Vol. XXXII No. 1 Summer-Fall 2016 Newsletter Team: Rev. Yates Wilkinson Dr. Jack Darida Gary Thomas Printing by Williams Printing Company, Inc. Thanks for your continuing and faithful support! P. O. Box 1450 King, NC, 27021 Phone: 336-983-4357 E-mail: kingoutreach@triad.twcbc.com HOPE GIVERS By David White, KOM Board Chairman Wes Stafford wrote about a teacher assigned to work with a hospitalized school child on nouns and adverbs. Arriving at the hospital, she was taken to the Burn Unit. She had to scrub and put on sterile attire, and she found the school boy in profound pain. The teacher felt apprehensive, but she told the boy, I m the special teacher, and your teacher sent me to help you with your nouns and adverbs. The teacher went through the materials with him and then left, feeling that very little had been accomplished. The next morning, when the teacher arrived at the hospital, the Burn Unit nurses met her and said, Since you were here yesterday his whole attitude has changed. He is fighting back, responding to treatment It s as though he has decided to live. What had happened? The boy himself later explained, They wouldn t send a special teacher to work on nouns and adverbs with a dying boy, now would they? Sometimes, we impart hope to others by just showing up with compassion and doing what we can in the name of Christ. There is no doubt that compassion and caring is a gigantic part of the daily routine at King Outreach Ministry. When we do what we can, He will bless what we do and all that we do! Just send Mike an email at kingoutreach@triad.twcbc.com, and we will add you to the electronic distribution list. We do not share our email lists with any organization or person. Have You Ever Considered? In this issue of our newsletter, we include items that have been suggested to us as ways to increase giving to help our neighbors in need. These are some good ideas that have worked in other places to help agencies like KOM. For children or teen birthday parties suggesting no gifts for the young person but requesting canned food or personal care items be given which will be donated to KOM. Having Youth groups conduct food drives at local grocery stores to collect items for KOM. Giving In Honor Of or In Memory Of gifts and donations to KOM. We acknowledge these to the person being honored or to the families of the departed with cards stating who gave a gift. The amount of the gift is not disclosed in the acknowledgments to those honored or families of those remembered. Buying extra items to be used as donations to our food pantry whenever you go to the grocery store, WalMart or other stores. Issuing challenges within your circle of friends, work group. Sunday School classes, etc., to donate funds or goods to KOM once a quarter, twice a year, or even once a year. Using coupons to purchase personal care items for donation to KOM. Pic of Andyn Rights with food; use blurb from Stokes News For adults on their birthdays, anniversaries or even at Christmas, requesting food and personal care items donations be made to KOM in their honor in lieu of receiving gifts. Making designations in your estate planning to help KOM continue to help others, including gifts of money, stock or household goods. Sharing the KOM story with family and friends, business associates and fellow church members to spread the word about our efforts to help those in need. When using Amazon to make purchases, please use smile.amazon.com and designate KOM as the beneficiary, for holiday gifts use smile.amazon.com/ch/56-1409298 and we will get.05% of your purchase price as a donation! Thanks From KOM Please allow us to say thank you for making the annual peanut sales at the Stokes County Agricultural Fair, a fundraiser, a success. Monies from this project will help us buy food to feed the hungry in our area. We ordered 32 cases of peanuts and during the Fair there were 757 bags sold. This could not have been possible without the help of volunteer salespeople and our customer support. Again, we at King Outreach are grateful for your support!

Beyond These Walls Jerry Simpkins, Minister Jefferson Christian Church A few years ago I preached a sermon series at Jefferson called BEYOND THESE WALLS. I wanted to make Matthew 25:34-36 come alive and I also wanted to encourage the Lord's people to realize how important it is to reach beyond the walls of the local church. Matthew 25:34-36 says, Then the King will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed cloths and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.' The power of this passage is seen in verse 40,, I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me. When I read the stories of Jesus, I am always amazed by His compassion. The church has people that are filled with the same compassion and love that Jesus had, and that compassion motivates Christian people to move beyond the walls of the local congregation and into the community with love, compassion and service. Jefferson has moved beyond the walls of the church to supply the needs of foreign missionaries, by helping plant new congregations, by supplying the needs of people during national disasters, and by serving our own community. One of the many arms that Jefferson uses to reach beyond the walls is KOM. KOM is filled with people that show the same love and compassion of Jesus Christ. We must always remember Matthew 25:40,...whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me. Thank you KOM for being the hands, feet, and heart of Jesus in our community. Thanks for being filled with the same compassion and love that Jesus taught about. May God continue to richly bless KOM, Minister, Jerry Simpkins By Mike Culler, KOM Executive Director As I am composing my note this morning for our newsletter, I am pausing to say a very heartfelt thanks to God for the Shockley family: a lady, her husband and three (3) sons, in Michigan who gave a donation to KOM in memory of a friend s mother. Her friend is a King resident. This memorial was very special because they asked that we use their donation to purchase five (5) Thanksgiving meals for needy families in this area. What a beautiful and touching way to honor the memory of a lady they knew. The best part of this story, however, is that we are able to help ten (10) families with a complete Thanksgiving meal due to their generosity! We thank God for this family who is helping us help others! At this time of year, many of us will gather with family and friends to share meals, fellowship and friendship as we celebrate Thanksgiving and Christmas. It is a time we cherish and enjoy, even though it may prove hectic and stressful to fit everything in. As you participate is these activities, please thank God for His bounty, for family and friends, for food and all the wonderful blessings we enjoy. There are many without family and friends to share such times with, some because of life choices that have alienated others, some due to age and being in nursing homes, some due to hardships that have seen them lose many of the things they once held dear. It is these folks that we need to remember and include in our celebrations if at all possible. The Chestnut Grove Ruritans and Capella Church of Christ have partnered with KOM to offer an additional five (5) Thanksgiving meals each, allowing us to help ten (10) more families with a complete meal. First Christian Church Youth Group is putting together 35 Christmas meal baskets to help 35 families with a Christmas meal! So this year, we are going to be able to help 55 families with holiday meals due to the generosity and assistance of these groups. What wonderful blessings for us and for those we serve! Finally, may I send to each of you and your families our wishes and hopes from our 211 volunteers, Board members and staff that you will enjoy peace and prosperity, fellowship and love during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. May your celebrations be filled with wonder and joy, contentment and love, and may you share these gifts with those around you. And as you gather to feast, fellowship, laugh and share memories, may the time you spend together include a time of thankfulness to our Father and God who makes all these gifts possible. From all of us here at KOM to you and yours, Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas!

