In this month, we are graced with the birth dates of Imam Hussain (as), Hazrat Abbas (as), Imam Sajjad (as), and Imam Mehdi (ajtf). Momineen are reminded that the fasts at the beginning, middle, and end of this month are highly recommended. Imam Ali (as) has said, "As for anyone who observes fasting in Sha'ban, Almighty Allah will draw him near to His honour on the Resurrection Day, and decide Paradise for him incumbently." The Hussainia has arranged programs on the significant dates of this month. Please check the Hussainia website and your email for details. In addition, the Hussainia has opened its doors for any victims of the Fort McMurray wildfire, and will be collecting donations that will be passed on to the Canadian Red Cross. May Allah (swt) hasten the reappearance of Imam-e-Zamana (as), include all of us in his companions, and protect us from the influence of Shaytan. D u t i e s & r e s p o n s i b i l i t i e s d u r i n g o c c u l t a t i o n It is clear now as to how important it is to await for the reappearance of Imam az-zaman (a.t.f.s.) and how great is the status and position of those who await. Also, it is a reality that as the level increases, responsibilities and duties increase too. Although there are a number of responsibilities of a believer during the major occultation, we shall mention a few important ones hereunder, keeping brevity into consideration. a) Recognition of Imam Mahdi (a.t.f.s.) By recognition, historical knowledge and information is not what is implied. Rather, it means to be aware of those levels, perfection and authority that has been granted to Imam az-zaman (a.t.f.s.) by Allah the Almighty. If we believe in these, then we will be sure that he is definitely keeping a watch on all our actions, every single one of them. He rules on each and every particle of this world. The entire universe is subject to his command. Only then will we refrain from sins and seek refuge and help from him for all our difficulties. b) Improvement in deeds We cannot see Imam az-zaman (a.t.f.s.) with our sinful eyes but he, definitely, is observing us. If somebody really believes that he is constantly being watched by Imam az-zaman (a.t.f.s.), he will keep away from quite a few sins. Good deeds are the only way to gain proximity and nearness to Imam az-zaman (a.t.f.s.). And who does not desire to be nearer to his Imam (a.s.)? He (a.t.f.s.) himself has admonished us, "Then each one of you should act in such a way that your deeds bring you closer to our love, and refrain from all those actions that will bring you nearer to our wrath and anger." c) Reformation of the Society To rectify and improve our society, i.e. our children, brothers, sisters, relatives, friends, acquaintances, etc. is also our responsibility. For, it is essential that the ground be prepared for the reappearance. I m am Hasan al- Askari (a.s.) says, "An orphan is he who loses his father. But greater than him is he who has become distanced from his Imam and does not have access to him. He is n o t aw are o f his responsibilities and obligations. Among our Shias, one who is knowledgeable of our traditions and knowledge, should teach this Shia who is ignorant and unaware, and guide him. It is as if he has sheltered and nourished an orphan. Yes, the one who guides him and teaches him our religious laws, will be with us in the highest grades of paradise." d) Supplication (Dua) Supplication is a weapon of the believer through which he repels calamities and encounters difficulties. He attains his desires with its help. The reappearance of Imam az-zaman (a.t.f.s.) and his being safe from all evils and calamities is the heartfelt desire of every believer. One of the rights that he (a.s.) enjoys upon us is that we should pray for him, first and foremost, in our supplications and invocations. Naturally, we always pray for that thing first which enjoys utmost significance in our eyes. Nobody is greater than Imam az-zaman (a.t.f.s.) nor is anything more important than his reappearance. It is necessary that after every Salat (prayer), our first supplication be in favor of Imam az-zaman (a.t.f.s.). We must begin and end our day with the prayers for the reappearance of our beloved Imam (a.s.). Although there are a number of invocations for Imam-e-Zamana (a.t.f.s.) like Dua al-nudbah, which should