The OLIN T. Binkley Memorial Baptist Church August 24, 2014 11:00 am BECOMING AWARE "If the world is sane, then Jesus is mad as a hatter and the Last Supper is the Mad Tea Party. The world says, Mind your own business, and Jesus says, There is no such thing as your own business. The world says, Follow the wisest course and be a success, and Jesus says, Follow me and be crucified. The world says, Drive carefully the life you save may be your own and Jesus says, Whoever would save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. The world says, Law and order, and Jesus says, Love. The world says, Get and Jesus says, Give. In terms of the world's sanity, Jesus is crazy as a coot, and anybody who thinks he can follow him without being a little crazy too is laboring less under a cross than under a delusion." - Frederick Buechner, Listening to Your Life Welcome to Binkley! Binkley Baptist Church is a community of faith on a journey that calls for questioning, humility and conviction. As followers of Jesus, we embrace spiritual growth, mutual care and service, assured that as we serve our neighbors, we joyfully serve God. Intentionally inclusive, we welcome people of all races, sexual orientations, and cultures, respecting diverse religious experiences within the church and beyond. We invite others to join us in our commitment to peace, justice, and care for creation. In a spirit of Christian love, we welcome you. Visitors, please fill out a visitor card and place it in the offering plate. Hearing assistance devices and children s worship bags are available in the Narthex before service begins. People: And so the names multiply Immanuel, Counselor, Bright Morning Star, Lord of Lords, Shepherd, Gate, Bread of Life, Maker, Defender, Redeemer, Friend. Leader: But, you persist to question us through the haze of our many answers. People: You look at us with your care-worn eyes, and you ask us, each one. Who do YOU say that I am? Leader: We may retreat to the safety of silence, letting the question linger. We might turn to the rabbis and debate the meaning of the question, without ever answering the question itself. People: You are the Messiah, the Son of the Living God. This is Peter s answer, naming and claiming Jesus boldly. Leader: The Psalmist declares that the Lord is on our side. The scripture says that we are befriended by the Way, the Truth, and the Life. People: May our worship today echo these blessings, and may we meet the eyes of Jesus when we are asked, Who do you say that I am? *OPENING HYMN O Worship the King 17 LYONS *INVOCATION Dale Osborne WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS *SHARING THE PEACE OF CHRIST

We, O God, Unite Our Voices Tune: Hyfrodol; Lyrics by Grady Nutt (Chancel Choir sings verse 1, congregation joins on verses 2 and 3) We, O God, unite our voices Raised in thankful praise to thee Thou, unchanging, safe has brought us Through the ever-changing sea Days of calm and days of conflict Nights of darkness prove thy grace Hands beneath us, arms around us And above thy smiling face Seeing then the task before us Bind our hands and hearts as one May our labor be in union Our resolve and thine be one With one spirit let us labor Toward the bright horizon far In the midst of deepest peril Be thy light our guiding star God, our choice, the wind's direction Unforeseen the calm or gale Thy great ocean swells before us And our ship seems small and frail Fierce and flinging is thy mystery Calling us to shores unknown Plunge us on with hope and courage Till thy harbor is our home BINKLEY PRAYER CONCERNS & JOYS CHURCH FAMILY Bill Bodkin Gove Elder Shirley & Willard Hamrick Ginny Lansing Mike Berkut Priscilla Bratcher Jo Flair Martha Henderson Pam Swanson-Boyd Connie Gates Claudia Cannady Billie Cox Jayne Howard Edith Wiggins Allen Davidson HEALTH CENTER RESIDENTS AND THOSE IN THE HOSPITAL Jean Breckenridge Joan Ewing Leo & Rusty Wagoner Ernie Roberts Marj Boltz Barbara Brown (daughter-in-law Gladess Crisp) Tan & Scott Coats (Thailand missionaries) John Gray (friend of Anne Huffman) Andrew Henley (son of Carl Henley) Kirk Lanier (friend of Linda Textoris) EXTENDED FAMILY Ann Overton David Houser (son of Lynn Houser) Margery Lightsey (mother of Gloria Lightsey-Lewis) Bill & Hilda Moffitt John Varner (brother of Ginger Clifford) Suzie Michaels Donald & Gail Smith (Nan Pardington s Uncle & Aunt) Celia Pierce (sister of Joe Pardington) Friend of Aneisa Blair We offer condolences and prayers to John and Ann Overton upon the death of John's mother Margaret Overton on August 19 at Carolina Meadows and to Ken and Peg Williams following the death of their brother-in-law, Bob Smith on August 18.
