebrae Officiant, Richard Webb Readers, Andrew Federle and Karen Isaacs Director of Music, Daniel Webb The Office of Tenebrae The name Tenebrae derives from the immensely expressive symbolism of the service. It is the Latin word for darkness, and refers to the gradual extinguishing of candles and darkening the church. As the recitation of psalm and lesson, responsory and canticle proceeds, the candles are put out one by one, until a single candle is the only remaining light in the church. This one light represents Christ, the Light of the world, surrounded by the darkness that enveloped our Lord as he faced his Passion. This last candle is hidden for a time behind the altar, signifying the apparent victory of the powers of evil and death. A loud noise, representing the earthquake, accompanies the return of the candle, thereby showing that although our Lord appeared to be defeated by death, yet he came back victorious from the grave. The congregation should remain seated throughout the service, and is encouraged to sing the psalms with the choir where indicated.

Welcome Richard Webb First Nocturne Psalm 69, vv. 1-29 Cantor, then For the waters are come in, even unto my soul. I stick fast in the deep mire, where no ground is: I am come into deep waters, so that the floods run over me. I am weary of crying; my throat is dry: my sight faileth me for waiting so long upon my God. They that hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of my head: they that are mine enemies, and would destroy me guiltless, are mighty. I paid them the things that I never took: God thou knowest my foolishness, and my faults are not hid from thee. Let not them that trust in thee be ashamed for my cause, O Lord God of hosts: let not those that seek thee be confounded through me, O God of Israel. And why? for thy sake I have suffered reproach: shame hath covered my face. I am become a stranger unto my brethren: even an alien unto my mother's children. For the zeal of thine house hath even eaten me: and the reproaches of them that reproached thee are fallen upon me. I wept, and chastened myself with fasting: and that was turned to my reproach. I put on sackcloth also: and they jested upon me. They that sit in the gate talk about me: and the drunkards make songs upon me. But, Lord, I make my prayer unto thee: in an acceptable time. Hear me, O God, in the multitude of thy mercy; even in the truth of thy salvation. Take me out of the mire, that I sink not: O let me be delivered from them that hate me, and out of the deep waters. Let not the water-flood drown me, neither let the deep swallow me up: 2

and let not the pit shut her mouth upon me. Hear me, O Lord, for thy loving-kindness is comfortable: turn thee unto me according to the multitude of thy mercies. And hide not thy face from thy servant: for I am in trouble: O haste thee, and hear me. Draw nigh unto my soul, and save it: O deliver me, because of mine enemies. Thou knowest my reproach, my shame, and my dishonour: mine adversaries are in thy sight. Reproach hath broken my heart, and I am full of heaviness: I looked for some to have pity on me, but there was no man, neither found I any to comfort me. They gave me gall to eat: and when I was thirsty they gave me vinegar to drink. But as for me, when I am poor and in heaviness: thy help O God, shall lift me up. Psalm 70 Cantor, then The candles are extinguished as we enter the darkness of Holy Week. O God, make speed to save me: O Lord, make haste to help me. 3

Let them for their reward be soon brought to shame: that cry over me, "There, there." As for me, I am poor and in misery: haste thee unto me, O God. 4

Psalm 71, vv. 1-16 Cantor, then In thee, O Lord, have I put my trust; let me never be put to confusion. Deliver me and rescue me in thy righteousness: incline thine ear to me and save me. Be thou my stronghold, whereunto I may alway resort: thou hast promised to help me, for thou art my rock and my castle. Deliver me, O my God out of the hand of the ungodly: out of the hand of the unrighteous and cruel man. For thou, O Lord, art the thing that I long for: thou, Lord, art my trust, even from my youth. Through thee have I been holden up ever since I was born: thou art he that took me out of my mother's womb; my praise shall be always of thee. I am become as it were a wonder unto many: but my sure trust is in thee. O let my mouth be filled with thy praise: and with thy glory all the day long. Cast me not away in the time of age: forsake me not when my strength faileth me. For mine enemies speak concerning me: and they that watch for my soul take their counsel together, Saying, "God hath forsaken him: pursue him and take him, for there is none to deliver him." Go not far from me, O God: O my God, haste thee to help me. Let them be confounded and perish that are against my soul: let them be covered with shame and dishonour that seek to do me evil. As for me, I will patiently abide alway: and will praise thee more and more. My mouth shall tell of thy righteousness and of thy salvation all the day long: for I know no end thereof. I will go forth in the strength of the Lord God: and will make mention of thy righteousness only. 5

First Lesson Lamentations 1:1-2 How lonely sits the city that once was full of people! How like a widow she has become, she that was great among the nations! She that was a princess among the provinces has become a vassal. She weeps bitterly in the night, with tears on her cheeks; among all her lovers she has no one to comfort her; all her friends have dealt treacherously with her, they have become her enemies. Responsory Hymn 194 Civitas sancti tui Byrd Civitas sancti tui facta est deserta. Sion deserta facta est, Jerusalem desolata est. Your holy city has become a wilderness. Zion has become a wilderness, Jerusalem has been made desolate. Stay with us, O Lord Jesus Christ, night will soon fall. Then stay with us, O Lord Jesus Christ, light in our darkness. Stay with us, O Lord Jesus Christ, night will soon fall. Then stay with us, O Lord Jesus Christ, light in our darkness. (Sing four times) Second Lesson Lamentations 1:3-5 Judah has gone into exile with suffering and hard servitude; she lives now among the nations, and finds no resting place; her pursuers have all overtaken her in the midst of her distress. The roads to Zion mourn, for no one comes to the festivals; all her gates are desolate, her priests groan; her young girls grieve, and her lot is bitter. 6