be recited on Fridays, etc. we shall suffice here with only two important supplications for him. (a) In every Salat (prayer), especially in obligatory prayers, we should recite the following invocation in the Qunoot. This is also called as Dua al-salaamati. ا لل ه م ك ن ل و ل ي ك ال ح ج ة ب ن ال ح س ن ص ل وات ك ع ل ي ه و ع لى آبائ ه في هذ ه الس اع ة و في ك ل ساع ة ول ي ا و حاف ظا و قائ دا و ناص را و د ليال و ع ي نا ح ت ى ت س ك ن ه ا ر ض ك ط و عا و ت م ت ع ه فيها ط ويال b) After Salat (prayer) al-subh (morning prayers), we must recite the brief Dua al-ahd. It is a salutation, a covenant and a supplication, all put together. The Holy Prophet (a.s.) says, "Whenever you get entangled in some difficulty, then seek refuge in the presence of Hazrat Hujjat (a.t.f.s.) and invoke him. He will save you and grant you salvation. He answers the needy. He is the refuge of anybody who seeks refuge in him." Page 2

B i r t h A n n i v e r s a r y o f I m a m S a j j a d ( A ) On the 5th of Sha ban we are celebrating the blessed birth anniversary of the Survivor of the heartrending tragedy of Karbala. He is none other than Imam the son and successor of Imam Husain (A.S). Named Ali at birth in honour of his grandfather, the Commander of the Faithful, Imam Ali ibn Abi Taleb (A.S), this virtuous grandson of the Immaculate Lady, Hazrat Fatema Zahra (S.A), became famous as Zain al-abedin or Ornament of the Worshippers of God. Born in Medina in the year 38 AH, his mother was the pious Iranian princess, Shahrbano, and he was destined to be the 4th Infallible Heir of his great-grandfather Prophet Mohammad (S.A.W.A). In 61 AH, at the age of 23, Imam Zain al-abedin (A.S) was entrusted with the divine trust of imamate on the afternoon of the tragic Day of Ashura in Karbala, and immediately found himself the captive of the Godless forces of the tyrant Yazid. He was taken in chains to Kufa and thence to Damascus, along with the womenfolk and children of the Prophet s noble household. In such a grave situation, he never allowed the dignified image of the imamate to be tarnished. Despite seeing his aunts and sisters in fetters, along with the heads of his father, brothers, uncles, and cousins, mounted on lances, he exercised the utmost patience in carrying the message of Imam Husain (A) to the enemy s camp. In the court of the tyrant Yazid, he unmasked hypocrisy and exposed the oppressive Omayyad regime as usurpers of the caliphate. His famous sermon, in which he called the pulpit no more than planks of wood for having lost its Islamic use, had an electrifying impact on Yazid s court. And when Azaan or the call of the prayer was recited, he asked Yazid, as to whose grandfather was Prophet Mohammad (S.A.W.A) and how Yazid could call himself a Muslim after brutally killing the Prophet s grandson. On release from captivity, he returned to Medina along with his noble aunt, Hazrat Zainab (S.A), who had also shaken the Omayyad court to its very foundations by her eloquent sermons, and then her holding of the life-inspiring mourning ceremonies for the Martyrs of Karbala. For the next ten years, Imam Zain al-abedin (A) lived a quiet life in Medina under circumstances when Abdullah ibn Zubayr had seized power in the Hijaz as the caliph and was terrorizing the Prophet s family members. The 4th Imam, nonetheless, continued his enlightening task through his impeccable manners and the power of prayers to enlighten minds and souls. His supplications during this period and the subsequent period of another twenty years when the Omayyad regime reasserted its questionable authority over Arabia and other lands, and this time under Abdul-Malik Marwan and his accursed sons, were the means of guidance for the seekers of truth. In this way he rebuilt the fabric of Islamic society and conveyed to the Muslims the genuine teachings of Prophet Mohammad (S.A.W.A). For instance, he stressed that without firm faith in the fundamentals of Islam, including the principle of Wilaya or Imamate, which means divinely-designated leadership, a Muslim would be in perpetual loss. He clarified that the first questions to be posed in the grave to a freshly buried person by the two angels known as Munkir are monotheism, creed, Prophet hood, and imamate. The one who rightly answers these questions attains salvation, and the one who doesn t, is