UNIT 22 Session 2 Use Week of: 2 The Unmerciful Servant BIBLE PASSAGE: Matthew 18:21-35 MAIN POINT: Jesus taught about God s forgiveness. KEY PASSAGE: Mark 6:34 BIG PICTURE QUESTION: Why did Jesus tell stories? Jesus told stories to teach people about God. SMALL GROUP OPENING (15 20 MINUTES) PAGE 22 LARGE GROUP BIBLE STUDY (10 15 MINUTES) PAGE 24 SMALL GROUP ACTIVITIES (20 25 MINUTES) PAGE 26 Leader BIBLE STUDY Jesus had been teaching His disciples when Peter asked Jesus, How many times should I forgive my brother when he sins against me? Peter suggested seven times. Jews considered it standard to show forgiveness three times (see Job 33:29-30), so Peter probably thought he was going above and beyond. Jesus answered Peter s question by telling a story about an unmerciful servant. In the parable, a servant owed his master ten thousand talents. A talent was equal to about 20 years of wages. Ten thousand talents represented a debt that could never be repaid. Faced with debtors prison, the servant begged for more time to repay the master. Instead, the master released 18 Preschool Leader Guide Unit 22 Session 2

his servant and forgave the great debt. The same servant went out and confronted a man who owed him a hundred denarii about 100 days of wages. The man begged for more time, but the servant refused and put the man in prison. When the master heard what happened, he was angry that the servant who had been forgiven a great debt did not show mercy to the man who owed a small debt. So the master put the man in prison until he could pay his debt. Jesus concluded the parable by explaining that God would react in the same way to anyone who does not forgive his brother. 2 We are like the servant, and God is like the master. Because of our sin, we owe a debt we cannot pay. We deserve to be punished for our sin, but God the Father showed His love by sending His Son, Jesus, to pay the debt we owe. Jesus lived the perfect life we fail to live and died the death we deserve to die. We come to Him with nothing to offer but empty hands of faith. Those who trust in Jesus are completely forgiven. As you teach preschoolers, emphasize that God shows mercy to us so that we will show mercy to others not just three times or seven times, but many times not keeping count. We have been forgiven a great debt, so we can forgive others when they sin against us. Additional resources for each session are available at gospelproject.com. The BIBLE STORY Bible Storytelling Tips Use puppets: Make paper puppets on craft sticks to use as you tell the Bible story. Create puppets to represent the king, the servant, and the man who owed the servant. You may also make puppets for Jesus and Peter. Use visuals: Use a bin full of silver coins and a short stack of silver coins to represent the two debts. Make sure one stack is much bigger than the other. Explain to preschoolers that you could not bring fifty million silver coins because you do not have that much money and it would be more than you could carry. The Unmerciful Servant Matthew 18:21-35 Peter had a question for Jesus. How many times should I forgive someone? Peter asked. Seven times? Jesus said, Not just seven times, but seventy times seven times! Then Jesus told Peter a story. He wanted Peter to know what forgiveness is like in God s kingdom. One day, a king called for his servants. How much money do you owe me? the king asked. One of the servants owed the king fifty million silver coins! The servant did not have fifty million silver coins, so the king said that the servant and his family would be sold instead. The servant begged the king, Please give me more time! I will pay you back what I owe; I promise! The king felt sorry for the servant, so he let the servant go and forgave his debt. The servant did not have to pay the king anything at all! Then the servant saw a man who owed him one hundred silver coins. He grabbed the man and said, Give me my money! The man begged the servant, Please give me more time! I will pay you back what I owe; I promise! But the servant did not forgive the man. He threw the man into jail. Some other servants told the king what happened. The king called for the servant he had forgiven. You are an evil man! the king said. You owed me more money than you could ever repay, and I forgave you; but that man owed you a little bit of money and you did not forgive him. 20 Preschool Leader Guide Unit 22 Session 2

The king was angry. He punished the servant and made him pay back all the money he owed. After Jesus told the story, He said, This is what My Father in heaven will do if you do not forgive each other. Christ Connection: Because of our sin, we owe God more than we could ever repay. We deserve to be punished. But Jesus came and died on the cross for our sin. He was punished instead of us. He paid what we owe God. When we trust in Jesus, God forgives our sin all of it! We can forgive others because God has forgiven us so much. WANT TO DISCOVER GOD S WORD? GET MORE! Invite preschoolers to check out this week s devotionals to discover that God gives us mercy so that we will show mercy to others. KEY PASSAGE: Mark 6:34 BIG PICTURE QUESTION: Why did Jesus tell stories? Jesus told stories to teach people about God. Kingdom Kid song offering basket Allergy Alert download favorite toys related to the Bible story theme More or Less activity page, 1 per child pencils or crayons LOW PREP Welcome time Play the unit theme song in the background as you greet preschoolers and follow your church s security procedures. Set an offering basket near the door to collect at an appropriate time. Post an allergy alert, if necessary. Set out a few favorite theme-related toys, such as puzzles and blocks. Activity page Guide preschoolers to circle the stack with the most coins in each row. Help preschoolers count coins as needed. SAY In today s Bible story, Jesus told a story about a servant who owed a king fifty million silver coins! Another man owed the servant one hundred silver coins. Fifty million is much more than one hundred. Listen to our Bible story to discover what happened to the servant. Perform actions seven times Call out an action and lead preschoolers in completing that action seven times. Possible actions include: jumping, squatting, touching your toes, jumping jacks, patting your head, lifting arms above your head, and so forth. Count to seven out loud as preschoolers perform each action. 22 Preschool Leader Guide Unit 22 Session 2