O Saviour of the world Her foes have become the masters, her enemies prosper, because the Lord has made her suffer for the multitude of her transgressions; her children have gone away, captives before the foe. O Saviour of the world, who by thy Cross and precious Blood hast redeemed us, save us, and help us, we humbly beseech thee, O Lord. Third Lesson Lamentations 1:6-9 From daughter Zion has departed all her majesty. Her princes have become like stags that find no pasture; they fled without strength before the pursuer. Jerusalem remembers, in the days of her affliction and wandering, all the precious things that were hers in days of old. When her people fell into the hand of the foe, and there was no one to help her, the foe looked on mocking over her downfall. Jerusalem sinned grievously, so she has become a mockery; all who honored her despise her, for they have seen her nakedness; she herself groans, and turns her face away. Her uncleanness was in her skirts; she took no thought of her future; her downfall was appalling, with none to comfort her. O Lord, look at my affliction, for the enemy has triumphed! Ouseley 7

Caligaverunt oculi mei Caligaverunt oculi mei a fletu meo: quia elongatus est a me, qui consolabatur me: Videte, omnes populi, si est dolor similis sicut dolor meus. O vos omnes, qui transitis per viam, attendite, et videte si est dolor similis sicut dolor meus. My eyes are darkened by my tears: For he is far from me that comforted me: See, O all ye people, if there be any sorrow like unto my sorrow. O all ye that pass by, behold and see if there be any sorrow like unto my sorrow. Victoria Second Nocturne Psalm 75 Cantor, then Unto thee O God do we give thanks: yea, unto thee do we give thanks. : 8

When I reach the appointed time: I shall judge according unto right. : I said unto the fools, "Deal not so madly": and to the ungodly, "Set not up your horn." : For promotion cometh neither from the east, nor from the west: nor yet from the south. : 9

For in the hand of the Lord there is a cup, and the wine is red: it is full mixed, and he poureth out of the same. : But I will talk of the God of Jacob: and praise him for ever. 10

Psalm 76 Cantor, then In Judah is God known: his Name is great in Israel. At Salem is his tabernacle: and his dwelling in Sion. There brake he the arrows of the bow: the shield, the sword, and the battle. Glorious art thou, and more majestic: than the everlasting hills. The stout of heart are spoiled, they have slept their sleep: and the hands of all the men of might have failed. At thy rebuke, O God of Jacob: both the chariot and horse are fallen. Thou even thou art to be feared: and who may stand in thy sight when thou art angry? Thou didst cause thy judgment to be heard from heaven: the earth trembled and was still, When God arose to judgement: and to help all the meek upon earth. The wrath of man shall turn to thy praise: and the remainder of wrath shall honour thee. Promise unto the Lord your God, and keep it: let all that are round about him bring gifts, even unto him that ought to be feared. He shall cut off the spirit of princes: and is terrible unto the kings of the earth. 11

Psalm 77 Cantor, then I will cry unto God with my voice even unto God will I cry with my voice, and he shall hearken unto me. In the time of my trouble I sought the Lord in the night my hand was stretched out without ceasing; my soul refused comfort. When I think upon God, I am in heaviness when I meditate my spirit fainteth. Thou holdest mine eyelids from closing I am so troubled that I cannot speak. I have considered the days of old and called to mind the years that are long past. I commune with my heart in the night I meditate and search my spirit. Will the Lord cast us off for ever? and will he be no more entreated? Is his mercy clean gone for ever? and is his promise come utterly to an end for evermore? Hath God forgotten to be gracious? and hath he shut up his loving-kindness in displeasure? And I said, "It is mine own infirmity but I will remember the years of the right hand of the Most High." 12

I will remember the works of the Lord and call to mind thy wonders of old time. I will think also of all thy works and meditate upon thy doings. Thy way, O God, is holy: who is so great a God as our God? Thou art the God that doest wonders and didst declare thy power among the peoples. Thou didst mightily deliver thy people even the sons of Jacob and Joseph. The waters saw thee, O God, the waters saw thee and were afraid the depths also were troubled. The clouds poured out water, the skies thundered and thine arrows went abroad. The voice of thy thunder was in the whirlwind thy lightnings lit up the world; the earth was moved, and shook withal. Thy way was in the sea, and thy paths in the great waters and yet thy foot-steps were not known. Thou leadest thy people like sheep by the hand of Moses and Aaron. In the time of my tribulation, I stretched out my hands unto the Lord.

Blessed be the Lord God of Israel for he hath visited and redeemed his people. And hath raised up a mighty salvation for us in the house of his servant David. As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets which have been since the world began. That we should be saved from our enemies and from the hands of all that hate us; To perform the mercy promised to our forefathers and to remember his holy covenant; to perform the oath which he sware to our forefather Abraham: that he would grant us. That we being delivered out of the hands of our enemies might serve him without fear. In holiness and righteousness before him all the days of our life. And thou child shalt be called the Prophet of the Highest for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways. To give knowledge of salvation unto his people for the remission of their sins; through the tender mercy of our God whereby the day-spring from on high hath visited us; to give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death and to guide our feet into the way of peace. Officiant Christ for our sakes became obedient unto death; Even unto the death of the Cross. please kneel Collect Officiant O Lord, we ask you graciously to behold this your family for which our Lord Jesus Christ was steadfastly minded to be betrayed into the hands of the wicked, and to suffer death upon the cross; who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen. Please hand your taper back to the sidesteam. The congregation departs in silence. 14
