A Letter from Father... Page 2 November 4, 2012 VOTE NOVEMBER 6, 2012 The Bishops of California Support Proposition 34! Summary: Proposition 34 would: Replace the death penalty as the maximum punishment for persons found guilty of murder with life imprisonment without possibility of parole. Apply retroactively to persons already sentenced to death. Create a $100 million fund to be distributed to law enforcement agencies. YES on Prop 34 Death Penalty Talking Points 1. When Cain killed Abel and was exiled, he wasn t killed. In fact, the Lord put a mark on Cain, lest anyone should kill him at sight. Genesis 4. 2. When Jesus was asked about the death penalty for the woman caught in adultery, he simply said, Let the man among you who has no sin be the first to cast a stone at her. John 8 3. In 1980 the Roman Catholic Bishops of the United States called for ending the use of the death penalty in our country. 4. Since 1973, there have been 140 inmates released from death row because they have been proven to be innocent. Three were in California. 5. The California death penalty system costs taxpayers $185 million per year beyond the costs of keeping convicts locked up for life. 6. In 2005 the Roman Catholic Bishops of the United States re-affirmed their 1980 commitment and began the Catholic Campaign to End the Use of the Death Penalty. 7. Over 100 current and former criminal justice professionals have signed the Prop 34 law enforcement letter opposing the death penalty. 8. Over 700 victim family members belong to California Crime Victims for Alternatives to the Death Penalty and support Prop 34. 9. On the death certificate of someone executed in California, the reason for death is recorded as homicide. 10. A Dade County, Florida, study showed that the murder rate went up after an execution, proving that it is not a deterrent to murder. 11. An execution creates another set of victims - the family of the person executed. 12. Studies have shown that executions have a detrimental effect on prison staff. 13. The death penalty is simply revenge. FROM THE CALIFORNIA CATHOLIC CONFERENCE

All parishioners are welcome to place any pictures of deceased loved ones on the table under the scroll. Please remember to pick up your photographs. Attention All SFDS Teens!! TOP PRIORITIES Jesus had shown such freedom in his attitude to Jewish law that some people felt threatened, believing he was trying to overturn it. Instead, Jesus was bringing people back to a fresh observance of the Law, and showing that God was fulfilling in him what the Law only pointed toward. The scribe who questions Jesus seems genuinely to want his opinion and listens carefully. He replies enthusiastically to Jesus that he too believes that loving God and neighbor are at the heart of everything. The exchange is likely to have been more than words; the unspoken understanding and sense of acceptance between Jesus and the scribe silenced the onlookers. When words of scripture jump into sharp focus, it can have a overwhelming effect on our lives. We hear something deeply personal, written hundreds of years ago, but spoken as if for us here and now. Living Stewardship Now Spend some time reading the scriptures before going to Mass. Look in your parish bulletin to see upcoming readings or access them online at the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops Web site: usccb.org/nab/ Copyright (c) 2011, World Library Publications. All rights reserved. Let us not hesitate to help those who have died and offer our prayers for them. St. John Chrystostom KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS NEWS The Knights of Columbus invite families and friends to join them at their pancake breakfast this morning (November 4th), benefiting Notre Dame High School s Girls Basketball Team. All are invited to assist the Knights of Columbus at this special liturgy.