doomed. This was part of the unique method of Imam Zain al- Abedin (A.S) to emphasize on the five fundamental principles of religion, that is, monotheism, divine justice, prophethood, imamate and resurrection. In other words, without the concept of imamate, the faith of a Muslim is incomplete and open to serious doubt. In this way, he conveyed to the Ummah in a subtle manner that the rule of the Omayyads and others was illegal, because God had entrusted the leadership after the Prophet, to the Ahl al -Bayt, as is evident by the famous Hadith Saqalayn of the Prophet as well as the Prophet s proclamation of Imam Ali (A.S) as his vicegerent on the Day of Ghadeer. A close scrutiny of the supplications and statements of Imam Zain al-abedin reveals how he taught the correct faith by negating the rule of tyrants, especially the Omayyads, who were in power during his days. Here are passages from the famous Salawaat of Sha ban as taught by the 4th Imam and where the prime position of the Prophet and the Ahl al-bayt as the chosen of God is evident: O Allah blesses Mohammad and the progeny of Mohammad with a plenteous blessing that would make them pleased; and do justice to the right of Mohammad and the progeny of Mohammad, with your power and might, O Lord of all the worlds! ( A ) Page 3

B i r t h A n n i v e r s a r y o f I m a m S a j j a d ( A ) O Allah, bless Mohammad and the progeny of Mohammad, the good and the pious, the chosen ones, whose right You have made mandatory to observe, enjoining obedience to them and acknowledgement of their guardianship! O Allah, bless Mohammad and the progeny of Mohammad and make my heart thrive with obedience to you. Do not put me to humiliation by being guilty of disobedience to you. Enable me to do kindness to those whose provision You have tightened through the plenty You have provided me with Your grace, and what You have apprised me of Your justice, and made me flourish in Your shade! This is the month of Your Prophet, the Chief of Your Messengers Sha ban, which You have enveloped in Your mercy and Your approval, the month wherein it was the practice of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and his progeny, to observe, until his death, its fast and to perform devotions during its nights and days, in order to do it honor and reverence out of humility before You! O Allah, so help us in following his example with regard to it and to win his intercession! As is clear from the wordings, the devotion to the Prophet s progeny is compulsory for every Muslim, the lack of which is blatant disobedience of the commandments of the All-Merciful Lord. Most of these eloquently moving supplications have been collected in book form as Sahifat as-sajjadiyya, and today are recited fervently by the faithful all over the globe, while there is no trace of the tombs of the Omayyads and the Zubayrids. B i r t h o f i m a m h u s s a i n ( A ) Six months after Al-Hasan (as) was born, Fatima az-zahra (sa) became pregnant with her second child. Lady Fatima az-zahra (sa) started noticing the signs that childbearing was near; but, the Prophet (S) had already foretold of Imam Husayn's (as) birth. Imam Sadiq (as) said: "Once, Umm Ayman's neighbors came to the Prophet and said: "Messenger of Allah, Um Ayman did not sleep last night because of crying; she surely cried until morning. " The Prophet (S) summoned her and said: "Umm Ayman, your neighbors say that you spent the night crying, may Allah not cause your eyes to cry!! What made you cry?" She (Umm Ayman) answered: "Messenger of Allah, I had a fearful dream which caused me to cry all night long." The Prophet (S) said: "Tell me your dream, for surely Allah and His Messenger are most knowledgeable. She said: "Last night I saw a dream as if one of your limbs was thrown in my house!!" The Messenger of Allah (S) said: "Your eyes have slept, but you visioned a good thing. Umm Ayman, Fatima will give birth to Al-Husayn, and you will bring him to me. So, one of my limbs will be in your house." When Al-Husayn (as) was born, Umm Ayman brought him to the Prophet (S) who said: "Both the carrier and he who is being carried are welcome. Umm Ayman, this is the interpretation of your dream." Umm al-fadhl, Al-Abbas's wife, had a similar dream. Safia Bint Abdul Muttalib, Asma Bint Umais, and Umm Salama were present