SAY Good job doing those actions seven times! In today s Bible story, Peter asked Jesus how many times he should forgive someone. He thought seven was a good number, but Jesus said something different. Guess how many Gather a large number of three different items in three separate jars. Suggested items include pom-poms, crayons, markers, buttons, beans, and so forth. Count the items ahead of time so you will know how many are in each jar. Show preschoolers the jars and invite them to guess how many items are in each jar. Then guide a preschooler to open a jar and begin counting. Provide small bins so preschoolers may separate the items into sets of 10. Challenge older preschoolers to count higher. The idea is to have so many of the items that preschoolers grow weary of counting. Stop the activity when you sense frustration has set in and reveal which preschoolers guessed closest to the actual number of items in the jars. SAY Counting that high was really hard and tiresome! In today s Bible story, Jesus told Peter about something we should do many, many times even more than [number from jar 1], [number from jar 2], or [number from jar 3] times. Listen to our Bible story to find out what Jesus said to do again and again. Transition to Bible study To gain the attention of all the preschoolers to move them to Bible study, show the countdown video, flip off the lights, or clap a simple rhythm for the children to copy. Invite preschoolers to count their steps as they move to Bible study. large clear plastic jars, 3 jar items, many small bins countdown video (optional) Jesus the Storyteller 23

Invite a preschooler to open it. Reverently display the open Bible. SAY The Bible is God s words to us. The Bible tells us what God is like and what He has done for us, and all of it is true! Today s Bible story comes from Matthew. Show the video or tell the Bible story using the provided storytelling tips. Use the bolded version of the Bible story for young preschoolers. Talk about the Bible story SAY When we do not forgive other people when they hurt us, we are like the servant in the story Jesus told. Jesus taught about God s forgiveness. We are sinners, and we sin more times than we can count. 24 Preschool Leader Guide Unit 22 Session 2

But God forgives all our sin when we trust in Jesus. We can forgive others when they hurt us because God has forgiven us so much. Point to the Bible story picture on the giant timeline or big story circle as you ask the following review questions: 1. How much money did the king forgive the servant? (fifty million silver coins) 2. How much money did the other man owe the servant? (one hundred silver coins) 3. What did the servant do to the man who owed him? (threw him in jail) 4. What did the king do when he heard how the servant treated the other man? (punished the servant and made him pay back what he owed) Learn the big picture question SAY Our big picture question asks, Why did Jesus tell stories? Jesus told stories to teach people about God. SAY Jesus taught about God s forgiveness by telling a story. The king in the story was angry because his servant did not forgive the man who owed him a little money after the king had forgiven the servant for owing him a lot of money. When we do not forgive people, we are like that servant. God forgives our sin when we trust in Jesus all of it! How can we not forgive others? Stack coins Set out an assortment of real or plastic coins. Invite preschoolers to stack the coins. Challenge a preschooler to see how high of a stack she can make. Create several stacks near each other and compare the sizes. Count the number of coins in each stack. SAY In the story Jesus told, the servant owed the king way more silver coins than the man owed the servant. The king forgave the servant s debt, but the servant 26 Preschool Leader Guide Unit 22 Session 2

did not forgive the other man. Jesus taught about God s forgiveness. Because of our sin, we owe God more than we could ever repay. But Jesus paid what we owe God. When we trust in Jesus, God forgives our sin all of it! We can forgive others because God has forgiven us so much. Stamp seventy times seven Print a Stamp Grid for each preschooler. Challenge a preschooler to fill all the boxes in the grid with a stamp. If preschoolers finish, hold up seven stamped pages to show them what seventy times seven looks like. SAY Jesus taught about God s forgiveness. Jesus said we should forgive seventy times seven times. That s a lot! Jesus is right to tell us to forgive. Because of our sin, we owe God more than we could ever repay. Jesus died on the cross to pay what we owe God. Jesus forgives us way more than seventy times seven times. Forgiving other people again and again is a way to show Jesus that we love Him and are thankful for His forgiveness. Play with cash registers Set out toy cash registers and play money. Snack Play the countdown video to signal the end of activities. Guide preschoolers to clean their areas. Take a restroom break and wash hands. Gather preschoolers for snack time. Thank God for the snack. Serve each child seven crackers for snack. Remind preschoolers that Peter thought seven times was a good number of times to forgive others, but Jesus said, Not just seven times, but seventy times seven times! Jesus taught about God s forgiveness. He wanted Peter to know what forgiveness is like in God s kingdom. We can forgive others because God has forgiven us so much. Transition When a child finishes her snack, guide her to throw away any trash. She may select a book or puzzle to examine, play quietly with play dough or a favorite toy, or color the Bible story coloring page. Offer the journal page and invite preschoolers to draw a zero on their page. Explain that zero is a number that means nothing. Jesus paid what we owe God by dying on the cross and coming back to life. Our debt is zero. When we trust in Jesus, God forgives our sin all of it! Pray for the children. SAY God, because of our sin, we owe You more than we could ever repay. We deserve to be punished. But Jesus was punished instead of us. Help us to put our trust in Jesus and to forgive others because we have been forgiven. Amen.