Help From The Business World On September 12, Johnny Cagigas, Vice President at Reynolds Tobaccoville plant, and his senior management team came to KOM to work as part of their giving back to the community. We thoroughly enjoyed having them work with our volunteers helping gather food orders and distribute them to our clients. This is the third year that we have had the pleasure of working with members of this group, and I know we all take something wonderful away from these interactions and working together. Many thanks to these wonderful folks! Recognizing Those Who Volunteer in their Senior Years We think it is appropriate to recognize two of our Senior volunteers, both whom have been with KOM since our beginning. The lady on the LEFT, Mrs. Mary Etta Gentry, celebrated her 101 st birthday in early October. She is here every Tuesday and works very well with everyone on her team. She is a dear, sweet, and mischievous lady! She works in our Clothing Room separating and sorting incoming donations. The lady on the RIGHT is Mrs. Margaret McClanahan Moore. At age 96, she is a Senior Olympian, swimming in meets and always bringing home several gold medals when she competes! Miss Margaret as she is known, works on Fridays as an interviewer.

SPECIAL NEEDS FROM KOM This has been a year with many, many families needing assistance. Already this year we have spent over $128,930.07 purchasing food to maintain our food pantry with adequate resources to fill food orders. Of this amount, $93,571.19 has been from our regular budgeted monies, but we have had to pull $35,358.88 from our Business Savings to cover the remainder of the cost of this food. We still have to get to the end of the year which means there will likely be another food purchase of approximately $10,000.00. This is in addition to the food donations received and food picked up at the Food Bank and the grocery stores. From August 1 through November 15, we have served 735 families (2,127 people) families (40% of our YTD total), feeding 663 of these families (1,976 people). Our point here is that demands have really begun to increase, but the resources to meet these needs has not kept pace, and our finances are being severely strained. Financial donations are not keeping up with demands for assistance, and our donations this year are down 10% for the same period as last year. Because of this, the KOM Board of Directors has made a painful decision to stop all assistance other than food and clothing for the foreseeable future. This will have a ripple effect with local churches who will be contacted by many of those normally seeking help from KOM for assistance. This is not something we want to do, but it is very much necessary for our financial stability. We would like to ask you to consider making an annual designated donation, in addition to what you normally give, to be applied to purchase home heating fuel for families. A price quote for 100 gallons of #2 fuel oil we just received is $202.72, and for 100 gallons of kerosene is $256.10. If you have watched any national news lately you have probably seen stories noting the prices of heating fuel will probably greatly increase over the heating season. In the past two heating seasons, November February 2014-15 and 2015-16, we spent $14,462.03 and $10,494.07 respectively. Heating fuel prices were very good last year and that was indeed a blessing! Many of the families we help with this kind assistance are elderly or have small children in the home. These designated donations would be placed in a separate pot of monies to be used only for heating assistance, much as we do for the BackPack Program monies. With the needs we have seen this year, we have expended $196,948.42 for assistance; including food, power bills ($42,899.46), and housing assistance which includes rent and temporary housing for families with no place to stay ($15,670.47). The economy has not improved and many families have seen tough times; many with few other resources to help them get through. Power bills have been higher than normal with a recent price increases and other bills for families also increased. We have seen families this year that have not had to ask for help in more than 10 years. While we hope for things to get much better, for the foreseeable future this does not appear likely. If you can help us at this time of year, we appreciate anything you can do. We are truly blessed to have your support throughout the year and thank you for all you have done to help us help others! King Outreach/Salvation Army Bell Ringing We ve all heard the song phrase, Christmas Is Coming, and with that is the sound of a tinkling bell at Salvation Army kettles. This year, King Outreach Ministry will again sponsor the Bell-Ringing on weekends (Thursdays-Sundays) at Lowe s Foods in the Five Forks Village Shopping Center. Six (6) local churches have volunteers signed up to help ring the bells on four (4) weekends starting at 5-9pm on Thursdays and Fridays, from 9 am 9 pm on Saturdays, and from 1 5 pm on Sundays. Money donated will provide for needs for Stokes County citizens. On these days as you grocery shop, please remember the sound of the tinkling bell is an invitation to provide a Christmas gift of love by dropping money into the red kettle. We certainly appreciate all the support we get in this effort!
