Lent is a season of forty days, not counting Sundays, which begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Saturday. Lent comes from the Anglo Saxon word lencten, which means "spring." The forty days represents the time Jesus spent in the wilderness, enduring the temptation of Satan and preparing to begin his ministry. Lent is a time of repentance, fasting and preparation for the coming of Easter. It is a time of self-examination and reflection. In the early church, Lent was a time to prepare new converts for baptism. Today, Christians focus on their relationship with God, often choosing to give up something or to volunteer and give of themselves for others. Sundays in Lent are not counted in the forty days because each Sunday represents a "mini-easter" and the reverent spirit of Lent is tempered with joyful anticipation of the Resurrection. http:// www.umc.org/what-we-believe/what-is-lent-and-why-does-it-last-forty-days Lent and Kids - Lent, just as much as Advent, is a time of waiting and preparing. Kids can learn about and come to appreciate this important season of the Christian year, but you have to be creative. How can you mark the days of Lent in your home and/or classroom? While there are many ways to make it happen, here are some things that have proven to be quite effective over the years. - See more at: http://www.ctcumc.org/lentforkidsfocusingongodstime#sthash.ihlvy3wc.dpuf Fasting and Lent - Fasting has been a part of Methodism from our early beginnings. John Wesley considered fasting to be an important part of a Christian's life and he personally fasted weekly. To Wesley, fasting was an important way to express sorrow for sin and penitence for overindulgence in eating and drinking. He believed it allowed more time for prayer and was more meaningful if combined with giving to the poor. - See more at: http://www.ctcumc.org/whatdoesthemethodistchurchsayaboutfastingatlent Resources for Lent: Devotional, Family & Worship - http://www.ctcumc.org/ devotionalfamilyworshipresources Suggestion: Rather than giving up something for Lent, give something by giving yourself. Week One: Letter Writing - During the week, write a letter of appreciation to at least one person each day. It can be to someone you have appreciated for a while, or someone who has helped you in the past. The message can be encouragement, gladness, or even reconciliation. Week Two: Visitation - Make a personal visit each day to a homebound person, an inactive person, a prospective member or simply someone whom you would like to know better. Week Three: Phone Calls - Your gift of love this week is a telephone call each day to someone you haven t been in touch with for some time. It could be to say I miss you, I m sorry, or I m thinking of you. Let them know you care. Week Four: Love Gifts - Take or send a gift each day to someone. The gift could be something as simple as flowers, a plate of cookies, or a book. Week Five: Prayer - Choose a person or two to pray for each day, by name. Or, it could be for someone in the news, or when you hear a siren. It could be for 1st responders, our military, or our nation. They all need our prayers. Week Six: Forgiveness - If anything stands between you and someone else, remember what Jesus said on the cross: Father, forgive them. (Luke 23:24) Or each day, make a commitment to God to love someone and show it.