when Imam Husayn (as) was born. When the Prophet (S) asked Safia (his aunt) to bring him the newborn child, she said: "We have not cleaned him yet." When the Prophet (S) heard this, he said: "You clean him?! Surely Allah the Exalted has cleaned and purified him." After Al-Husayn (as) was born, Gabriel again descended to the Prophet (S), and revealed to him to give the new baby the name Al -Husayn (as). Al-Husayn (as) is the Arabic version of the old Hebrew name Shabbir, which was Haroun's second son's name. When Gabriel descended to the Prophet, scores of angels accompanied him to congratulate and console the Prophet (S) for Husayn's (as) birth, and expected martyrdom. Imam Husayn (as) was not nursed by any woman, including his mother (Fatima az-zahra) (as); instead he suckled the Prophet's tongue until he grew old enough to eat. Because of this, his characteristics were exactly as those of the Prophet (S). Seven days after the birth the, Messenger of Allah (S) shaved Husayn's (as) head and gave the weight of his hair as charity for him. ( A ) ( A ) Page 4

. H a z r a t A b b a s (a) (a) Imam Sadiq (A.S.) said: "Our uncle Abbas the son of Ali had a penetrating insight and a firm faith." (A'yan al- Shia, vol. 7, p. 430) Those familiar with the tragedy of Karbala have to an extent recognized the role, status, sacrifice, and courage of Abbas ibn Ali (A.S.), also referred to as Ab al-fadl. However, is it possible to fully grasp and understand his status? Amidst the preparations of war, Abbas ibn Ali (A.S.) and his brothers were offered a letter from Ubaydullah, commander in chief of Yazids army, insuring their safety. Abbas ibn Ali (A.S.) firmly replied: We are in no need of your protection. The safety Allah has provided us with is better than that of the son of Sumayyah's". He then turned towards Shimr, who was carrying the letter, and said: "May Allah curse you and the letter you have brought. Are you offering us safety while the son of the Messenger of Allah is not safe?" With those words he sent them back into their own army. Or is it possible to recognize his magnificence and status at the time when Imam Hussain (A.S.) bid farewell to those who were willing to give up before the battle? I have given permission for all of you to leave. You are free (to go), said Imam Hussain (A.S.). Leave and you no longer need to remain true to your allegiance with me. It was Ab al-fadl al- Abbas (A.S.) who broke the silence and said: "Why should we do such an act? To live after you, never! May Allah (SWT) forbid such a day!" What degree of faith lies within him, which causes him to recite epic verses while his right hand has been cut off by the army of Yazid? In a situation all else would fail to handle, Abbas (A.S.) said the following: "By Allah (SWT), if you cut my right hand, I will never stand back, and I will protect my religion; and I will support the Imam who stands firm in his belief, and is the grandson of the pure and truthful Prophet." Ab al-fadl al-abbas (A.S.) is that same person whom when Imam Hussain (A.S.) hurried to his martyred body, made a statement that he had never before: a statement, which is another proof for the status of Abbas (A.S.). In losing his brother, Imam Hussain (A.S.) said: "(and) now my back has broken!" Imam Sajjad (A.S.) has said about his uncle: "May Allah bless Abbas the son of Ali, who dedicated (his life), was examined by calamity, and lost his life for his brother to the extent that his two hands were cut off. Verily Abbas has a status in the presence of Allah that all the martyrs will envy on the Day of Judgment" In the Ziyarat of Nahiya, Imam Mahdi (A.S.) addresses him as the following:"peace be upon Ab al-fadl al-abbas, son of the commander of the believers, the one who protected his brother with his own life, and collected provisions from his past for his future. It is he who sacrificed himself for his brother, made his own life a shield, and made sufficient effort for his sake" Thus, we too would like to say: "Infinite peace and blessings be upon you and your righteous and enlightening behavior, O Ab al-fadl! Peace be upon you as you reached your high status and courageously accomplished the path you faced. Peace be upon you as you are among the greatest, most shining, and most sacrificial martyrs in the presence of Allah (SWT)."
