Is The World Taking Note That You Have Been With Jesus

DEDUCTIVE LESSON FOUR Choose This Day Whom You Will Serve Faced with a dilemma most of us have yet to face, Peter and John chose to obey God rather than man. We need to look no further than the recent Supreme Court decision, that allowed the owners of Hobby Lobby to obey their conscience rather than the regulations of Obamacare, to realize that this very problem may come knocking on our door. I watched as the media, and members of the government, misrepresented the facts to make the owners (avowed followers of Jesus) look oppressive and bigoted. As the media, society, and even our government become increasingly hostile, we may all eventually need to make a public and likely unpopular stand for Christ. Fortunately, if that occurs we won t be without resources. Jesus, speaking to His disciples, promised, But when they arrest you and deliver you up, do not worry beforehand, or premeditate what you will speak. But whatever is given you in that hour, speak that; for it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit Mark 13:11 (NKJV). As I prepared the introduction to this study, I received the following via e-mail from a friend. It was simply entitled The Sneeze, and it described a true story that happened at Eastern Shore District High School in Musquodoboit Harbour, Nova Scotia. They walked in tandem, each of the ninety-two students filing into the already crowded auditorium. With their rich maroon gowns flowing and the traditional caps, they looked almost as grown up as they felt. Dads swallowed hard behind broad smiles, and Moms freely brushed away tears. This class would not pray during the commencements, not by choice, but because of a recent court ruling prohibiting it. The principal and several students were careful to stay within the guidelines allowed by the ruling. They gave inspirational and challenging speeches, but no one mentioned divine guidance and no one asked for blessings on the graduates or their families. The speeches were nice, but they were routine until the final speech received a standing ovation. A solitary student walked proudly to the microphone. He stood still and silent for just a moment, and then, it happened. All 92 students, every single one of them, suddenly sneezed! The student on stage simply looked at the audience and said, God bless you, and he walked off the stage. The audience exploded into applause. This graduating class had found a unique way to invoke God's blessing on their future with or without the court's approval. It is interesting to note, that much like the case of Hobby Lobby, those assailing the Christians in the first century also ignored the facts, and focused on their agenda rather than the truth. The pivotal point in both of Peter s sermons that had resulted in the conversion of 5,000 people, was the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. It was less than two months after His death, and if Peter s claim of Jesus resurrection was false, all the authorities had to do was go 1

to His tomb and produce the body but they couldn t do it because He had risen, and Peter s claims were true. Memory Verse Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated and untrained men, they marveled. And they realized that they had been with Jesus. Acts 4:13 (NKJV) Prayer Start by praying over the passage and asking the Holy Spirit to give you fresh insights and wisdom in understanding it. Then read through the entire passage two or three times. Day 1 Peter and John Arrested Acts 4:1 4 The healing had occurred in the Court of the Gentiles, which was the same location Jesus had overturned the moneychangers tables. It brought a response very similar to what Jesus encountered in John 2:14 16. For the church, hostility to the gospel had just started with no end in sight, as in the next 23 chapters of Acts, only three of them do not involve some level of persecution of the church. 1. What were the authorities most concerned about in Peter s proclamation? 2. The Sadducees were very wealthy and politically well-connected with the Roman authorities. Why would the resurrection of Jesus be especially offensive to the Sadducees (see Matthew 22:23)? 3. What was another reason that the Sadducees were opposed to Jesus (see John 11:48)? 4. Today we see many modern-day Sadducees, even within the church. They are those who will tolerate the teachings of Jesus as long as we don t mention the two Rs (repentance and the resurrection). How were these two elements central to the gospel of the early church (hint: read Peter s speeches in Acts 2 and 3)? 2

5. We see the start of the persecution of the church, yet despite this, the church continued to grow to over 5,000 individuals. This was likely an actual number of just men, not including all of the women and children. When we face opposition, like Peter and John, how does Romans 8:31 39 encourage us? 6. Should we be surprised when we encounter resistance to the gospel and persecution (2 Timothy 3:12 and John 15:20)? Day 2 Addressing the Sanhedrin Acts 4:5 12 Peter, with the filling of the Holy Spirit, had undergone a major transformation. Prior to the gift of the Holy Spirit, he would rather deny Jesus than face the accusations of a servant girl. Now he won t back down when confronted with the entire Sanhedrin. The Sanhedrin was composed of the 71 best-educated, wealthy, and powerful men in the nation of Israel. 1. What names do you recognize from the life of Jesus and what do you know about them (John 18:12 14)? 2. What critical detail does Luke mention concerning Peter as he addresses the Sanhedrin that might account for his courage? How can we tap into that resource? 3. Identify three or four elements or points that Peter makes as he addressed the Sanhedrin that he also made in his sermons in Acts chapters 2 and 3. 4. Peter, in his explanation to the Sanhedrin, alludes to Psalm 118:22, a passage which was also cited by Jesus in Matthew 21:42. How does this scripture apply to Jesus? 3

5. Like the movie All Dogs Go to Heaven, many would say that all roads lead to heaven if you are sincere in your faith (doctrines called inclusionism or pluralism). How does verse 12 contradict this belief? Day 3 The Sanhedrin s Judgment and Apostle s Response Acts 4:13 22 The original Greek truly shows the contempt that the highly educated and wealthy Sanhedrin had for these followers of Jesus from Galilee, ( hicks from the sticks by some accounts). They called them uneducated (Agrammiaitos) and untrained (Idioties, from which we get idiot). 1. What was the source of wisdom for Peter and John? 2. Albert Einstein once said, If the facts don t fit the theory, change the facts. Faced with the indisputable fact of a miracle, rather than embrace Jesus as Savior, what plan does the Sanhedrin come up with? 3. How does Peter respond to the Sanhedrin s call to cease and desist? 4. How might we apply Peter s response in our lives? 5. What additional fact do we learn about the miraculous healing in this passage? 4

Day 4 Prayer for Boldness Acts 4:23 31 The companions could be the other apostles, the 120 mentioned in Acts 1, or the entire church community. Note the unity of the believers. While it is possible that all prayed in unison, it is more likely that Peter s prayer received a series of hearty amens from the community of believers. 1. It has been said focus is crucial. Vertical focus on God yields a big God and a small problem. Conversely, a horizontal focus on the problem yields a small God and a big problem. How does the believer s prayer reflect proper orientation? 2. How was Christ a fulfillment of Psalm 2:1 2, which was quoted here? 3. Who killed Jesus? Some would say the Jews while others the Romans. Based upon verses 27 28 what would you answer? 4. Often when we are faced with difficulties, we ask God to remove the trial. In light of the order from the Jewish ruling body to no longer preach the gospel, what significantly do the believers ask for, and not ask for, in their prayer as recorded in this passage? 5. What do you feel is the purpose of the signs and wonders mentioned in verse 31? 6. The shaking of the building was a sign of God s presence in their midst. What additional sign did they receive that confirmed they were in the middle of God s will? 5

Day 5 Early Church Community Acts 4:32 36 1. A hallmark of the early church was the unity within the body. What evidence can you find that shows that koinonia? 2. This passage is not an endorsement for a form of Christian communism, as many still maintained ownership of their own property (see Acts 12:12). Any sharing of resources was entirely voluntary. What general principles can you extract from the practices of the early church that would be applicable today? Day 6 Take Away / Summary If one of your friends at work or a neighbor were to ask you what you did on Tuesday, you would tell them you went to a Bible study. The next question would likely be, What did you learn? We often summarize an entire athletic contest or a movie in a few brief sentences and easily convey the essence of the event. Now apply these same skills to give a summary of the passage in a sentence or two. Then, in an additional sentence or two, describe what impact this passage will have on how you live. Memory Verse Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated and untrained men, they marveled. And they realized that they had been with Jesus. Acts 4:13 (NKJV) Key Words/Phrases 6

Write out the definition of these key words. You can use a regular dictionary or go to one of the Greek sources listed in the Tool Box at the end of the study. You may also use a concordance to see where else and how the word is used in the Bible. How would these phrases instruct or encourage us today?
